When you hear the word fats, chances are that you think of something bad. However, not all fats are particularly bad. There are many fats that are actually quite good for you and necessary in maintaining your overall health. It is important to choose unsaturated fats and to limit the amount of fat that you are eating because most fats contain a lot of calories.
Fish is a good source of omega 3 fatty acids. Salmon, albacore tuna, sardines, mackerel, herring, and lake trout are all good choices of fish to add to your diet. Omega 3 fatty acids may help to reduce the risk of abnormal heartbeats and can also decrease the chances of a blood clot forming.
Canola oil and olive oil can be used instead of butter as both of these types of oils provide a good source of healthy fats. Simply replacing lard, butter, and bacon grease with olive oil can help to improve cholesterol levels.
