4. Fever
If the traveler’s diarrhea is caused by a virus or infection, it may be accompanied by a fever. A fever is a sign that there is something in your body that shouldn’t be. When you have a fever, your body is trying to reset and remove the invading virus or bacteria.
Fevers and diarrhea together can quickly cause dehydration, so it’s important to drink plenty of fluids if you are suffering from both symptoms. If your fever lasts for more than a couple of days or if it becomes too high, you should seek medical treatment.
While a virus may need to run its course, an infection may require medications like antibiotics to treat it. If left untreated, diarrhea and fever may continue, and the infection may lead to further complications. Over the counter, fever medication may temporarily lower a fever, but it will not treat the underlying cause of the symptom.
