5. Flax Seeds
Largely studied for its potent Omega-3 fatty acids which promote communication between brain cells as well as fight inflammation and aid digestion, flax seeds (and flax seed oil) have recently come to light as a natural cholesterol-lowering remedy too. A 2010 study from Nutrition Research revealed a correlation between daily administration of 100mg of flaxseed lignan (the active polyphenol compounds in flaxseeds) and a reduction in overall blood cholesterol levels in moderately hypercholesterolemic men. Flaxseed oil can be purchased as a fluid to drink or cook with, or a gel cap supplement, and should be taken daily for the greatest health benefits.
