16 Natural Methods to Prevent Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is one of the leading causes of vision loss with more than 10 million people in the United States affected by the illness. Cataracts and glaucoma our second, but the two combined do not equal the amount of people with vision problems due to macular degeneration. Macular degeneration is not curable, but there are some things that you can do to prevent it from happening. Before we get to those, you should understand how the disease works.

Macular degeneration is caused by the deterioration of the center part of the retina which is the back layer of the eye the records everything we see and send them to the brain. When the retina starts to deteriorate, your vision also starts to deteriorate, and people that have macular degeneration can tell because they experience vision loss right in the center of the field of vision. Let’s look at some ways to prevent macular degeneration.

1. Vitamin A/Beta Carotine

The first thing that you should do is add vitamin A in beta-carotene to your diet. Both of these are extremely important when it comes to maintaining eye health in humans. They each work a little bit differently, but there both really good additions to whatever other nutrition plan or healthy eating you are doing to prevent disease. Beta-carotene assists with macular functioning and nourishes the photoreceptors in the eye. It also helps to prevent oxidation of the lens.

Vitamin A or beta-carotene into your diet, but the simplest way is simply by eating a lot of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables contain vitamin A in huge supply. If you do not get enough vitamin A and beta-carotene from your daily servings of fruits and vegetables, then you should consider adding a multivitamin to your diet. However you do it, this is one of the most important ways that you can prevent macular degeneration from happening in the first place.
