Search Articles Here

When the mouth becomes sore and inflamed, it is referred to generally as stomatitis. When the mouth is sore it can cause a person to have difficulty eating, talking, and even sleeping. Stomatitis may occur anywhere in or around the mouth. This includes the gums, inside of the cheeks, on the tongue, on the palate, and anywhere around the lips. There are several types of stomatitis that a person may have. The most common type of stomatitis is a canker sore. Cold sores and simple mouth irritations are common as well. A number of things can cause stomatitis. The mouth is the first place digestion occurs, so irritation in the mouth can cause other health issues as well. It can also be a sign of an underlying health condition. Additionally, a lot of bacteria and other unwanted items can enter through the mouth causing stomatitis. Here are 15 common causes of stomatitis.

1. Injury

If you are hit in the mouth or have any type of injury to the mouth it can cause stomatitis. Some people might develop a canker sore after an injury to the mouth or face. It is important to make sure that you are protecting your mouth as much as possible. If you play sports, wearing a mouthguard can help to protect your teeth and gums if you happen to take a ball to the face. Avoiding injury to the face is one of the best ways to avoid stomatitis. If an area of your mouth becomes inflamed or irritated, it can be difficult to eat or even talk. If your injury causes swelling in your face it is a good idea to see your doctor. Icing the area can help reduce the swelling and also ease some of the pain that you might be feeling.
