There are several types of stomatitis that a person may have. The most common type of stomatitis is a canker sore. Cold sores and simple mouth irritations are common as well. A number of things can cause stomatitis. The mouth is the first place digestion occurs, so irritation in the mouth can cause other health issues as well. It can also be a sign of an underlying health condition. Additionally, a lot of bacteria and other unwanted items can enter through the mouth causing stomatitis. Here are 15 common causes of stomatitis.

1. Injury

If you are hit in the mouth or have any type of injury to the mouth it can cause stomatitis. Some people might develop a canker sore after an injury to the mouth or face. If you play sports, wearing a mouthguard can help to protect your teeth and gums if you happen to take a ball to the face. Avoiding injury to the face is one of the best ways to avoid stomatitis.
