3. Pain Medications
Depending on how severe your peritonsillar abscess is, your doctor may prescribe pain medications to help ease some of the pain that you are experiencing. If you are provided with prescription pain medication it is important to make sure that you take it exactly as it is prescribed. You will be provided with instructions on how to take it by your pharmacists.
You should only take this type of medication as it is needed for pain. If your doctor does not prescribe pain medication, ask them if it is okay to take over the counter medications to help ease some of the pain. Acetaminophen and ibuprofen can be helpful with the pain. Naproxen can also help to alleviate inflammation and ease the pain caused by a peritonsillar abscess. Make sure that you do not mix different types of pain medication as this can cause more harm than good.
