When it comes to treating tonsillitis, there are a few different routes that you can take. Tonsillitis is an infection of the tonsils; which are two oval-shaped fleshy bits that are part of the throat. Tonsils were often removed in the past because they were not thought to have value, but sciences since learned that they are instrumental in keeping out the infection from those areas, so many doctors often go with other treatment options.
One of those treatment options happens to be antibiotics, but the problem is that tonsillitis can be caused by either a bacterial infection or a virus. Antibiotics are only going to work against bacterial infection, and antivirals are usually intended for a specific kind of virus. The good news is, your body is pretty much equipped to handle treating tonsillitis on its own, but you have to give it a boost sometimes. That’s where these natural remedies come in.
1. Avoiding Respiratory Irritants
One of the things that you can do is a natural remedy for tonsillitis is to avoid respiratory irritants altogether. For example, if you are around someone that smokes regularly indoors, then you may want to restrict their smoking to a certain room of the house or outside while you have tonsillitis.
Irritants like these can make your illness worse and make it last longer. Of course, cigarette smoke is not the only type of respiratory irritant that you can avoid to get over having tonsillitis faster. You may want to avoid allergens that normally cause swelling or make you sneeze because these can irritate the throat as well. You may also want to avoid using parts of town where you know there is heavy pollution because that can be an irritant on your throat as well and cause it to hurt for hours afterward.
