2. Hyperthyroidism
When the thyroid becomes overactive it is referred to as hyperthyroidism. The thyroid gland is responsible for releasing hormones known as T3 and T4. These hormones are needed in order to regulate metabolism and protein synthesis. They also help to keep levels of energy up.
Some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism include heat intolerance, increased heart rate, weight loss, and frequent bowel movements. Hyperthyroidism can also cause the body to use up energy faster than it normally would. This can cause a person to feel hungry quite often, resulting in the person developing polyphagia.
Treatment for hyperthyroidism can be difficult, but is often done using radioactive iodine. This treatment may cause a person to develop hypothyroidism, which is the opposite of hyperthyroidism and requires medication to help regulate the production of hormones from the thyroid. If you are experiencing intense hunger, having your thyroid tested by a medical professional is recommended.
