4. Frequent Urination
Bacterial or viral urethritis infection may also present symptoms of urinary dysfunction. The patient may notice an urge to urinate frequently and feel like their bladder is not empty after urinating. These urinary symptoms occur due to inflammation of the urethra by bacteria, and its spread to the bladder.
Unfortunately, there is no medication or treatment available to stop these symptoms, and the patient will have to wait for the infection to clear before they regain control of their urinary function.
In severe cases, the patient may need the assistance of a catheter to drain the bladder and prevent them from leaking urine onto their clothing, the floor, or other areas like the couch at home.
As a result, the patient may experience issues with incontinence, where they leak urine after or before peeing. Doctors treat these symptoms by attempting to address the cause of the infection – namely the bacteria responsible for developing the symptoms of urethritis.
