4. BRATT & Hydration
The most important way to battle a traveler’s diarrhea is to stay properly hydrated. When you have loose stools, a lot of water and electrolytes are lost. Drinking plain water can cause more diarrhea and further imbalance the system. Make an easy rehydration solution comprised of the fourth cup of bottled orange juice and two cups of bottled water kept at room temperature. Mix in two teaspoons of sterilized honey and a quarter teaspoon of baking soda as well. This will help replace the lost sugar, salt, potassium, and water from your system.
Traveler’s diarrhea also makes your body lose alkaline fluid, which the baking soda will replace. For food, the best way to soothe the stomach and fight traveler’s diarrhea is with the BRATT diet. This simple fare is Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast, and Tea- BRATT. Not only are these foods high in nutrients, but they will also help you add bulk to your stools and regain your energy.
