4. Ectopic Contractions
One of the main characteristics and symptoms of bigeminy are the changes in the way the heartbeats. These ectopic contractions can originate from the top part of the heart or the bottom part of the heart. In most people who suffer from bigeminy, ectopic contractions will develop in both areas and alternate every so often during the course of a beat pattern. Ectopic contraction is extremely common in adults of all ages, even those who are not suffering from bigeminy.
In children, Ectopic contractions are not often seen unless it is a rare case where a congenital heart defect has occurred. Various factors cause ectopic contractions to develops such as stress, poor eating habits, pregnancy, or even excessive use of nicotine.
