5. Suicide
On the more severe end of the spectrum, suicide can also be a symptom of fear of long words. Phobias, in general, can increase the odds of someone committing suicide at some point throughout the course of their life. This is due to the fact that they have a severe and irrational fear of something that’s probably harmless.
Those with arachnophobia or claustrophobia aren’t at a very high risk of suicide due to the fact that small spaces and spiders are both relatively rare. In contrast, those with a fear of long words are in constant fear since a long word could be anywhere in the world. The days, months, and even years of being in fear can take a toll on the mental health of the patient and lead to them committing suicide as a result. While suicide is a more extreme symptom of fear of long words, it does happen.
