4. Hot and Cold Remedies
Hot and cold remedies are widely used to relieve IC symptoms and at times, probably the best therapy to quell IC flare-ups. Depending on the type of flare-up cold, known as cryotherapy, may be more helpful or heat, known as thermotherapy, may be more advantageous, or a combination of the two.
When pain erupts from the bladder wall, a hot water bottle or heating pad will help to decrease the throbbing and spasm of the muscles. Cold, in the form of an ice pack or frozen liquid gel, can be used to desensitize the pelvic floor. A piece of cloth should be placed between the skin and the cold or hot apparatus to prevent skin damage. For clarification:
- Cold therapy decreases inflammation by reducing blood flow.
- Heat therapy is better for chronic pain and helps to relax muscles.
Be sure to rotate between the two temperatures every 20 minutes or so to prevent skin damage.
