4.Peritoneal dialysis
Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a treatment that utilizes dialysate (cleaning solution) and the lining of the abdomen to clean the blood when the kidneys are no longer functioning properly. During the procedure, a tube called a catheter is inserted into a part of the abdomen. The lining of the abdomen called the peritoneum acts as the filter for blood and also allows for waste products to be collected and discarded.
Having peritoneal fluid in the stomach can raise the pressure in the abdomen. Moreover, the extra fluid that is present has a possibility of leaking out. This can lead to painful swelling near the groin. The insertion site used for the catheter can cause parts of the bowel to be pushed out, thereby, resulting in the formation of a hernia.
