11. Muscle Building
You may have noticed that nitric oxide is also used as a bodybuilding/athletic supplement. The reason for this is several fold. Firstly, nitric oxide can increase blood supply to the muscles, which in turn means more energy, more pump and general better performance in the gym.
Subsequently, this greater blood supply will be useful for recovery. As the muscles recover and grow, they will need a supply of nutrients and increased blood flow will help with this.
Finally though, nitric oxide has also recently been shown to increase the number of satellite cells surrounding the muscles. Satellite cells are what the body uses in order to restore and rebuild muscle tissue – these are recombined into the muscle fibers that make up muscle mass.
So when you use nitric oxide you now have a greater supply of blood and nutrients, as well as more cells to help build that muscle mass!
