Hidradenitis suppurativa Describe the skin condition causing painful small lumps that form under the surface of the skin. These lumps create symptoms of irritation, causing affected individuals trouble with managing pain symptoms. The lumps may also break open and weep, causing further irritation and pain symptoms in the patient.

On some occasions, the lumps create tunnels under the skin, causing red or black discoloration that’s necrotic in appearance. This condition typically affects areas of the skin where rubbing occurs. Common areas include the groin, between the buttocks, under the armpits, and the breasts.

Most cases of hidradenitis suppurativa occur after the patient starts puberty. The condition persists for years in some cases and gets worse over time. People who are suffering from this condition notice a significant reduction in their quality of life. Patients can benefit from surgery and medications to help manage their symptoms and prevent any complications that may occur as a result of the condition.

1. Changes in the Skin

One of the first symptoms to manifest in affected individuals are changes in their skin. The patient may start and notice that the skin around the affected area turns pink or reddish in appearance. The skin may also start to feel bumpy and start to present symptoms of irritation and pain that are mild in the beginning.

As the condition progresses, the patient notices the discoloration around the skin turns from reddish-pink to purple, or black in some cases. This discoloration does not fade over time and gets steadily worse over the coming weeks and months.

The bumps associated with the condition typically start to form in the skin, as the patient reaches puberty. In many cases, the patient may feel embarrassment with the development of the condition, causing them to delay treatment. In some cases, the patient may refuse to remove clothing, causing them to abstain from activities such as sports or gym class while at school.

2. Irritation and Sensitivity

The skin is the largest organ in the human body, and while it is reasonably resilient to infection and disease, conditions like hidradenitis suppurativa cause dramatic changes that are unsightly, painful and may persist for lengthy periods. One of the first symptoms to show up is mild sensitivity, especially when the patient starts to sweat on a hot day. Symptoms increase as their clothing starts to rub against the affected area.

The sensitivity starts to cause symptoms of irritation that leave the patient’s skin feeling sore from contact. In most cases, the use of anti-inflammatories and painkillers can somewhat subdue irritation and sensitively felt by the patient. However, the effect of the medications is short-lived, and when they wear off, the patient will notice the return of the symptoms.

The irritation and sensitivity vary in individuals affected by the condition. They start as a mild sensation and then progress to a severe problem as the condition starts to spread. In some cases, patients experience symptoms in multiple areas at once.

3. Blackheads

Many teenagers experience the onset of acne as they enter puberty. One of the most common forms of acne is the development of blackheads. Blackheads occur when the pores in the skin start to experience a blockage. As a result, the skin accumulates dirt in the pores, leading to the formation of a blackhead.

People who are dealing with the effects of hidradenitis suppurativa start to notice these blackheads occurring in the small pitted areas of the skin, causing the development of the bumps associated with the condition. In most cases, blackheads appear in pairs giving a double-barreled appearance. Blackheads stop the skin from secreting natural oils causing blockages that may further exacerbate the presence of bumps.

Most teens that experience the onset of blackheads use specialist face washes. These products remove the blackheads and restore the pause to their normal levels of oil secretion. However, patients suffering from hidradenitis suppurativa experience no relief from using these types of skin products, and the condition continues to spread.

4. Lumps

Patients who are dealing with the effects of hidradenitis suppurativa notice a single, small, painful lump appear on the underside of the skin. In most cases, the condition starts with the formation of a single lump, that grows in size over weeks or months. After noticing the first bump, the patient will often experience the onset of multiple lumps that are pea-sized in appearance.

The lumps typically occur in areas where hair follicles form, causing a blockage in his pores. The condition is particularly painful for girls and young women, as many of them will shave their armpits, exacerbating effects of the condition. As a result, many girls and women decide to refrain from shaving their armpits, as the irritation symptoms increase after shaving.

The bumps steadily gain and size over a few weeks or months, causing changes in the skin color that make the skin look irritated and inflamed. Some patients may confuse the bumps with shaving rash or ingrown hair.

5. Tunneling

The development of tunneling symptoms is one of the more severe symptoms of hidradenitis suppurativa. Over months, the bumps underneath the skin may start to connect. This effect results in the formation of a tunnel. These tunnels often turn dark red or black in appearance, giving the impression of skin necrosis.

If left untreated and unmanaged, these tunnels start to crack and leak pus. The cracks in the tunnels may also present a bad odor, and the patient may start to notice a crust around the edges, causing further symptoms of irritation. In most cases, these tunnels take an extensive amount of time to heal, with some tunnels persisting for months.

The tunneling effect of hidradenitis suppurativa is incredibly painful, and patients may experience sharp pains and severe irritation whenever the folds in the skin rub against one another. The addition of odor coming from the tunnels is also embarrassing, especially for young women in their teenage years. Unfortunately, these individuals cannot use any form of deodorant on the affected area as it may exacerbate the symptoms of pain.

6. No Sign of Recovery

Most skin conditions will heal after a few days, weeks, or months. However, patients who are dealing with a case of hidradenitis suppurativa notice that the condition continues to progress as time passes. In many cases, the patient may start to develop malaise, as they start to grow uncertain if the condition will ever start to heal.

Dealing with the effects of the bumps caused by the condition is frustrating. However, seeing the conditions spread throughout the affected area, with no signs of healing, can cause severe levels of concern in the affected individual. Many patients do not visit the doctor for a diagnosis in the first stages of the condition, as the bumps, irritation, and redness in the skin are not an immediate cause for and concern.

However, as the changes in skin color occur and tunneling starts, the patient may start to feel uneasy about their situation. After receiving a diagnosis, the patient often experiences a lifting of the malaise symptoms, as they come to terms with the cause of the condition.

7. Reoccurrence

Patients who are dealing with a case of hidradenitis suppurativa will often seek treatment after the lumps show no sign of receding. Some patients may wait for a couple of weeks before they decide to visit their doctor, and very few ever reach the tunneling stage of the condition without seeking medical attention.

Doctors treat the symptoms of hidradenitis suppurativa using medications and topical creams to curb the symptoms and stop the irritation. In most cases, the patient makes a slow and steady recovery. However, some patients may take longer to heal than others, and some patients also risk the reappearance of the lumps after the skin heals.

In cases of reoccurring hidradenitis suppurativa, patients may start to feel very frustrated with their condition, and it may take a toll on their mental health as well as their self-image. However, reoccurrence is rare, and most patients make a full recovery with no lasting impact on their health.

8. Complications

Patients who are dealing with an outbreak of hidradenitis suppurativa are at risk of an infection, especially during the tunneling stage of the condition. Patients that reach the tunneling stage also at risk of developing scars and permanent changes in the skin. In some cases, the wounds from the tunneling may heal, but they may leave rope-like scarring or pits in the skin.

The skin irritation may also limit or restrict movement in the affected individual. The sores and tunnels associated with hidradenitis suppurativa are tremendously painful, and many patients choose to live a sedentary lifestyle to avoid rubbing the skin in the affected area.

Some patients may also experience obstruction with lymph drainage. The most common areas in the body for lymph nodes are under the arms and in the groin area. Unfortunately, these are the most common site for the development of this skin disorder as well. As a result of the inflammation associated with the condition, the patient may start to notice pain and swelling in the lymph nodes.

The unsightly sores and tunnels also cause the patient to become self-conscious of their physical appearance. As a result, the patient may limit their participation in sports and other physical activities.
