Schistosomiasis is a very rare disease that is rarely seen in the United States. When it does occur, there are less than 20,000 cases in a year. Schistosomiasis is a disease that occurs when there is an infection because parasitic worms are in the freshwater, especially in certain subtropical and tropical countries.

The water becomes infected when animals urinate or add feces. The reason people get it is because when they happen to swim or place any parts of their bodies in the water it gets into the bloodstream. Schistosomiasis is easy to get into the skin. It can affect the organs, such as the liver, intestines, and urinary bladder.

Some of the symptoms that will occur with this disease include coughing, rash, and itchy skin. There are medications that will clear the disease. It clears up fairly quickly, such as one to two days. There are eight frequent causes of Schistosomiasis.

1. Parasitic worms in freshwater is a frequent cause of Schistosomiasis.

The freshwater is contaminated, so when a person swims or have any contact in the water, they will get the disease. When the disease is in the body, it may cause a rash and itching of the skin. The parasitic worms have gotten in the bloodstream, which can affect the organs.

It is important to get medical treatment as soon as possible because it can get serious, especially since your organs will become affected. The infection usually occurs in tropical and subtropical countries, such as the Middle East and Africa. When traveling to these countries, you have to be careful when using the water. Their water isn’t clean and if it’s best to use the water at a clean hotel. The water at the hotel will be fresher. It is not a good idea to swim in it as well.

""

2. Urination of animals is another cause of Schistosomiasis.

Subtropical and tropical countries have a number of animals that use their freshwater to drink and bathe. They use the water to urinate in it as well. That is one of the main reasons why the water becomes contaminated. People tend to like to swim and bathe in it to clean themselves off from a long day.

People even drink the water. It should be a sign to not get in the water at all since it’ll be a different color. Once the infection gets into the skin, it travels to the bloodstream and will make you ill. Besides getting medication to clear the disease, you’ll need to take a thorough shower in soap and hot water. The clothes that you were wearing need to be washed in hot water as well. You don’t want to carry the disease back to the United States.

""

3. Feces in the freshwater is a frequent cause of Schistosomiasis.

Animals and humans in the subtropical and tropical countries tend to use the water as a means to make a bowel movement. They even drink the water because some of the people live in poor conditions. Subtropical and tropical countries have diseases, especially in the poorest regions of the country. Feces carry bacteria, which becomes a problem for a healthy person who uses the water.

There should be a warning to people to not get into the water because it’ll have a foul odor to it. Some parents who take their children to these countries allow their children to play in the water. Even getting their feet wet can contaminate them.

Any part of their bodies that the water touches will get into their bloodstream and harm them. It can make a child sicker than an adult because their immune systems are weaker.

""

4. Infected people who swim, drink, and bathe in the freshwater is a cause of Schistosomiasis.

In the poorest parts of the tropical and subtropical countries, the people have to use the water because they are unable to get clean water. They become infected and may not know they have the disease. If they do know they have the disease, they’re unable to afford the medicine to clear it.

When a healthy person gets into the water, they’ll easily become infected because infected people have been in the water numerous times. It doesn’t matter if you wear protective clothing, the contaminated water will get onto your face.

When swimming, the water will get into your mouth. That is one of the easiest ways to get the bacterial infection. In a few days, you’re start feeling ill and won’t know what had caused it. By not going to the doctor fast, the infection will get worse.

""

5. Schistosoma eggs cause an infection in the freshwater is another cause

It becomes contaminated once the eggs and infected people urinate and make bowel movements in the water. The eggs will hatch and the more people who use the water, it remains contaminated. Animals make bowel movements in the freshwater and carry diseases.

The water becomes dirty and contaminated that when they drink or swim in it, the infection gets into their skin and bloodstream. They continue to use the water and remain infected. More eggs will develop in the water and get into freshwater snails.

If the disease isn’t treated, it can cause health problems, such as high blood pressure or lead to death. This is a disease that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Some people don’t even know they have the disease. If they do know they have it, they won’t take it seriously and let it stay in their bodies.

""

6. Snails in the water can cause Schistosomiasis.

The Schistosoma eggs hatch into the snails and the parasite develop and grow continuously in the snail. In the poorest parts of the subtropical and tropical regions, the people eat snails because they have no other means of food. It doesn’t matter if they cook the snails, the parasite is still in the snail.

Americans who travel to their countries allow their children to play in the water and collect snails. They don’t any gloves on when they pick the snails up. Children have a tendency to put the snail close to their face also. In a few days, the child will get sick and begin to have a number of symptoms, such as coughing or rash on the skin.

Parents need to find a good doctor in the country and get their child examined. The doctor will ask them if they have been in the freshwater and explain to them how contaminated it is.

""

7. Swimming in the water is another cause of Schistosomiasis

People enjoy swimming in the water to cool off, especially since tropical and subtropical regions are hot. The infected people continue to swim in the freshwater. When healthy individuals swim in it, their immune system weakens and the disease attacks the body. The water gets into the mouth as well because the water is deep and it’s even worse when you dive into the water.

In order to get the disease out of your body and skin a thorough shower in hot water, along with prescription medicine. The infection will clear in a few days. It would be a good idea to not get back into the water.

A doctor who doesn’t explain to the patient the way he or she got the infection won’t know who they got it. The person will go back into the infected water and get the disease again.

""

8. Worms growing inside of the body is a frequent cause of Schistosomiasis.

The worms get into the body because the person used the infected freshwater. In a few days, worms will develop in the blood vessels and produce eggs. The eggs may travel to other parts of the body, including the intestines and liver. The infection can make you extremely sick.

Americans who are in the tropical or subtropical countries may have a difficult time finding good doctors to examine them. It is not a good idea to travel back to the US with the disease. Even though it can’t spread from person to person, you may have to be quarantined until the infection heals.

Some doctors may not know too much about the disease and how to treat it. It is best to not play in dirty water in these countries. If you need to take a shower, go back to your hotel. There should be clean water there.
