Dysphagia is a condition that makes it difficult to swallow. It can cause pain and unable to enjoy your food because it will take you longer to eat. You may not even be able to eat at all because it’ll be difficult to swallow or the food will come back up.

There are less known common causes of dysphagia that are not as important, but you still should look out for them. Even though these are less known causes of dysphagia, they are still important. Your doctor will be able to tell you if you have dysphagia or not.

If it’s something you did on your own that caused dysphagia, such as not chewing your food, you can take steps to prevent yourself from doing it again since this is a small issue. On the other hand, your doctor may have to suggest you to do things to prevent you from making your dysphagia worse.

1. Difficulty swallowing is a less common cause of dysphagia.

A lot of people have a difficult time swallowing. This is because they don’t chew their food. They will choke on their food and it will be painful when they swallow the food. If they took the time to chew their food slowly, this wouldn’t occur. Even though difficult swallowing is a symptom of dysphagia, not everyone has the condition.

When you don’t chew your food properly, you will have the same symptoms as someone who has dysphagia. You may even vomit if you don’t chew your food. If you take your time to eat your food, you will notice that it will be easier for you to eat and swallow your food.

Food will lodge in your throat and chest as well. You will cough and gag because of not taking your time. If you don’t have dysphagia, take your time to enjoy your food.

2. Aging is a less common cause of having dysphagia.

Even though it is a condition that affects mostly older adults, it is not a sign of aging. When it happens, it is just one of those things. There may not have been anything you could have done to prevent it. If you are having issues with keeping your food down or swallowing and you’re an older adult, you should tell your doctor about it.

The doctor will tell you what you can do to allow you to keep food down, such as eating softer foods. Babies even get dysphagia, so it doesn’t mean that they’re aging.

Dysphagia can happen to anyone at any age. When it does happen, you’ll need to change the foods that you eat, so that you can enjoy eating again. It is no fun having to vomit every time you eat no matter what age you are.

Most people who have pneumonia, once it goes away, they can eat again. In fact, they can eat what they want. Pneumonia only occurs in dysphagia if it feels as if there is liquid going up your nose and down your windpipe. Your throat muscles have become weak and made it difficult to consume any liquid or food.

When you seek medical treatment for pneumonia, the doctor will let you know that you have dysphagia. Pneumonia is common in babies, so you will need to keep an eye out to make sure the baby doesn’t have dysphagia as well.

It is either the smoking or dysphagia causing the problem. The more you cough, the more pain will be felt in the chest area. If the doctor diagnoses you with dysphasia, you will need to quit smoking. It is difficult to quit cold turkey, so the doctor will put you on a smoking program to help you quit.

You should start to notice that your breathing is better and you’re able to keep your food down. The chest pain that you felt in the past, will go away. There should be no feeling of food lodged in the chest area.

Most cancer patients take radiation and can make it difficult to swallow. Once radiation treatment is finished, the cancer patient should be able to swallow without any problems.

It is imperative to let your doctor know that you are having issues with swallowing or consuming food when you have cancer. By allowing the doctor to know your symptoms, he or she can tell you what you can do in the meantime to keep your food from coming up. Some cancer patients are afraid to let their doctors know what’s going on because they don’t want to be disappointed by what the doctor has to say.

Stroke is a common cause of dysphagia, but only occurs if the person has poor health. When a person is under a lot of stress, they will have a difficult time eating. For instance, a bulimic will eat and eat until they vomit. The food is unable to make it to their stomach. By vomiting all of the time it will eventually cause damage to the esophagus, which in turn causes dysphagia.
