Polydipsia is a symptom of several types of health issues including diabetes. A person that is suffering from polydipsia should seek medical attention in order to determine the underlying cause for this symptom.

Polydipsia is most notable for causing a person to feel extremely thirsty. Typically, if a person has eaten a salty meal, sweat a lot, or spending time out in the sun, they may become very thirsty. This type of thirst is often easy to quench simply by drinking appropriate fluids.

When it comes to how much water a person needs to drink in order to stay hydrated, the amount varies based on how active they are and the type of climate that they reside in.

Polydipsia causes a person to feel extreme thirst that cannot be quenched and it can last for several days up to several weeks or longer.

Here are some of the other symptoms associated with polydipsia.

1. Frequent Urination

A person with polydipsia may notice that they are urinating quite frequently. There are several types of diseases and conditions that may also cause frequent urination.

When a person is urinating frequently the body may feel a need to constantly replace the fluids that are being lost during urination. In addition, there are some natural physical processes such as sweating, taking drugs, or eating a diet that is high in salt that can cause a person to lose a lot of fluids.

As the body is losing fluids it can cause a person to become extremely thirsty because the body inherently wants to remain hydrated and keep fluids moving throughout the body.

If you are suffering from some type of infection that is causing you to urinate frequently, you may develop polydipsia, which means that you may have a thirst that is not quenchable no matter how much you continue to drink.

2. Dry Mouth

In order to cleanse and moisten our mouths and to be able to digest foods, a person needs a constant supply of saliva. In addition, the production of saliva helps to prevent infections as it will control the fungi and bacteria that resides inside or finds its way inside of the mouth.

If you are not making enough saliva, your mouth may become uncomfortable and dry. Dry mouth is called xerostomia and it can be a symptom of polydipsia. When the mouth is not producing enough saliva it can cause a person to feel thirsty all of the time.

This thirst may be unquenchable as the person needs to constantly drink in order to keep the inside of their mouth wet. If you are experiencing dry mouth, it could be from a number of underlying health issues.

It is important to make sure that you discuss this symptom with your doctor in order to determine the underlying cause.

3. Hunger

Another symptom of polydipsia that a person may experience, especially if the underlying cause for the polydipsia is diabetes, is a feeling of hunger. This is not simply feeling hungry and then eating and feeling full.

A person who has polydipsia may also experience not only an intense thirst but an intense hunger as well. A person may feel like no matter how much they eat they never actually feel full. This can cause a person to overeat, which in turn can cause the person to become overweight.

Being overweight can cause many other health issues such as heart disease, high cholesterol, etc.

If you have noticed that you are hungrier than normal and that you simply cannot get enough to eat and you have some of the other symptoms on this list, it is important to discuss them with your doctor to determine what is causing it.

4. Blurry Vision

Another symptom that will often accompany polydipsia is a vision that becomes blurry. Some people report that they simply wake up one morning and notice that their vision is just not as clear as it was. It may seem like you are looking through a clouded lens.

There are many reasons that a person may develop a blurry vision. Diabetics often report having vision that is blurry. For this reason, if you have suddenly noticed that your vision is blurry, you are extremely thirsty all of the time and that you are urinating more than usual, it is important to make sure that you go to your doctor to find out the underlying cause.

All of these symptoms are common among those who suffer from diabetes, so it is important to make sure that you have your blood sugar tested to ensure that you have not developed this disease or if you have developed diabetes that you follow the appropriate diet in order to keep it under control.

5. Exhaustion

It is normal to feel tired when you are not sleeping well at night or if you are simply not getting enough rest. However, a person who has developed diabetes or another related health issue may feel exhaustion all of the time. This exhaustion continues no matter how much rest that a person gets.

A person who is suffering from polydipsia may also feel exhausted as an underlying symptom of the health condition that is causing the polydipsia to occur.

If you have been getting plenty of rest, but still cannot seem to get to the point where you are not feeling exhausted all of the time, there are several health conditions that could be the cause of this.

Low vitamin B, low iron levels, low vitamin D levels, heart-related conditions, and diabetes are all common causes of feelings of exhaustion. A simple blood test should be able to determine what is causing your extreme tiredness.

6. Headaches

It is quite common for a person to have a headache from time to time. In fact, most people experience headaches at least once a month or more often. There are numerous reasons that a person may develop a headache.

When a person is experiencing polydipsia, there is a chance that they will also develop a headache. This headache may be caused by an underlying condition that is causing them to experience the extreme thirst that is associated with polydipsia.

Headaches can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days. If a person is suffering from headaches that will not go away as well as the other symptoms on this list, it is important to make sure to discuss the symptoms with a doctor to determine what is causing them to feel that way.

All of these symptoms could be a sign that there is something really wrong within the body such as high or low blood sugar levels.

7. Abnormal Weight Loss

A person who is suffering from polydipsia may find that they are drinking more and more. When they are drinking only water, it could cause them to begin to lose weight. Since water tends to make a person feel full, there is a chance that a person will not be eating as much.

Of course, it could go the other way and a person may start to feel hungry all of the time as mentioned above. Losing weight naturally a few pounds each week is healthy.

However, if you notice that you have been really thirsty lately, urinating more, and have some of the other symptoms on this list, there is a chance that you may have developed a serious illness such as heart disease, diabetes, or possibly cancer.

The only true way to know why you are feeling this way and have suddenly started to lose weight is to seek medical attention as soon as possible to determine the underlying cause.

8. Water Intoxication

A person who is suffering from polydipsia is going to be extremely thirsty all of the time. When a person is thirsty they are going to drink more. Drinking water excessively can cause a person to develop water intoxication.

This is often referred to as water poisoning. Water poisoning occurs when you drink way too much water as this can dilute the amount of sodium found in the blood. When the sodium in the blood is lowered it can be quite dangerous and cause hyponatremia.

Water poisoning can lead to many symptoms such as disorientation, dizziness, headaches, unexplained seizures, and cramping or spasms of the muscles.

Water intoxication can become quite dangerous very quickly and can possibly lead to death. It is important to make sure that you do not overdo it when drinking water, so if you are feeling thirsty all of the time and cannot seem to quench your thirst over several days, see a doctor right away.
