Dysphasia is a condition that affects a person’s language skills. There are more than 200,000 cases of dysphasia in the United States each year. It can be self-treated or with a speech therapist.

There are unexplained causes of dysphasia that you will want to know. If you ever experience or know someone who suddenly has a language impairment, you will want to know what the cause was. With dysphasia, it causes a person to be unable to understand the simple things that others are saying.

It is not his or her fault. It’s just that their brain isn’t relaying the information to them correctly. In order to be sure that a person has dysphasia, a CAT scan may be needed. The medical professional can get the person in contact with the right specialist who can give him or her the right treatment.

Also, a caregiver is needed for a person with dysphasia to help them when they don’t understand things.

1. Stroke is the main cause of having dysphasia.

When you have a stroke, there is a blockage in the blood vessels of the brain that causes blood cells do not circulate. The person is unable to get oxygen to the brain. If this lasts for too long, a person can die.

When a person has a stroke, one side of their body is unable to function. They are unable to talk properly as well. It will be difficult for someone to understand what he is she is saying. In order for the person to get back to normal, they will need speech and physical therapy. It is a slow process, but the person will get their speech back.

A stroke can be prevented by eating healthy and taking their prescribed medication on a daily basis. A stroke can happen as well when a person abuses over-the-counter medications or taken medicines that they shouldn’t.

2. Brain tumors can cause dysphasia.

The brain won’t be able to function the same way because of the tumor. The tumor can either be benign or malignant. As long as the tumor is sitting on the brain, it will affect your thinking and speaking skills. For instance, when someone says something to you, you will interpret it differently.

The tumor will have to be removed in order for you to get your ability to understand things back to normal. Things that you were able to do in the past, such as write your name will become complicated with a brain tumor. As long as the tumor stays in its place, the worse the dysphasia will become. It may turn into asphasia, which is a severe case.

The best way to communicate when you have a brain tumor is through pictures because your speech will become slurred.

3. Migraines are an unexplained cause of dysphasia.

Migraines are painful and cause you to be bedridden because they are intense. In order to get relief from migraines, you have to take a prescription or over-the-counter medicine. If you take too much of the medicine, it can impair your speech because you can damage your brain.

The brain is already damaged by having migraines. If you have migraines often, over time, it will damage the brain. Migraines can occur when you take prescription medications that are too strong for you. That’s why it’s important to tell your doctor when a medicine isn’t working for you. Also, when you ween yourself off of a medicine, the side effect can include migraines.

The migraines will eventually go away, but the damage is already done. You may notice that it takes you longer to say your words or understand what someone is saying.

4. Seizures are another unexplained cause of dysphasia.

Seizures occur there is a problem with the brain. Most people think seizures cause convulsions, but not all of them do. There is abnormal activity in the brain that is causing the seizure. The person having the seizure will have difficulty talking. Once the seizure is over, they will be able to speak again.

Some people have seizures because of a condition in the brain. In order to prevent seizures, a doctor will prescribe medication to control it. A seizure can become severe where it causes death. When a seizure is present, there is an underlying condition that needs to be treated.

Once the underlying is treated, the seizures should lessen. The more seizures the person has, the more damage is being done to the brain though. A person needs to have a CAT scan often to see how the brain is working.

5. Severe head injuries are an explained cause of dysphasia.

Football players can get dysphasia because their heads take a beating when they are playing. It will cause a person to become confused and unable to talk. The brain is damaged and oxygen is unable to get to the brain. It is always a good idea to not let a person sleep when they have a brain injury.

They have to stay awake until a medical professional can run tests on him or her to diagnose what the person has. Severe head injuries can leave the person with a permanent speech impairment. The only way they can communicate is through writing and pictures.

When they speak, it won’t make any sense to the person receiving the message. It will make sense to the person though. It is important to wear a helmet when on a bike or motorcycle. You can cause damage to the brain even when you accidentally bump your head against a wall.

6. Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease can cause dysphasia.

The brain is unable to compute what is being said to him or her. When the person talks, it will take them longer to say it. With Alzheimer’s the person becomes forgetful. This usually happens to older people, but it can occur as early as the 30s. It will take the person longer to do simple tasks.

For instance, if you ask a person with Alzheimer’s a question, they will give you a wrong answer. The same with someone with Parkinson’s disease, they will shake a lot and it will have a difficult time speaking. There is cell damage in the brain because dopamine levels have decreased.

Someone with mental health issues can get Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease because their nerve cells are damaged. Their thought processes are different than a healthy person. This is a condition that can’t be avoided and it’s no one’s fault.

7. Infections can cause dysphasia.

If an infection is located in one area but spreads it can cause dysphasia. Infections weaken the immune system and it is even worse if it’s never taken care of. If the infection never gets taken care of, it will affect the brain. It will make you confused and unable to comprehend things.

The reason for this is because the infection has become severe. When treatment is finally received, it will take much longer for the infection to clear up. It may have already done damage to the brain where the person won’t be able to comprehend simple words.

One of the symptoms of dysphasia is grammar errors. The person may have had good speaking skills in the past, but now their speaking skills have diminished. It will as if the person doesn’t know how to speak correctly. The person will understand what they are saying, but you may not.

8. Ministroke can cause dysphasia.

With a ministroke, the damage isn’t as severe as a stroke. When you have a ministroke, you will still lose your ability to speak, but it will come back quicker.

The brain has a temporary blockage of blood flowing to it. Once you know that you have had a ministroke, seek medical attention right away. It is still likely that a person will experience a stroke later in life once a ministroke happens. This doesn’t happen to everyone who has a ministroke though.

When you have a ministroke, you temporarily are unable to speak or understand things. It is important to let someone know what is going on. If it happens while you are alone, make some noise and someone should come immediately.

It is a good idea also to have your phone on your person at all times, especially if you have serious health conditions.
