When it comes to natural remedies for lumbar radiculopathy, or a pinched nerve in the back, there are quite a few of them out there. These days, there are so many natural remedies available that there are dozens for each specific condition. But lumbar radiculopathy can be one of the most unpleasant symptoms that you experience.

Having a pinched nerve in your back can cause problems throughout the body, but luckily, these natural remedies can help you to alleviate the symptoms from that pinched nerve throughout many different areas.

Let’s take a look at some natural ways that you can treat your radiculopathy without having to resort to surgeries or expensive prescription medications. For those who want to go the all-natural route, there are some solutions out there that you should consider and quite a few are listed here.

1. Getting Enough Sleep

You definitely want to make sure that you’re getting enough sleep at night. When you are sleeping, your body’s healing processes are at their maximum potential. Since your body doesn’t have to worry about keeping your brain as active as possible, making sure that your digestive system is working or any of the other myriads of things that it has to regulate when you’re conscious, the body can concentrate its efforts upon healing you.

This often means that you can go to bed with the symptoms of a cold such as a runny nose or sore throat and wake up completely healed just a few hours later. That’s a perfect example of your body eating able to spend its time healing and eliminating disease and infection. You should be getting at least six hours of sleep per night and ideally, eight is a much better option.

2. Changing Your Posture

One thing that you might want to try is changing your posture. Often, the posture that you maintain can lead to pinched nerves because you are putting your back slightly out of alignment that can cause these pinched nerves. You may also be able to use muscles that have been lacking in action when you change posture and that can mean pinched nerves will reduce as well.

Changing your posture is not that difficult, but it does take some practice. The first thing that you have to notice is what your current posture is and what makes you feel more comfortable. For example, while you are at a sitting position if you tend to lean forward all the time and are experiencing pinched nerves, then try leaning back with your back straight against the chair. The way that you hold your neck can also contribute to pinched nerves.

3. Changing Your Workstation

Sometimes, it can be beneficial to change up your workstation if you are having pinched nerves. A lot of people have office chairs that they have owned for years. These office chairs often sink to the floor and no longer have the ability to raise up with pneumatics. This means that you are a lot closer to the floor and that your posture has changed.

In addition, your desk may not have come at the right height. You may be looking up at a monitor or down at once. This can often be changed just by setting your monitor or keyboard on top of something else.

There are also desks these days that will convert into standing desks so when you start to feel pinched nerves and pain you can completely change your method of working so you are in a standing position. Of course, these are the most expensive solution to the problem.

4. Finding Natural Pain Relief

If you don’t want to take prescription pain medication or even those sold over-the-counter, then you may want to look for natural pain relief. The main type of painkiller that you’re going to find in the natural world is the anti-inflammatory.

An anti-inflammatory does the same basic job of ibuprofen. It reduces inflammation. Blood vessels become more open, muscles begin to loosen and you experience pain relief because you are not experiencing that inflammation.

Sometimes, pinched nerves can be a symptom of inflammation in certain areas of the body. Taking an anti-inflammatory herbal supplement regularly may be able to give you the relief that you need.

5. Stretching

Stretching can definitely make a huge difference when it comes to preventing pinched nerves. There are certain types of stretches that you can do that will expand your muscles and make sure that they do not continue to contract and cause the radiculopathy that you are experiencing. However, it is important to do regular stretching before you do any sort of exercise. That’s because strenuous exercise can actually contribute to pinched nerves as well.

Any exercise where you stretch out your back muscles, including the shoulders and the lats, is going to be beneficial when it comes to preventing radiculopathy. Of course, stretching may not be enough so you may want to combine it with other types of natural treatment as well like the items listed here. For example, combining the way that you sit at your desk or stand with back stretches may eliminate your radiculopathy entirely.

6. Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is one of the most relaxing ways that you can get rid of pinched nerves. Massage therapy is the process of having someone work your muscles so that they are looser and more relaxed. This is obviously a terrific way that rid of back spasms if you target the right muscles.

Normally, a massage therapist will be able to tell very quickly which part of your body is the tensest and the most compressed. It is likely going to be those areas that are tight and contracted that are causing the back spasms in the first place.

Of course, massage therapy is only a temporary solution, but it may give you several days’ relief from the back spasms that you are experiencing. You would have to get a massage the least a couple times a week in order to make this a permanent solution.

7. Using a Splint

Using a splint that makes it more difficult for you to move your back into a position that causes back spasms can sometimes be helpful. This is debatable because some people have had success with splints while others have found no success with them whatsoever. That likely has to do with the different causes of back spasms.

There are a lot of things that can cause back spasms, and not all of them can be cured by a splint. However, it is just one more tool for you to add to your arsenal so that you are able to fight against back spasms using all-natural methods.

Often it is too intense of exercise that is the cause of back spasms, or it is moving the back the wrong way and shifting the muscles that are spasming. In these cases, wearing a back splint that makes you immobile might be able to help.

""

8. Elevating Your Legs

If you can elevate your legs, then you might be able to alleviate some of your back spasms as well. Sometimes, the body does not get enough blood flow into certain areas. This is especially true for those that have heart disease or diabetes.

If you notice edema or swelling of the legs and feet, and that is combined with back spasms that you are already experiencing, then you may want to try elevating your legs at night while you are sleeping in order to make it easier for blood to circulate. You may also want to talk to your doctor about the underlying causes of these conditions because heart disease and diabetes are both serious illnesses that will need to be treated right away.

However, even if there is no underlying condition, or you do not experience edema regularly, elevating your legs once in a while may allow for that blood flow to increase and the back muscles that are contracting and causing spasms to actually expand. You should only have to do it for about 30 minutes at a time twice a day.
