Prerenal azotemia is the most regularly seen form of kidney failure that is observed in hospitalized patients. It is especially common for those in long term care facilities to be diagnosed with this form of kidney failure and this is only added to if a person has been diagnosed with dehydration.

A lack of proper kidney function can be very detrimental for a person’s overall health and it is often the case that a person will experience lots of troubling signs and symptoms on the road to diagnosis and in the time afterward.

Azotemia sufferers find that they too suffer from many typical signs and symptoms, ranging from the mildly annoying to the worrying and the extremely painful. It really should be no surprise at all to anyone to learn that kidney failure can cause difficulties, and here is a list of some of the most commonly seen signs of azotemia.

1. Reduced urine production

Someone suffering from azotemia may find that their output of urine is significantly reduced, leading to an increased risk of that person developing urinary tract infections and other similar problems. It’s always a worrying sign when the body loses its regularity, as it can be indicative of a wide range of underlying issues.

The best thing to do if you find that you are outputting less urine than you normally would is to consult a doctor or a medical professional for advice, however, it would also be a good idea to try and drink some water to make sure that you’re not just a little dehydrated.

People can sometimes tend to get a little squeamish when it comes to talking about going to the bathroom, and that’s just silly because it’s something we all have to do whether we like it or not. Talking about it means problems can be shared and solved with more ease.

2. Confusion and decreased alertness

Sometimes azotemia can cause a person to experience what can only be described as confusion. This confusion usually comes with a decreased alertness that can be problematic for people who may be trying to go about their daily business.

Things like driving and operating heavy machinery are things to avoid for anyone suffering from this typical sign of azotemia. One patient described their confusion to a researcher as something that came and went like night and day, leaving just as quickly as it came on.

They said that one minute they could be tying their shoelaces and the next minute find themselves in the bathroom holding a hairdryer and a set of matches, not exactly sure how or why they ended up in that situation.

Not everyone will experience such strange episodes of confusion but it’s always worth pointing out the farther-flung reaches of the spectrum so that anyone experiencing anything similar will be able to relate.

3. Thirst

People suffering from azotemia may find that they develop an excessive thirst or a thirst that can’t seem to be quenched. For most people, this can be something that is easily managed by grabbing a quick drink, but for people who may not have easy access to liquids throughout the day, this sign or symptom can range from the annoying to the distracting and right through the impossible to cope with.

Usually, drinking water is the best way to address an excessive thirst but there are people out there who claim not to like drinking water, for whatever reason that may be. Maybe it’s all to do with the lack of sugar and artificial sweeteners in the natural liquid, or maybe it’s because they don’t like how clear and trustworthy water is. Who knows?

Whatever the reason, anyone who tries to quench an excessive thirst with sodas or fizzy liquids may find causing more complications for themselves than they ever needed to, due to the increased consumption of harmful ingredients.

4. Abdominal pain

Yet another typical sign of azotemia can be horrible abdominal pain. Imagine being punched in the stomach by Mike Tyson. Whoever you are and at whatever stage you’re at in life, getting hit by Tyson is going to hurt. Or let’s say you’ve suddenly decided to make it your mission to achieve stunning abs and on the route to your goal you’ve decided to start doing about a hundred crunches a day.

In either of those scenarios you can imagine that the abdominal pain would be a force to be reckoned with, and you’d be right, but what’s startling is the fact that both of these feelings on their own are no match for the pain that comes with azotemia.

In fact, even if you doubled the pain of those two hypothetical situations, you still wouldn’t come close to the abdominal pain caused by this kidney failure related condition. So it must be bad!

5. Rapid pulse

There are lots of things in life that set the pulse racing and generally, they can be divided into two camps, the good and the bad. The good camp might include things like a sensual encounter with an attractive person, that might set your pulse racing.

A day at the track in a fast car might set the pulse racing too, even more so for some people. If you’re a thrill-seeker and going on rollercoasters is your thing, you may well just find that you see your pulse rise, but that’s what you wanted! In terms of things that get the pulse racing that falls under the bad category, we’re talking about things to do with health.

If you break a bone in your body or suffer a nasty slip, trip or fall, it’s more than likely that your pulse will start to rise. The same is true for azotemia, another thing that causes a rapid pulse that could be described as bad.

6. Dry mouth

When you see it written down on the page in amongst some of the more troubling signs and symptoms, dry mouth might not seem like too much to worry about, as it really isn’t that much of a big issue, unless it lasts for an unusually long time, in which case it becomes incredibly annoying and difficult to live with.

Now, most people reading this would jump to the conclusion that the quickest and simplest way to ease a dry mouth would be to just have a drink. In most situations, they’d be right and the best way to ease a dry mouth would be to have a quick drink of your favorite beverage, but when it comes to azotemia, it really isn’t as simple as that.

The kind of dry mouth we’re talking about here is one that persists and lingers for up to a couple of weeks. That’s a dry mouth that will need lubricating and lubricating over and over again.

7. Increased Urination at Night

Just when you thought your days of rushing back and forth to the restroom at night were over, here they are again. You had it when you were a toddler, potty training and trying to not wet the bed. You had it in childhood as you went through a spell of bed wetting. Into the teenage years and there it was again, back and forth to the bathroom.

As an adult you might have experienced increased urination at night as a result of drinking one too many alcoholic beverages, we’ve all been there.

Well, if you thought those days were behind you and you have azotemia, you were wrong because one of the most typical signs or symptoms of this condition is increased urination at night time. Just what you wanted to hear, or not.

Getting a good night’s sleep can be hard enough without having to wake up every few minutes to relieve yourself.

8. Signs or Symptoms of Infection Elsewhere in the Body

Infection that occurs anywhere in the body is something that people want to rid themselves of as quickly as possible. There are lots of different types of infections that can occur, with many of them developing as a result of another condition affecting a person.

Azotemia has the potential to cause people all sorts of problems as it can mimic the signs or symptoms of infection in other areas of the body, making it a body-wide health issue as opposed to being limited to the kidneys.

This list of 8 typical symptoms of azotemia is in no way exhaustive, but it is a good starting point for people looking to find out more about the condition and how it can affect a person’s overall health and wellbeing.

Anyone that feels they are showing some of these signs or symptoms would be best advised to go to a doctor for an opinion and to seek a diagnosis.
