Most of the time, gallbladder pain has a pretty specific cause. Hard particles that form because of an imbalance of the substance that the gallbladder secretes to aid in digestion or the gallbladder not functioning properly can lead to what is commonly known as gallstones.

Gallstones can be extremely small but they can also grow large up to the size of the small golf ball. You can have gallstones and not have any symptoms, but other times they can interfere with your digestive system or result in intense pain when a gallstone blocks one of your biliary ducts which contain your gallbladder in your bile ducts.

In addition, having gallstones can lead to much more serious conditions. But there are a few other causes of gallbladder pain as well. But sing a look at some of the other common causes of gallbladder pain so you can see the entire scope of common symptoms.

1. Biliary Sludge

One of the other common causes of gallbladder pain may be biliary sludge. Biliary sludge refers to the thickened bile salts they can form sometimes in the gallbladder.

This biliary sludge has the same basic effect of gallstones blocking the biliary ducts because it prevents healthy bile from emptying out of the gallbladder and can result in the same symptoms and complications as gallstones. You have to look for the symptoms and then talk to your doctor to find out exactly what the cause is in order for the right treatment to be prescribed.

The common way to diagnose this condition is transabdominal ultrasonography. This is not as common as the gallstones themselves, but it is one of the more common causes of gallbladder pain. The sludge forms from the combination of cholesterol crystals, calcium bilirubin pigment, and other calcium salts.

2. Acute Cholecystitis

There are also cases where a gallstone can become stuck within the gallbladder itself and cause major problems. The first thing that you will notice is inflammation. This information is definitely going to cause pain known as biliary colic.

This pain happens in the upper right part of the abdomen and most people would describe it as dull, cramping pain. The cramping can be quite severe and make you feel as if you are being squeezed inside. In addition to this, you may also experience a loss of appetite.

You may either field not like eating or not eat as much is used to and other symptoms that do not seem to be related to an abdominal condition such as fever can happen as well with accompanied vomiting. If you

""

3. Acalculous Cholecystitis

The other type of cholecystitis is acalculous cholecystitis. This actually results in the exact same symptoms as the other kind of cholecystitis.

The first thing that you are likely notice is inflammation which is going to cause abdominal pain in the exact same area as the previous – namely in the upper right part of the abdomen. It is going to be cramping pain those known scientifically as biliary colic pain is often accompanied by symptoms like nausea, fever, vomiting and a major reduction in appetite.

The difference is that the symptoms are not caused by the gallstones. In fact, researchers are not exactly sure what causes this condition. However, it is usually seen with people that have a major infection or are on mechanical ventilation.

People that are severely ill, especially burn victims, have a greater chance of developing this condition.

""

4. Acute Cholangitis

You might also find that acute cholangitis is the cause of the gallbladder pain that you are experiencing. This happens when you get an infection in the common bile duct.

We will notice that all of these things are connected. For example, an obstructing gallstone can yet again be the underlying cause of this as well. However, that is not the only thing that can cause acute cholangitis. It can also happen due to a stricture in the bile duct or various forms of cancer.

If this is the cause of the gallbladder pain, then you are usually going to be feeling and in the upper right side of the abdomen and it will be accompanied by fever and jaundice or yellowing of the eyes; which is a result of liver failure. In severe cases, low blood pressure and mental confusion may be symptoms as well.

""

5. Rupture of the Gallbladder

If your gallbladder happens to rupture or burst open then that is definitely going to result in serious gallbladder pain. This is definitely an emergency situation, and you should always take any of the symptoms seriously that are listed here, but in the case of this injury, the pain is going to be in the upper right quadrant of the abdominals just as it is in the other scenarios.

There are a couple of ways in which this might happen. Gallbladder may rupture as a result of serious gallbladder inflammation such as cholecystitis. But your gallbladder bursting can also be the result of a major injury. For example, it can happen as the result of a motor vehicle accident and it will present immediately and extremely intensely.

Rupture of the gallbladder is something the need to seek treatment for immediately.

""

6. Biliary Dyskinesia

Biliary Dyskinesia could also be the cause of your gallbladder pain. This is a gallbladder motility syndrome that happens when a muscular valve controls the flow bile stops working properly. This condition makes it so that bile does not properly drain any causes of gallbladder pain.

Like with any of the other gallbladder pain that we’ve discussed here, the pain will be located in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen. Of course, this will not give you any indication that this is because the specific cause is biliary dyskinesia, but if this pain is accompanied by vomiting and nausea only, then this could be the cause.

The best way to find out the exact cause of your gallbladder pain is to talk to your doctor. They have tested they can run to find out and treatment may be different depending upon the cause.

""

7. Gallbladder Disease

Gallbladder disease might be a potential cause of her gallbladder pain as well. Chronic acalculous gallbladder dysfunction, which is the scientific name for gallbladder disease can definitely cause some of the other symptoms that we have discussed. Of course, the gallbladder is a small organ that fits directly underneath the liver.

The gallbladder is where your bile is stored and it is released whenever you need it for digestion. Functional gallbladder disease is the name for any regular dysfunction of the gallbladder that happens on a regular basis. Many of the other things that we have been discussing here could have been part of having gallbladder disease if they were to happen regularly.

That’s because gallbladder disease is basically a term to refer to the gallbladder that isn’t working properly as it should. The symptoms of gallbladder disease are the same symptoms that we have discussed throughout this article – nausea, vomiting and definitely pain where the gallbladder sits in the body.

""

8. Gallbladder Cancer

Of course, the problem might be gallbladder cancer, but you shouldn’t worry because this is a rare cause of gallbladder pain. It is lucky that gallbladder cancer is rare because it is not easy to diagnose until it gets to its advanced stages.

The symptoms of gallbladder cancer include the same gallbladder pain already discussed here as well as jaundice and nausea. Your doctor will tell you if the cause could be gallbladder cancer, but it is likely that they won’t be able to tell you until much later. Gallbladder cancer isn’t that different from other types of cancers and there are certain tests that your doctor will be able to do to determine where cancer came from.

As far as treatment goes, you can recover from gallbladder cancer but it is more difficult because it is often more advanced. Otherwise, the treatments are the same as they would be for other types of cancer. You will be referred to an oncologist and they will begin treatment such as chemotherapy and radiation.

""

9. Medication Side-Effects

There are some types of medication that can cause gallbladder pain and many types of medication that can help to make the associated pain worse. If you can connect any recent pain or discomfort to medication that you have started taking within the past few days or months (or have stopped taking within the same time period), you should consider it a potential cause.

Make an appointment with your doctor first if you suspect that your medication might be the cause of gallbladder pain. Never stop taking any kind of medication without speaking to your doctor first, who can help you to find out whether or not anything else can be prescribed in its place.

Usually there are alternate medications to replace the ones causing the problem, and usually these won’t have the same associated side-effects that the first ones did. If the problem persists, it might be time to speak to another doctor for a second opinion.

""

10. A High-Fat Diet

Everyone knows that a healthy diet is one of the most important keys to developing a healthy lifestyle. Experiencing “gallbladder attacks” on a regular basis could point to the fact that you are following a diet that contains too many substances your body is unable to process. Sometimes these gallbladder attacks can be related to eating something specific – for example, rich oxtail with too much salt and fat for your body at that point in time.

If you notice any type of condition flare-ups like this, cut down on the meal or ingredient that you think might be causing it and see your doctor. A nutritional specialist can also help to align your diet with what your body’s needs should be.

Also, remember that there’s a clear difference between “bad fats” and “good fats” – good fats are ones like plant oils, while bad ones are ones like grease. More of the one and less of the other is the key to better health.

""

11. Recent Surgery

Sometimes surgery is the only way to get rid of so-called “gallstones” and even though the surgery is a minor and fast one, there is still a certain amount of pain and discomfort that can be associated with the operation. This usually lasts for a few days through to a few weeks after the operation and it’s to be expected. The pain disappears as the surgery site heals during this time period.

Any pain that lasts for longer than this or becomes more intense should be considered a further medical symptom that means you should make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible. While some pain is to be expected, any additional pain felt near the gallbladder on top of this isn’t normal and could point to further health issues.

""

12. Excess Caffeine Consumption

There are many different potential dietary triggers that might be too much for your body to process properly and might cause a subsequent gallbladder attack during which you experience discomfort and pain. Sometimes encountering the trigger occasionally isn’t enough to set off a full episode of pain, but consuming too much of it can have this effect.

Caffeine is one of the most common triggers for gallbladder pain, and if you experience pain shortly after drinking it along with symptoms like increased urination and headaches or flare-ups of other conditions such as acne, you could have a natural sensitivity to caffeine and should avoid it. In some more extreme cases, caffeine allergies are possible, too.

If you still enjoy the taste of coffee but want to do it without the added side-effects, it’s a strong argument for switching to decaf. If a lack of energy is your reason for chasing caffeine, see your doctor and talk about healthier means to improve your energy levels.

""

13. Direct Gallbladder Impact

Car accidents, assaults and a range of other physical injuries that cause an impact directly to the gallbladder can sometimes also be a source of pain. Swelling might also be associated with the pain after the injury, and might benefit from the application of pressure and heat right after the injury has taken place.

Because of the nature of shock and the fight or flight response, many people might not realize the extent of the injury or pain directly after something has happened. This is why emergency services responding to emergencies like car accidents and fires will insist that everyone gets checked by first-aid before they leave even when they might appear fine.

If you suspect that you have had a serious direct impact or injury to your gallbladder, see your doctor for the proper scans.

""

14. Additives in Food and Snacks

There are more food triggers than the ones that have been already mentioned here which can increase your likelihood of experiencing gallbladder pain and the associated discomfort. Sometimes it’s not the foods themselves causing the issue, but instead something in the food (that can be found on the list of ingredients or label).

Additives like MSG in foods and snacks can have a range of adverse effects on your health, particularly if you have a sensitivity or allergy to the product. If you experience any pain or allergy-like symptoms after consuming your favorite snack, make an appointment with your doctor or an allergy specialist who can help.

Start your own investigation into potential trigger foods and additives at home by removing certain components from your diet to see which ones make the most of a difference.

If you’re still experiencing any pain and discomfort after this, consult with your doctor.
