Wrist pain shouldn’t be ignored because there could be an underlying issue that is causing it. If you ignore it, the pain will more than likely get worse.

In order to get relief from wrist pain, you’ll need to go to the doctor to see what is causing it. You don’t want to continue working on wrist pain because it can lead to wrist tendonitis, which will cause you to not be able to use your wrist at all.

Not all pain in the wrist is a cause to seek medical treatment, but if you see swelling and feel intense pain, that is when it’s time to visit your doctor. When you’re experiencing wrist pain, you’ll want to know what caused it in the first place. Once you find out what caused it, you can take steps to prevent it from happening again.

There are eight causes of wrist pain you shouldn’t ignore.

1. Repetitive stress is a cause of wrist pain.

Any activity that causes you to use your wrists for hours on end, it can cause inflammation around the tissues of the joints and cause stress fractures.

Some activities that can cause wrist pain are tennis, golfing, or driving. You can wear wrist splints to protect your wrists. The wrist splints will allow you to keep your wrists in the correct position to prevent you from furthering injuring them.

It is a good idea to take a break often when performing any activity that causes you to use your wrist. You can even perform wrist exercises to loosen up the joints in the wrists. It is also a good idea to always have proper form when performing activities that causes you to put a lot of stress on the wrists.

A lot of injuries can be prevented by using proper form. When you do any activity take your time.

""

2. Sudden impacts such as falling on your hand when it is stretched out can cause wrist pain.

This can cause fractures, strains, and sprains. When you have a scaphoid fracture, it won’t show up on the X-ray right away.

The scaphoid fracture is when there is an injury to the bone on the side of the wrist. Sudden impacts can happen anywhere, including at the grocery store or outside. If you are on a wet, slippery surface, you can fall down. A fall can happen on a dry surface as well. That’s why it’s important to always be aware of your surroundings.

One fall can cause a lot of pain, not just physically, but emotionally. By falling, you may not be able to do the things you enjoy anymore.

If you are still able to do some things, you may be limited. For instance, if you enjoy doing yard work, you will be limited in what you will be able to do.

3. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a cause of having wrist pain.

This is common for individuals who do a lot of typing. They are prone to have their wrists in awkward positions. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when there is intense pressure on the nerve that passes through the carpal tunnel.

The carpal tunnel is a passageway that is located on the palm side of the wrist. When there is a pain in that area, you will experience carpal tunnel syndrome. It can be self-treated, but if there is nothing done about it, the only way to get relief is through surgery.

It is important to have your hands in the proper position on the keyboard when typing. Carpal tunnel syndrome can be prevented by doing so. Wrist splints are good to wear when you have carpal tunnel syndrome. It will prevent you from putting more pressure on the nerves in the wrist.

""

4. Rheumatoid arthritis is one of the causes of having wrist pain.

Rheumatoid arthritis usually affects the wrist. When it affects one wrist, the one other usually becomes affected as well.

Rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the immune system attacks its own tissues. When it comes to treating rheumatoid arthritis, you don’t want to put ice on it because it’ll make the pain worse. You’ll want to use a heating pad or rub heat salve on it.

Rheumatoid arthritis will cause you to limit your activities. When an episode occurs, you won’t be able to complete your activity. There is no cure for rheumatoid arthritis, but it can be managed with medication and physiotherapy.

A wrist splint may be an option, but the pain may still be there even when wearing it. The best thing you can do for yourself is to let your wrist rest until the pain goes away.

""

5. Ganglion cysts are painful to the wrists, which you shouldn’t ignore.

When you have ganglion cysts, it may be painful, but sometimes performing an activity can relieve it. Ganglion cysts are soft tissue cysts that occur near the part of the wrist that is opposite of the palm.

When you have ganglion cysts, it can be removed or drained. A lot of the times it doesn’t need to be treated. It can restrict your ability to move your wrist if you are experiencing pain.

You should seek medical attention right away once you experience wrist pain and the lump. The lump itself should make you want to seek medical treatment.

Even if it can be self-treated, a doctor needs to make a diagnosis to determine if it is ganglion cysts and what course of treatment is needed. You may want to have the lump removed because some cysts can turn into cancer.

""

6. Osteoarthritis in the wrist occurs when there has been an injury to the wrist in the past.

The cartilage that cushions the bones will deteriorate over time, which causes osteoarthritis.

A heating pad or heating salve will ease the pain and swelling. With osteoarthritis, you will be limited on what you can do because when you have a flare-up, you won’t be able to complete an activity or task.

For instance, someone suffering from osteoarthritis in the wrist may be in the middle of knitting and start to have pain. Sometimes the pain can last all day. It still shouldn’t be ignored if you are experiencing osteoarthritis.

Your doctor may be able to prescribe medication that can help ease the pain. It can’t be cured but can be managed. Stretching the wrists can help alleviate the pain as well. Also, losing weight can help, especially if there is a lot of fat around the wrist.

""

7. Kienbock’s disease is a disorder that shouldn’t be ignored.

It affects mostly young adults and causes the small bones in the wrist to collapse. The blood supply to the wrist is compromised, which can lead to bone death.

Even though there is no cure, there are treatments available that will help relieve pain and increase the supply of blood to the wrist.

When a young adult experiences pain, they need to go to their primary care physician who can conduct X-rays and blood tests to diagnose the condition.

The sooner Kienbock’s disease is treated, the sooner he or she can get relief from wrist pain. Once it’s treated, the young adult may still be able to live a normal life.

It is important for the young adult to keep his or her wrist in the proper position when performing tasks to prevent any unnecessary pain. It may be a good idea to take breaks as well.

""

8. Texting can cause wrist pain because you’re using two thumbs and it causes stress to the wrists.

Texting is one of the most highly addictive things that individuals do on a daily basis. Even when they are at work, they are still texting. By doing this constantly, you are causing stress to your wrists. When you text, you should place the phone on a table.

The only time the phone should be picked up is when you are talking to someone or about to leave to go somewhere.

Most people if they are having wrist pain while texting, they will ignore it because if they are in the middle of something important. They will only stop if the pain becomes intense. By that time, it may be too late and the only way to treat the pain is through surgery.

There should be a limitation on how long your text on a daily basis.

9. Diabetes

More than 30-million Americans live with the blood sugar disorder diabetes. A further 70-million people in the United States are living with prediabetes, which is the precursor condition of diabetes. When we eat carbohydrates the pancreas releases insulin, a hormone responsible for balancing blood sugar.

However, people who have diabetes lose control of the function of the pancreas, losing their ability to producing insulin. As a result, they require exogenous administration of insulin injections after eating a meal.

Diabetes can cause a slew of secondary health issues in the affected individual, one of which is wrist pain. Diabetes causes a mineral imbalance in the body, accelerating the rate at which calcium leaches from the bones. Calcium is a vital mineral for maintaining bone health, as well as initiating new bone cell creation.

As a result of this loss of calcium, the affected individual may start to develop symptoms of osteoarthritis affecting the joints. If you notice an increase in pain in your joints, coupled with feelings of fatigue after eating, visit your doctor for a blood test to check for diabetes.

""

10. Gout

Gout describes an inflammatory condition that occurs in individuals that have exceedingly high levels of uric acid present in the bloodstream. Uric acid settles in the joints, forming needle-like crystals that create symptoms of severe pain when the affected individual flexes their joints. It’s common for gout to attack the extremities, and many patients notice symptoms of the condition in the ankles and wrists.

In most cases of gout, the condition will resolve on its own and does not require a visit to the doctor’s room for treatment. Most cases of gout last between 48 and 72-hours, with symptoms peeking 24-hours after noticing the initial signs of pain. Patients may gain some relief from their symptoms through the use of over-the-counter painkillers, and anti-inflammatories.

In most cases, people that are affected by gout experience an attack after eating or drinking foods that cause the development of uric acid. Avoiding fast food, alcohol, and smoking can help to reduce the frequency of attacks as well as the intensity of symptoms.

""

11. Obesity

Nearly two-thirds of all Americans have a body mass index showing that they are either overweight or obese. Obesity is fast becoming an epidemic in America, and there’s never been a time in human history where so many individuals have been overweight or obese.

Access to cheap fast food and poor dietary choices means that many individuals lack the constraint and nutritional knowledge necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Convenience foods and the abundance of sugar in soda and snacks mean that Americans have immediate access to satisfy their hunger any time of the day. As a result, many people may develop eating disorders where they consume too many calories in a given day.

Obesity leads to the onset of numerous adverse health conditions, including diabetes, costing American taxpayers billions of dollars each year.

Obese individuals may place additional weight on the joints exceeding the structural integrity of the bones and cartilage. As a result, the overweight individual is at risk of joint pain in the wrists, ankles, knees, hips, and lower back.

12. Sports Injuries

Individuals who compete and train in sports are at higher risk of sustaining an injury to the muscles, ligaments, and joints. Contact sports like football, basketball, and mixed martial arts, all involve intensive training and competition that predisposes the athlete to injury.

One of the most common injuries in sports is sprains, strains, and fractures to the wrist. These injuries occur due to impact or trauma to the wrist – such as when a football player is tackled to the ground and uses the wrists to break the fall. This impact results in the onset of a fracture or sprain, as well as symptoms of pain and inflammation.

Fortunately, it’s possible to prevent these types of injuries with the use of wrist guards and support bandages. These training accessories provide additional strength to the wrist and help the athlete avoid sprains and fractures.

Those athletes that sustain a wrist injury should seek immediate medical attention to check on the extent of the damage. The use of X-rays and a physical examination by a doctor determines the status of the joint.

""

13. Tendonitis

Tendonitis describes a condition where the patient experiences inflammation of a ligament. This inflammation occurs due to repetitive motion, or trauma to the affected tendon. There are a variety of reasons why people may develop tendonitis, but some of the more common forms of the condition involving the wrist, include carpal tunnel syndrome.

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs due to trapping of the median nerve that runs through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. As a result of the inflammation, the patient may start to notice pain in their forearms and wrist, as well as a loss of feeling in the fingers and thumb. If left untreated and unmanaged, carpal tunnel can result in symptoms of extreme pain, and a complete loss of sensation in the affected hand.

In most cases, it’s possible to treat this condition if the patient receives a diagnosis early on. Massage therapy and acupuncture may help to slow the effects. The patient should avoid all activities that led to the onset of carpal tunnel syndrome.

""

14. Bursitis

There are more than 150-bursae in the human body. Bursa is a tiny fluid-filled sac that provides a cushioning effect to the joints. When the bursa experiences the onset of inflammation, it results in the development of the condition known as bursitis.

Bursitis may lead to pain in the affected joint, and common areas for the development of this condition include the wrist and hips. In most cases, bursitis occurs due to repetitive motion or stress on the affected joint.

When a person experiences the onset of bursitis in the wrist, it’s typically due to repetitive motion. If you spend many hours of the day with your hand on your mouse in front of your computer, then it’s advisable that use a memory foam pad to prevent inflammation of the bursa.

Those people that do not take the necessary precautions, such as the use of an ergonomic mouse pad, may find that their symptoms of inflammation and pain increase whenever they try to use the affected wrist.
