Varicocele is an enlargement of the veins in the scrotum. It is a condition that affects more than three million people in the United States each year. It is similar to varicose veins that are seen in the legs. The cause of varicocele is a low sperm count, which can cause infertility.

Varicocele doesn’t always affect sperm. Sometimes the testicles will shrink and not develop the way they are supposed to. When it comes to varicocele, they develop slowly. When a doctor diagnoses the condition, it doesn’t need to be treated. If the condition does need to be treated, surgery can be done. Varicocele has no symptoms, but when it does there are eight discomforting symptoms to look out for.

As soon as you develop symptoms it is important to visit your primary care physician, so he or she can diagnose it and tell you what you need to do to relieve yourself of the symptoms.

1. Sharp to dull discomfort pain is a symptom you will experience.

It may make you feel embarrassed because people around you will want to know what is wrong when you wince, especially if the pain is intense. When you go to the doctor, he or she may suggest for you take Tylenol for pain. If the pain is bothersome, the doctor will recommend repairing varicocele by having surgery.

On the other hand, if the pain is bearable, you may not even notice the pain. It will become second nature to you. As was stated before most people don’t have symptoms, so this only happens in rare cases. Even in rare cases, there are steps you can take to ease the pain.

Taking a hot bath or shower can ease the pain as well. The hot water will allow the muscles to relax, which will make the pain go away.

2. Infertility is a common symptom that you could face with having varicocele.

The reason for this is the production and quality of sperm. A couple who is wanting to have children will have a difficult time because their sperm is bad. Some men don’t experience infertility, but men who do can cause a strain in their relationships.

Most couples want children, so whenever one partner is the cause of not being able to have a child, it can be difficult. In order to find out if the cause of not having children is infertility, both partners need to have tests done. Once it is found that the man has a low sperm count, the couple needs to find other ways to have a child.

The primary care physician can get the couple in contact with an organization that can help them to adopt a child or find a surrogate.

3. Lying on your back is the only way to get relief from varicocele.

It will be difficult for the man to work because he has to be on his back all day in order to not experience pain. During the day, if he works, he’ll be in pain. The pain he experiences may not be intense, but if it is it’ll be difficult for him to complete his tasks.

The only way he will be able to get relief is by having surgery, especially if it causes him to be unable to do his work. At night, he’ll get relief because he can just lie on his back, but once he gets up, it’s a whole other story. This is a disability for the man because he has to be in one position in order to get relief. His doctor will suggest surgery since he can’t work and place him on disability.

4. Increased pain when standing for a long period of time is a symptom of varicocele.

Whether it’s at work or home, there will come a time when you will have to stand for a long period of time. Varicocele will cause the pain to get worse when standing. It will cause the man to have to sit down a lot. Men who have this condition will need to get a doctor’s note to be able to sit down when doing their work.

For instance, factory workers have to stand for their entire work shift, so a man who is experiencing varicocele won’t be able to do his job because he’ll be in pain. His supervisor may allow him to sit to complete his factory work, but he’ll be much slower since he’s sitting. On the other hand, if he already has a desk job, it won’t matter because he’s sitting down all down anyways.

""

5. Worsen pain over the course of the day is common when he has varicocele.

For instance, in the morning, the pain is light, but by the end of the day, it’s intense where he can barely stand. The next day it may do it all over again by being light and by the end of the day it’s intense. He needs to visit his primary care physician so he or she can let him know what he needs to do when he’s experiencing the pain.

Varicocele requires no treatment, but a man needs to be able to take something in order to relieve the pain. His doctor may give him a prescription painkiller for the pain. He can even take Tylenol. With prescription pain medicine, it has side effects, such as drowsiness. You may not want to take this at work or while driving. The pain will go away with medicine, but you’ll be too tired to do anything.

""

6. Swollen testicles are a discomforting symptom of varicocele.

When the testicles become swollen, antibiotics may help to get the swelling down, but with varicocele, surgery may be the only way to get rid of it. With swollen testicles, there may be some pain. It will be difficult to sit down because the pain may be intense. It will be embarrassing because you will wince whenever the pain is present.

On the other hand, you may not experience any pain with swollen testicles. It may just be an uncomfortable feeling. It will be difficult for a man to maintain a relationship because he’ll be embarrassed to let the woman see his testicles. She may ask questions on why it’s swollen. It may raise a red flag with her, making her believe he has an STD or sexually transmitted disease.

He needs to be honest with the woman he’s in a relationship with, so she won’t be scared to be with him.

""

7. Shrinking testicles occur when you have varicocele.

It is something that you can’t control and it will happen with the condition. It may be embarrassing because it will make the man feel less of a man because his testicles are getting smaller. Once his doctor diagnoses varicocele, he or she can let the man know what can be done to keep them from getting smaller.

There really isn’t anything that can be done besides surgery. Once the surgery is complete it should stop the testicles from shrinking. In fact, the testicles may go back to their normal size. When it comes to surgery it takes a lot of thought because it’s a big decision. Surgery may be your only option if you are experiencing pain with a swollen testicle.

If the swollen testicle can be managed without surgery, surgery may not be needed. It is just something that you will have to accept.

""

8. Physical exertion will increase the pain because when you exercise or do anything strenuous, it can cause pain.

You will be on your feet the entire time exercising and it will put a strain on your body. You may have to give up on doing the strenuous exercise until you and your doctor can come up with a solution that won’t cause you pain.

When you exercise, you may have to sit down. You can still get a good workout by sitting and moving your body. Besides exercising you may not be able to do physical activities, such as mowing the lawn, especially if you are using a push mower.

That will cause you to be on your feet for quite some time. It will become difficult to do the things you enjoy doing. Surgery may be something you may want to consider. Your doctor will let you know if that is the best option for you.

"This

9. Enlarged or Twisted Veins

One of the varicocele symptoms involves the enlargement of the vein providing blood flow to the testes. The veins can become engorged with blood and expand, creating a mass of veins that feels like “worms” inside the scrotum. The atrophy of the affected teste may also make the enlargement of the veins more pronounced in the affected individual.

In most cases, the veins won’t cause any pain or discomfort. However, if the patient does experience frequent pain and discomfort, the doctor may decide to operate to remove the varicocele. In some cases, the veins in the affected teste and around the scrotum may twist, causing pain in the affected teste.

Twisting of the veins is much more serious than their enlargement, and they may cause prolonged pain symptoms that don’t subside with treatment. If that’s the case, the doctor may elect to complete surgery to remove the varicocele. The patient makes a full recovery in most cases, but the atrophied teste may not recover.

"This

10. Pain that Subsides after a Warm Bath

Some patients, especially young people, may find that the pain from the varicocele subsides when they take a warm bath. The heat from the water penetrates the tissues in the scrotum, improving circulation around the affected teste. As a result, the patient may notice that the symptoms slowly fade away, gaining relief from the pain.

However, there are some cases where this treatment may not decrease the pain. If that’s the case, you’ll need to speak to your doctor and have them refer you to a urologist. Pain in the testes can occur due to various illnesses, including cancer and severe infection.

If the pain doesn’t subside after a few days, make an appointment with the urologist. The doctor will take an ultrasound of the scrotum and testes to confirm no cancer or infection in the affected teste or testes. The doctor may treat the problem with pain killers, but anti-inflammatory medications usually do not affect the pain symptoms produced by varicocele.
