""

Necrotizing fasciitis is a condition more commonly known as flesh-eating bacteria or flesh-eating disease. It is a very serious medical condition that can be fatal if not treated right away. The name comes from the fact that the bacteria causing the infection actually does destroy tissue and cause tissue death around the infection site and then further as it spreads throughout the body.

There are between 600 and 700 cases in the United States each year and of those, as many as 30% result in death. Most people who get the disease are adults. You can get necrotizing fasciitis in several ways but usually enters through some kind of cut or abrasion. This might happen due to a small cut on the hands or arms or legs, an insect bite somewhere on the body, or through the small punctures in the skin created when there is an abrasion.

1. Flu-Like Symptoms

The first symptoms that you are going to notice are flulike symptoms. Flulike symptoms are particularly alarming because they seem so innocent. You may not even realize that you have necrotizing fasciitis with the symptoms. You may think that you simply have a cold or flu. In many cases, the patient does not realize that they have something more serious than a cold or flu until they start to experience some of the other symptoms that are listed here.

Unfortunately, if you wait until it is too late, then even the IV antibiotics and other treatments for the flesh-eating disease may not be effective. That’s why you want to be so hyper-aware of the symptoms so that at the very first sign that your cold or flu is not normal you can go in and get checked out. Your doctor has the ability to test for necrotizing fasciitis very easily.

""

2. Pain that Keeps Increasing around Infected Area

When you get a cut or abrasion and it gets infected with the bacteria that cause necrotizing fasciitis, there is going to be a great deal of pain. This is actually a good thing because it is one of the early warning signs and it is a warning sign that is unique enough to give you a clue that you have necrotizing fasciitis and not something else the pain you are going to feel will be markedly different than if you had just cut yourself.

Most people with a small cut on their hand feel the pain for a couple of hours afterward at the most. Once the cut is covered up with a Band-Aid, you go about your day and do not think of it any longer unless you irritate it somehow. But with necrotizing fasciitis, the bacteria gets in there and begins destroying tissue which causes severe pain on levels that you would not normally feel.

""

3. Redness & Warmth around the Affected Area & Other Parts of the Body

You may also experience redness and warmth around the affected area as well as in other parts of the body. It usually starts in the area where the cut or abrasion is and where the bacteria entered the body. This is another terrific clue that will let you know that what you are experiencing is necrotizing fasciitis and not a cold or flu.

Cold or flu symptoms often include chills and fever, but when a certain part of the body is warm or hot, it generally means that there is some kind of infection inside the skin. Often, this is around the affected area but it may be another part of the body as well, you can use this clue to determine if you have something serious the needs immediate treatment such as a bacterial infection from necrotizing fasciitis or Staphylococcus.

""

4. Purple Rashes That Can Transform into Blisters

Look out for purple rashes that transform into blisters. These purple rashes may look like a rash or they may look like a bruise. In either case, they will often bubble up and become blisters making them even more painful than they were before. You may also notice swelling around the affected area. All of these symptoms usually start around the affected area, but they can easily spread to other parts of the body if the bacteria spreads throughout the body.

You also notice that the blisters are filled with fluid and if a blister becomes damaged, you will notice that the fluid smells horrible. This is due to the tissue being killed by the necrotizing fasciitis. However, keep in mind that this rash and the blistering that goes with it may not always be in the area where the infection happened. If the infection spread throughout other parts of the body quickly enough, then it may appear there instead.

""

5. Discoloration, Horrible Smell, Peeling & Other Sites of Gangrene

Tissue death is the main way that necrotizing fasciitis does damage your body. Since the tissue is dying, it is marked by the smell of tissue death which is a very noticeable and recognizable smell. If you notice the smell around the affected area, then you can be sure the necrotizing fasciitis is the problem.

However, there will be other signs of gangrene as well such as peeling and the aforementioned blistering around the area they got infected. This is one of the later-stage symptoms, so you never want to allow flesh-eating bacteria to progress far. At the very first sign that there may be tissue death going on, which is before the smells and peeling start, then you need to be heading to the emergency room and getting emergency care.

""

6. Severe Reduction in Blood Pressure

In the latter stage of the infection, you may notice a severe drop in blood pressure. This is the very first stage of what could be called the end stages of the illness. If your blood pressure drops, then it may be too late for you to seek medical attention, but of course, you should do so right away anyway. It is important not to let yourself get to the stage if possible.

It is also important to you alert the people around you if you have the illness as to what symptoms to expect and when to call emergency services. Getting emergency care and antibiotics for this illness is absolutely vital in the earliest stage possible. You don’t want to let it progress to a drop in blood pressure and the other end-stage symptoms because you may not have a chance to get rid of the infection.

""

7. Shock due to Toxicity

Going into shock is another late-stage symptom of this illness. Going into shock means that a person has lethargy and is not very responsive. Someone who is in shock may fail various eye dilation tests and they may be barely responsive when you try to speak to them. Shock is what happens when the body starts to shut down completely and that is a very big worry.

You can tell when someone is in shock because their pupils will not respond to light in the same way that someone will when they are healthy and they may have cooler skin, a rapid heartbeat, increased blood pressure, and find it difficult to respond to questions. When someone is in shock, the best thing you can do is wrap them up in a blanket and contact emergency services right away.

""

8. Unconsciousness That Will Lead to Death

Finally, the body will drop off and unconsciousness and this will lead to death. This is the final stage of necrotizing fasciitis. This means that the bacteria have spread far enough throughout the body to begin shutting down organs and especially shutting down the brain.

Unfortunately, there is not a lot that medical professionals can do at this late stage. If the disease has ravaged the body and progressed so far that it is reached enough of the brain to cause unconsciousness, you may not get a second chance. That’s why It is absolutely vital that you do everything you can to prevent this infection from ever getting to that stage in the first place.

""

9. Nausea and Vomiting

Patients suffering from the effects of NF often experience symptoms of nausea and vomiting associated
with their condition. The bacteria causing the problem may start to interfere with the gastrointestinal
system. As a result, the affected individual starts to notice the onset of nausea symptoms.

Unless they receive treatment, the patient may start to vomit.
Nausea and vomiting are critical to
proper treatment. If the patient doesn’t replace the fluids they lose when vomiting; they run the risk of
experiencing dehydration.

Dehydration is a severe complication, affecting the mineral balance in the body. If left untreated, the
patient could go into shock and start experiencing seizures. Patients with severe cases of vomiting and
nausea require admission to the emergency room for immediate rehydration via intravenous therapy.

Provided that the patient receives the medical treatment they need in time, they should fully recover
from the effects of dehydration. However, leaving the patient with no treatment could result in death.

""

10. Infrequent Urination

Patients who experience an infection with NF bacteria may also notice other symptoms that they might
not attribute to their condition. Some patients with advanced infections may experience the onset of
urinary problems.

Oliguria” involves the decrease in urine output in the patient. If the patent produces less than 400-ml of
urine in 24 hours, they deal with the onset of oliguria. Some patients with NF may also develop “anuria,”
describing the absence of urine entirely.

Doctors are at a loss to explain the reasons why NF could possibly affect urine output. However, most
medical experts think there is a link between kidney function and NF infection, causing changes to
urinary output.

If you’re noticing any of the symptoms of NF occurring, and you begin to experience changes in urinary
output, seek medical attention immediately. Without medical attention, you have less than a 30%
the survival rate from the infection.

NF symptoms may occur suddenly or progressively over time. Understanding that you have an infection
and seeking medical help helps you avoid the nasty complications associated with this disease. Prompt
diagnosis is critical to your outcome with necrotizing fasciitis.

""

11. Fatigue

As the patient experiences the infection taking hold of their physiology, they notice the occurrence of
symptoms. Fever and muscle pain around the affected area are the most common symptoms that
appear in the first few hours after infection.

Headaches and stiff muscles and joints are also common as the body starts to mount the immune
response to fighting off the infection. However, as the body ramps up its defenses, it draws on your
energy reserves.

It takes a lot of energy for the immune system to fight NF bacteria, and in many cases, it’s a losing battle.
As a result, the infected individual begins to notice they start to feel fatigued. The fatigue symptoms
usually occur in the first few days after infection, and they are immediately noticeable.

You’ll wake up in the morning feeling tired, and you may also have a headache. Seek medical treatment
immediately, and don’t take a chance with your health. The fatality rate with NF is high, and you’re
playing with your life if you don’t seek medical treatment.

""

12. Dizziness

As patients experience the effects of infection with NF bacteria, they begin to notice changes to their
physiology. The fever and general feeling of unwellness are often the first signs of the condition. However, since these symptoms are widely common in many diseases, it’s challenging to identify if
you’re in trouble or if you just have a case of the flu.

However, if you recently experienced an injury and have flu-like symptoms combined with the other
symptoms on this list, it’s time to see the doctor. As the infection gets hold of the body, you’ll start to
notice changes in your blood pressure and heart rate.

It’s common for people with an infection to feel dizzy after they suddenly stand up from a chair or get
out of bed. As the body stands up, the changes in your blood pressure can catch your brain by surprise,
causing dizziness and loss of balance in the affected individual.

""

13. Necrotizing Fasciitis Risk Factors

As with all diseases, there are a set of risk factors making some people more predisposed to catching the
bacterial infection than others. If you fall into any of the following risk factors, experience a flesh wound,
and have any of the following symptoms, contact your doctor for a diagnosis.

People who are at most at risk of developing NF include the following groups.

 People with immunocompromised immune responses.
 People with cancer or
diabetes.
 People with auto-immune disorders.
 People with chronic heart or lung diseases.
 People who use steroids recreationally or medically.
 People with skin disorders or skin lesions.
 People who inject drugs intravenously.
 People who abuse alcohol.

People who are generally healthy and have strong immune systems typically brush off the infection or
have a much milder time with the disease. If you suspect you may be dealing with an NF infection, you’ll
have to visit the doctor whether you are in good health or not.

The doctor will administer antibiotics to kill the invading bacteria. Provided you treat it early and finish
the antibiotics course, you should have no problems recovering from the infection.

""

14. Preventing Necrotizing Fasciitis

Unfortunately, the reality is that there is next to no way to protect or prevent yourself from getting NF.
However, you can protect yourself from the effects of the disease-causing severe illness and
hospitalization. Obviously, the best choice for stopping any infection is to seek medical help.

However, people can do more to strengthen their immune system to help them manage the effects of
the illness and prevent it from becoming serious enough to admit them to the hospital. Getting enough

exercise, eating healthy, and maintaining better personal hygiene are all ways to reduce the impact of
NF infection on your body.

Be careful with exposing yourself to pathogens in certain situations. Gyms, wrestling rooms, and hot
tubs/ saunas are examples of public areas where
germs may thrive. Ensuring you take the correct health
precautions when using these shared public services lowers your risk of infection with necrotizing
fasciitis bacteria.
