The marigold is an annual or perennial plant with brightly colored flowers in hues of orange, yellow and red. Hailing from North America, the marigold – otherwise known as the calendula, is now grown around the world for uses in floral bouquets, as well as in the manufacture of essential oil.

Marigolds are part of the sunflower family, which explains their tendency to proliferate quickly and develop bright flowers. “Calendula officinalis,” is the most common variety found in the genus. However, all varieties possess some form of the healing potential that benefits human health.

There are almost 20-known species of marigold, of which many now thrive in the lands of Western Europe, the Mediterranean, and parts of Asia, where they are favorite pot plants around the home. The petals of the flowers are edible, with uses in soups and stews. The flowers, leaves, and stems of calendula also make a potent essential oil extraction with plenty of health advantages.

Here are eight healing properties of calendula.

1. Healing Wounds

Scrapes, cuts, and sores present issues for infection. Most of these injuries scab over and heal by themselves in a few days. However, severe wounds that require stitching or surgery to repair and clean the affected area may require a recovery period of four to six weeks.

Any wound may benefit from treatments that assist the healing of the skin and tissues. After disinfecting a cut, and receiving appropriate treatment such as a band-aid or stitches, the patient should be aware of best outpatient practices for home care.

Lotions provide an excellent way of keeping the skin hydrated and enriched with nutrients that accelerate the healing process. Studies show that calendula oil has promise in speeding up the recovery of the skin. The research indicates that calendula and aloe vera extract lotions increased episiotomy recovery.

Calendula oil will help relieve the symptoms of swelling, bruising, redness, and inflammation from the wound. For minor injuries that don’t require surgical intervention, try using calendula-infused lotion once every 8-hours for 5-days, and you should notice a significant improvement in your wound.

2. Acne Treatment

Acne is the most common skin disorder in the United States, affecting up to 50-million Americans. Acne typically starts when the individual hits puberty, and lasts throughout the adolescence into early adulthood. 85-percent of people between the ages of 12 to 24-years old have had to deal with at least minor acne outbreaks at some stage in this period.

Teenagers with acne may find it to be a social challenge and might become victims of emotional bullying at school from their peers.

Most people wouldn’t think that treating oily skin with another oil is a good idea. However, studies show that calendula oil may have an effect of treating and preventing acne vulgaris in petri dish samples.

We recommend you give calendula-infused lotions a try for helping the skin around the face, neck, and shoulders recover from the effects of an outbreak. The cream will help reduce scarring and help to prevent future outbreaks.

3. Eczema and Psoriasis Relief

Eczema and psoriasis are both disorders affecting the health of the skin. Psoriasis plaques appear anywhere on the body, but mainly on the scalp, forearms, as well as the folds in the joints and the knees. These plaques take on a scaly appearance and create symptoms of irritation and itching.

Eczema is a similar skin disorder that creates dry rashes on the affected individual, with small pustules of clear fluid that burst and dry up. The skin turns a reddish-pink color and flakes when it’s dry. Both of these skin disorders are incredibly frustrating to live with for any person suffering from either.

Doctors are still at a loss to explain the cause of eczema in patients, but some believe it may be an autoimmune disease when the immune system mistakenly attacks skin cells thinking they are invading pathogens.

Calendula oil-infused lotion, or essential oil extract diluted in a carrier – such as extra-virgin coconut oil, may help eczema and psoriasis sufferers heal their skin faster after an attack.

4. Soothe Diaper Rash

Anyone with a child that’s dealing with a bad case of diaper rash understands that babies know how to make their discomfort known. The crying doesn’t stop until they receive relief, and a concerned parent hates to hear their child moan in pain.

Calendula oil-infused lotions can help cool and calm the irritation from a nasty diaper rash. The active ingredients in the essential oils get to work in reducing inflammation and signs of redness in the skin associated with diaper rash.

Similarly, calendula-infused lotions can also help reduce the effects of a rash in adults and adolescents as well. Rub the cream into the affected area every eight hours to allow for maximum absorption of the active polyphenols in the lotion to penetrate the skin.

Cancer patients are at risk of developing contact dermatitis from radiation therapy. Using calendula-infused skin lotions may also help protect the skin from contact dermatitis infection.

5. Hydrate Dry Skin

Do you live in an arid climate? Does your skin dry out and crack easily? Using a calendula-infused body lotion on your skin every day keeps it hydrated. As the largest organ of the human body, the skin lets us known how it’s feeling by its appearance. Dry, irritated skin makes life uncomfortable with itching symptoms, and other problems such as dandruff.

Keeping the skin hydrated isn’t as challenging as you thin, but it requires dedication to a daily skin moisturizing routine. Should you be suffering from dry, irritated skin, you’ll gain relief after the first use of the cream. However, with regular application to your skin, you’ll notice a dramatic improvement in its health. Eventually, your skin develops a glow that will draw attention.

Use calendula-infused facial lotions to hydrate your face as well. The polyphenols in the calendar extract kill off free radicals responsible for the signs of aging.

6. Prevent Premature Aging

Exposure to the sun’s strong rays causes sunburn. Inflammation and swelling may cause symptoms of pain and heat emanating from the skin. Depending on the severity of the sunburn, the burn may heal by itself in a few days. After recovering from the sunburn, we may shed its top layer affected, and we start to peel as a result.

Applying calendula oil-infused body lotion to the affected areas may help the skin recover faster from the sunburn – Micronutrients and antioxidant polyphenols found in the cream help to reduce the inflammation and accelerate the healing process.

While a sunburn on the body is a painful condition to live with, a sunburn on the face can be far more severe in its effects. After the peeling and burn subside, the excess free radical production will lead to the development of fine lines and wrinkles.

Using creams fortified with calendula essential oil, allows you to remove the free radicals from the bloodstream and skin before they get a chance to do any significant oxidative damage.

7. Keep Hair Healthy

Anyone living with dandruff understands the embarrassment and frustration of dealing with this scalp disorder. Going into a boardroom meeting with the CEO requires you looking your best, and it’s not attractive when your navy blue suit jackets covered in dandruff.

You can keep your scalp hydrated and healthy by using a shampoo infused with calendula essential oil. Take your favorite shampoo brand and add a tablespoon of calendula essential oil to the bottle. Shake the bottle well, and supercharge your shampoo formula with the hydrating effects of the polyphenols, and nutrients found in the essential oil.

Work the shampoo into your scalp and leave it there for a few minutes before rinsing it out. If you only have to be in the office in a few hours, or it’s the weekend, try rubbing some moisturizing formula with calendula oil into your scalp and leave it to dry. Repeat this treatment three to four time a week to get rid of dandruff.

8. Improves Digestive Health

If you’re dealing with digestive disorders such as celiac disease and IBD or IBS, then calendula may offer you some relief from your symptoms of bloating, gas, and distention. Inflammatory bowel disorders occur due to inflammation of the intestinal wall. As this permeable barrier expands, toxins leak out through the gaps in the wall, where they enter the bloodstream and travel to other regions of the body.

This spread of systemic inflammation causes flare-ups in other conditions such as gout and arthritis, and well as outbreaks of skin disorders like eczema. Drinking calendula tea with your meals helps to reduce digestive inflammation from meals, enhancing biome health while ensuring that you obtain more nutrition from your food.

Steep the tea in hot water for 5-minutes before your meal to allow the tea to absorb all of the polyphenols from the calendula. After boiling the kettle, we recommend you wait a few minutes to let the water cool slightly before pouring. Boiling water may damage the polyphenols in the tea, preventing their absorption.
