Noonan Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that you might not have heard of before but is actually more common than you might have thought. Statistics say that it occurs in as much as 1 in every 100 cases, and 1 in every 2, 000 in cases with more severe symptoms.

Symptoms of the condition can include heart defects, problems with the digestive system, issues with the lymph nodes and easy bruising.

Apart from the actual symptoms of the condition itself, there can be a couple of different health conditions that are associated with NS. This means that anyone who is diagnosed with the condition will automatically be considered at a higher risk of developing some of the health conditions that are mentioned on this list, and might develop some of these conditions as a result of Noonan Syndrome.

Here are 8 common conditions that are associated with Noonan Syndrome.

1. Leukemia

Leukemia is a common health condition that can sometimes be associated with a diagnosis of Noonan Syndrome. This doesn’t mean that every case of NS will be prone to develop it, but it does mean that the two conditions go hand-in-hand and that someone who has NS will likely be at a much higher risk of developing it during their lifetime.

The condition is known as a type of blood cancer, and it’s usually more prevalent in children than it is in adults, but can sometimes occur in both cases; signs of leukemia can include early signs of easier bruising and general signs of a lowered immune system.

If any signs of ill health or leukemia is suspected, then a doctor’s appointment should be your next course of action even without a diagnosis of Noonan Syndrome; the good news is that the condition can be managed with the proper treatment.

2. Cryptorchidism

A condition known as cryptorchidism is commonly associated with a diagnosis of NS, and occurs in a great deal of males who have been born with the condition; the more common name for the term is undescended testicles – and this is usually noticed around early childhood or puberty when the testicles never descend down from the abdomen as they are supposed to during normal childhood development.

This can sometimes warrant a doctor’s appointment, and if the testicles do not descend if given time and hormonal treatment, surgery might be necessary to prevent any pain and discomfort later on in life.

The condition isn’t just associated with cases of Noonan Syndrome, and might sometimes occur on its own without any other symptoms of NS being present, and there are several other potential conditions that can cause it in this case, including issues with hormonal development or diet that’s easy to correct.

3. Connective Tissue Disorders

Connective tissue disorders can oftentimes be diagnosed along with Noonan Syndrome, and these are considered to be entirely separate conditions on their own that sometimes occur even without a diagnosis of NS even though they frequently occur together.

Connective tissue disorders refers to an entire group of different disorders that are characterized by defects to the body’s connective tissue (including collagen) which helps to keep things like the skin and tissue of the body together; these disorders can include conditions such as Marfan Syndrome and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, which might be diagnosed either separately on their own or occur with a diagnosis of NS.

These conditions require lifelong treatment and management, especially of any heart conditions that are likely to arise as a complication of a connective tissue disorder. Among other treatments, beta-blockers are a common treatment to control an irregular heart rate that might arise from connective tissue disorders.

4. Keloiding

Keloid scarring is a common condition associated with Noonan Syndrome, and this may often go hand-in-hand with a connective tissue disorder that’s prone to cause this effect while also affecting the rest of the skin; keloid scarring refers to improper scarring of the body where the scars become “raised” while they heal instead of flattened – and while this doesn’t lead to a lot of discomfort, there are times where keloid scarring might occur within the body after surgery.

Because of the way that the skin reacts due to keloid scarring, it’s important to let a surgeon know if this is suspected before any type of surgery (or treatment that directly affects the skin) is to take place.

Other than this, minor keloid scarring on the outside of the body will rarely if ever present with any major complications except for being a little more sensitive to sunlight than normal skin.

5. Lymphedema

Lymphedema is a common symptom that’s seen in a lot of NS cases; while lymphedema is the most common term for the disorder, it’s better described by the unnatural and repetitive swelling of the lymph nodes, which are the nodes that run along the neck and through to under the shoulders; the line of lymph nodes continues along the same line throughout the body, and it’s likely that any lymphedema-swelling will occur directly on this line of nodes.

Lymphedema is usually easy to treat with adaptations to a healthy diet combined with the right prescribed medication for the condition, and many people have found that heat and cold can bring some relief to the swelling in extreme cases that would normally have caused a considerable amount of pain and discomfort.

Because of the higher risk of developing certain types of cancers, signs of lymphedema should always warrant a doctor’s appointment.

6. Seizures

Seizures can sometimes commonly be associated with Noonan Syndrome, and commonly lifelong monitoring is needed to ensure that seizures don’t develop – and an immediate doctor’s appointment should be made if the first symptoms of seizures are spotted. Sometimes this can occur as part of epilepsy, a larger condition characterized by seizures, but sometimes these can also happen to occur on their own.

Medication is the first treatment recommended for chronic seizures, and if several types of cycled medication have been unsuccessful, then following the keto diet has shown some success in treating chronic seizures when done with the help of a qualified and registered medical professional.

Seizures and always the “grand mal” form that most people imagine, and can also sometimes take the form of micro-seizures that only look as though the person appears a little “spaced out” for a while with moderate confusion that occurs for a period afterward.

7. Hypermobility

Hypermobility is a common symptom that can be seen in many Noonan Syndrome cases, but isn’t always the case with all diagnosed cases – and might not even appear at all as a symptom in some. Hypermobility refers to the over-flexibility of the joints, and what people used to wrongly refer to being “double-jointed” – today we know that it’s impossible for people to be double-jointed at all, and today it’s really only because of hypermobility.

This can sometimes be accompanied by a connective tissue disorder such as Marfan Syndrome which would also have hypermobility as a symptom, but this isn’t always the case and it might also occur as a condition on its own.

People diagnosed with hypermobility are at an increased risk of sprains, strains and other joint issues like arthritis – lifelong care should be taken to best manage the condition with a low rate of potential injury.

8. Bruising

Noonan Syndrome is a genetic disorder that can commonly affect the blood and skin, and this can occur in a variety of ways in cases of people who have been diagnosed with NS; in some cases, it can manifest with associated conditions like leukemia (a cancer of the blood), or it might manifest in other ways that affect the skin or circulatory system. This can include a connective tissue disorder diagnosed alongside NS, hypermobility that occurs with NS is also commonly seen.

Those aren’t the only ways in which this can manifest, and easier bruising (as well as slower and longer healing of the associated bruises) are common – care should be taken to avoid thinning the blood with alcohol or medication, as other bleeding issues can arise.

Any contact where bruising can occur, such as sports, is never recommended in a case of NS due to the increased bruising risk.
