When it comes to the body many people do not actually realize how tough the hip joint really is. In fact, most people do not even realize how much they use their hips until there is pain that is radiating from it. The hip joint was designed to withstand repeated motions as well as a good amount of wear and tear.

The hip joint is the largest ball and socket joint of the body and fits perfectly together in order to allow fluid movement. When you are using the hip there is a cushion that helps to protect the bones. While the hip is quite durable, it is not indestructible. In fact, there are many ways that the hip may become damaged. Simply aging is one of the main causes of pain in the hips. Here are 8 of the more common reasons that a person may experience hip pain and bursitis in the hip.

1. Repetitive Motions

Bursitis is caused when the bursae become inflamed. One of the reasons that the bursa in the hip may become inflamed is because they have simply overused the hip joint. This may be from a long walk or a run. Every time we put pressure on our hip joints it can cause mini traumas to occur.

These mini traumas can be just as damaging as one big trauma. A person who works out frequently and or is on their feet for work all day may experience hip bursitis. Being on a concrete floor all day can cause trauma to the hips and other joints in the legs.

The continuous stress on the legs can cause the bursa to become inflamed. This inflammation can cause a person to experience pain. Rest can be the best option when it comes to healing issues with the hip and alleviating the pain that you are experiencing.

""

2. Injury and Trauma

A common cause for hip bursitis is a trauma or injury to the hip or pelvic area. Hitting the hip on a sharp surface or taking a fall and landing on your hip can cause the bursa to fill with blood.

It can also cause the lining of the bursa to become inflamed. The blood will be reabsorbed into the body, but the inflammation in the lining can remain for a long time. This inflammation can cause the symptoms of bursitis. When this happens it is referred to as traumatic bursitis.

If you have injured your hip in some way either through hitting it on a hard surface or from a fall, it is a good idea to ice the area right away. Applying ice to the area can help to reduce the swelling that is caused by the injury and can also reduce the inflammation. Ice the area for fifteen minutes at a time every two hours after an injury has occured.

3. Age

Getting older is something that we cannot do anything about. After all, aging is just simply a part of life. Unfortunately, as we age our bodies begin to deteriorate. This can cause many types of health issues including the development of hip bursitis. A person of any age can be affected by hip bursitis, especially those who work in an industry that requires overwork of the hips and leg muscles.

However, as a person gets older their risk of developing hip bursitis becomes much higher. This is simply because the joints and muscles in the body begin to wear down over time. The cushion that helps the joints move can become thinner with time and this can cause pain in the joints.

Taking proper care of the joints when you are younger can help to reduce the risk of developing bursitis as you age. Anti-inflammatory medications can help reduce some of the pain caused by hip bursitis.

""

4. Posture

Remember when you were younger and your parents and grandparents stressed the importance of good posture. It turns out that they were right to do this. Poor posture is one of the causes of hip bursitis as well as many other joint related issues.

A person who does not stand up straight puts extra pressure on the hips. This extra pressure requires the hips to work even harder. When the hips have to work harder, it makes it more likely that the bursa will become inflamed.

This inflammation can cause a person to experience pain in the hips, pelvic area, lower back, and even down the legs. One of the ways to reduce the risk of developing hip bursitis is to make sure that you are doing whatever you can to take pressure off of your hips whenever you can. Sitting and standing up straight can help to alleviate this pressure.

5. Muscle Weakness

When it comes to hip bursitis, a low amount of muscle coordination or muscle weakness can cause it to develop. People who do not get enough exercise or who spend a lot of time sitting can experience muscle weakness. Muscle weakness develops when the muscles are not being worked enough.

If we do not do anything to strengthen the muscles they are going to become weak with time. This can increase the risk of developing joint issues such as bursitis. When the muscles that surround the hip are weakened, it leaves the hip more prone to becomeing injured. A slight bump or a fall can cause the area to become inflamed.

This inflammation can cause a person to experience the pain and other symptoms that are associated with hip bursitis. Exercising can improve muscle strength and reduce the risk of hip bursitis developing. Proper exercise is important for keeping the body healthy.

6. Bone Spurs

Bone spurs are growths that may form on any normal bone. The growth will most often be smooth and may cause issues or it may not. However, depending on where the bone spur develops, it may cause wear and tear on the soft tissues or the bones as the bone spur continuously rubs up against the area.

The hip is a common area for a bone spur to develop. The shoulder is another common spot for these growths to form. The hip is very complex as the ball and joint socket allow it to move in different directions. Over time, the ligaments, tendons, bones, and musclest that make up the hip joint can wear against each other.

Bone spurs may form on any area of the hip bone. Depending on where they are formed these bone spurs may increase the wear and tear on the joint and can cause the bursa to become inflamed.

""

7. Calcium Deposits

The tendons are what connect the muscles to the bones. At times, calcium can build up in this area and can cause a condition referred to as calcific tendonitis. These deposits have the consistency of toothpaste and they may spread out around the tendons or develop in a single spot.

It is not known exactly what causes calcium deposits to develop. However, it is more common for women to develop them than men. Typically, these occur in people over the age of thirty. There is also a link between calcium deposits developing in the tendons and thyroid disorders and diabetes.

Most of the time these calcium will not cause any type of issues. However, if the deposits become larger or if they become inflamed, they can cause pain. Calcium deposits most often will affect the hip or pelvic area and can cause the bursa to become inflamed.

8. Infections and Autoimmune Diseases

An infection in any part of the body can cause inflammation to occur. This inflammation can cause all sorts of health issues, including hip bursitis. Common autoimmune diseases such as gout, rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid disease, and psoriasis are all diseases that can cause hip bursitis as well.

Any disease that causes any type of inflammation can cause a person to develop bursitis in the hip as well as in the other joints of the body. If you suffer from one of these types of diseases or if you are suffering from any type of infection, the risk for developing hip bursitis is increased.

Proper treatment for these types of ailments is important for your health overall. Making sure that you are properly seeking treatment for these other ailments can help reduce the risk of developing bursitis. A medical professional will be able to help you determine the best course of treatment for your health issues.

""

9. Poor Movement Patterns

Moving in the incorrect manner can cause a host of issues and imbalances, and especially if you engage in a lot of sports. Leaning too much to one side, or compensating for a lack of mobility for instance can place strain in areas where it should not be, and this can in turn lead to further issues over time.

For instance, if
you squat in the gym a lot, then you may find that this can cause issues
including bursitis of the hips. For instance, if you have a lack of hip
mobility or even a lack of ankle mobility, then you may be forced to lean more
forward or backward, thereby shifting the angle of the weight away from the
center of gravity. That in turn can place that part of the body under a lot of
force that it would not normally be placed under and this can eventually cause
irritation and inflammation of the bursae in the hip.

Unfortunately, most
of us adopt very poor movement patterns at least in part due to our lifestyles.
Spending large amounts of time sat a desk for instance can cause us to hunch
over (kyphosis) and can likewise shorten and tighten the hip flexors while
weakening the extensors.

This is why it’s a
good idea to try and correct your lack of mobility before you begin lifting
heavy weights, or engage in athletic pursuits.

""

10. Sitting

We’ve just discovered that sitting for long periods in an office can actually be responsible for shortening and weakening of specific muscle groups, which may in turn cause wide-spread issues that lead to pain and bursitis.

But what’s more is that sitting can also directly cause bursitis. Specifically, it causes a type of bursitis called Ischial bursitis, which is pain located in the upper buttock area or lower back. You may feel this most when walking uphill or when climbing stairs. This is sometimes referred to as weavers bottom or tailors bottom. If you suffer from this form of bursitis, then getting an ergonomic seat or cushion may help to reduce it in future.

""

11. Impact Sports

Bursitis is a
condition that affects the bursae – the fluid filled sacs between the bones. These
have the job of providing a cushion that helps to lubricate movement and to
absorb impact.

While this works well much of the time, the sacs can occasionally become inflamed due to the constant slamming between bones and joints.

There are many
different things you can do to reduce this impact and to help protect the
joints. One tip is to wear the right footwear, which should be sufficiently
padded to help take some of the brunt.

But again, the
correct movement patterns are also crucial. When landing from a jump for
instance, the leg is designed to act like a spring with three hinges each
compressing while the majority of the weight from the upper body is located
directly over the center of gravity. Running on the balls of the foot rather
than the heels for instance has recently been demonstrated to reduce impact and
place significantly less strain on the body.

""

12. Gout

Gout can cause the appearance of crystals in the joints that cause significant pain and loss of mobility. In the case of bursitis, this of course is felt prominently in the hips.

Gout is a form of
arthritis and is in fact technically known as ‘gouty arthritis’. While there
are many potential causes for gout, it is linked with vitamin D along with blood
sugar levels. Good general advice then is to try and get plenty of sunlight,
which will also help to strengthen the bones seeing as vitamin D also helps the
body to absorb and use calcium and magnesium.

""

13. Sprains

Sprains are tears that affect the ligaments. Ligaments are the connective tissue found between bone, as opposed to tendon which connects bone to muscle. A sprain can occur if you suddenly move a joint out of its usual range of motion, or if it is suddenly tugged or pulled. Sprains can be very painful and should require rest and management of pain and swelling.

Sprains are not the
same thing as bursitis but can cause bursitis due to the generalized swelling,
as well as the trauma itself.

""

14. Torn Muscle

A muscle tear is similar to a sprain but of course affects the muscle itself rather than the ligaments. During normal exercise we usually encounter small tears in the muscle fiber called ‘microtears’. In a torn muscle however, the tear is far more dramatic and pronounced, leading to severe pain and loss of movement. You may even be able to physically feel the indentation in the muscle where the fibers have been ruptured.

The best treatment
for torn muscle or sprain is the RICE approach. This stands for Rest Ice
Compression Elevation. Take time out and keep the hip above the heart where
possible so that it will drain the area of fluids. Apply a cool pack to reduce
swelling and numb the pain.
