De Quervain Tenosynovitis is commonly caused by overusing the wrists. Any type of repetitive movement with the wrists can over time cause de Quervain tenosynovitis. It can affect the hand and thumb as well.

A person doesn’t have to be physically active to become affected by the condition. If a person has been putting a lot of stress on the wrists for a long period of time, their sheaths covering the tendons are putting a lot of pressure on the nerves, which is causing the person to have pain in the first place.

In order to get to the root of the problem of why de Quervain tenosynovitis is present is to figure out what are some of the main causes are. There are eight common causes of de Quervain tenosynovitis that a person should check for. Every person may not fit into the same category when it comes to de Quervain tenosynovitis.

1. Lifting heavy grocery bags by their handles can cause de Quervain tenosynovitis because strain is put on the wrists.

By carrying heavy grocery bags on a regular basis, the sheaths are putting pressure on the tendons, which is going to cause pain and swelling. This is even worse for a person who walks from the grocery store with heavy bags. They are likely in pain and ignore it because he or she has no other way to get to and from the grocery store.

Also, not every grocery store has people on hand who can put a person’s groceries in his or her car. To make it easier on the wrists, a person should not use the handles at all. Just tote the bags against the body, almost like holding a child. It might be a good idea to use brown paper bags, so it’ll be easier to carry and on the wrists.

""

2. Women are common to have de Quervain tenosynovitis

Because they do a lot of things that require heavy lifting, especially around the house, including carrying a heavy bucket filled with water when mopping the floor or handling a child. It has been shown that women are eight to 10 times more likely to get de Quervain tenosynovitis than men. Also, more women work in clerical positions, which require them to have their wrists in awkward positions at the keyboard.

A lot of women who work in clerical positions, don’t position their hands and wrists in the right position. In fact, some of them don’t even have keyboarding skills. They type of their thumbs but are still fast when it comes to completing their work. If they have been working like this for years, they more than likely have de Quervain tenosynovitis in their wrists, if not thumbs as well.

""

3. Being 40 and over is a common cause for having de Quervain tenosynovitis because the joints are weaker.

It’s likely that an older person has done a lot of things to his or her body in the past and as they have aged, it’s caught up with them. For instance, a person who always lifted heavy boxes on the job more than likely has problems with their wrists. They may wear a wrist band in prevent any pain. When they take the wrist band off, the pain comes back.

The sheaths are covering the tendon or tendons making the wrists have pain. Arthritis can form in the wrists at an older age and cause de Quervain tenosynovitis. The joints have become weak that it causes the hands and wrists to swell and be in constant pain. By having the condition, it can become difficult for an older person to complete daily tasks.

4. Repetitive movements on a daily basis

Are common causes of de Quervain tenosynovitis, especially in women who have to lift up a child or baby and put him or her in a car seat. Some women even carry around heavy car seats, which by itself is heavy. At times, women have to repeatedly pick a child or baby up and then put him or her down. This repeated wrist motion is a cause for de Quervain teonosynovitis.

Damage to the tendons in the wrists is going to happen. The same thing can happen to someone who has a hobby that they practice on a daily basis, such as golfing. With golfing, the hands and wrists are moved in a quick motion and it has to be done repeatedly. Some golfers may feel that if they wear wrist braces, it will prevent any pain. That’s not the case because it is still going to be there if the golfer continues to use the same wrist and hand motions.

5. Pregnancy can cause a woman to have de Quervain tenosynovitis because of her hormones.

Different parts of the body on a pregnant woman can become swollen and inflamed and become difficult for her to do things on her own. It is not caused by something she has done. De Quervain’s tenosynovitis goes away once she starts breastfeeding. In a pregnant woman, her doctor will prescribe the right treatment for her that won’t affect her unborn baby.

Some treatments that the doctor may prescribe are strengthening exercises for wrists and ice therapy. Since it’s caused by being pregnant, there may not be any long-term treatments needed once the baby is born. Even if the condition is still around once the baby is born, treatment may be short-term. The main reason why a woman may continue having de Quervain tenosynovitis is if she starts lifting heavy things, such as a car seat and the baby on a regular basis.

""

6. Injured wrist causes de Quervain tenosynovitis because the person continues to do his or her daily tasks or hobby.

For instance, a basketball player may play on an injured wrist without letting the coach know. The pain is there, but the basketball player will play through the pain. Over time, de Quervain tenosynovitis sets in. A person at work will continue to work even though his or her wrist is injured. The reason for this is because a person has to work to pay the bills. If the person doesn’t work, the bills won’t get paid.

That’s the main reason why de Quervain tenosynovitis develops because of this scenario. When the wrist is injured, scar tissue makes it difficult for the tendons to move. Pushing through an injury to the wrists will make it difficult to heal the injury even if a person is going through therapy and taking over-the-counter medications.

""

7. Arthritis is a common cause for someone to develop de Quervain tenosynovitis because the tendons are weak already.

The tendons in the wrists have slowly torn away and caused pain. The weak tendons can cause the hands and wrists to become swollen. People with arthritis tend to work around their condition and can make the pain even worse. Arthritis can develop in a person over time. Even someone at a young age can develop the condition. Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory type of arthritis that can cause de Quervain tenosynovitis.

With arthritis, weak tendons make it difficult for someone to complete their daily tasks. Older adults who have arthritis and golf can develop de Quervain tenosynovitis because of the repetitive motion of the wrists in addition to having arthritis. In order to get relief from the condition, it’s best to seek treatment from a doctor who may prescribe physical therapy to get relief from both conditions.

""

8. Jobs and hobbies can cause de Quervain tenosynovitis because both require repetitive movements of the hands and wrists.

When it comes to the job, most jobs require repetitive movements of the hands and wrists because a person has to bend their wrists over and over again. Such jobs include working in a warehouse or stocking in a retail store. In a warehouse and as a stocker, heavy lifting is required to load and unload merchandise. Certain hobbies require repetitive motion of the hands and wrists, such as strength training and knitting.

In knitting, the wrists are bent for a long period of time. For strength training, heavy lifting is required. Men for instance, tend to lift the heaviest weights in the gym. As personal trainers like to call people who lift incorrectly as having spaghetti wrists, it can damage the tendons. Most people who lift don’t have a personal trainer, so when they train harder, they perform moves incorrectly.
