Nephrotic syndrome is a condition of the kidneys, which causes too much protein to be produced in the urine. When this happens, the ankles and feet will become swollen and weight gain will occur. Once a person is diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome, the primary care doctor or nephrologist will prescribe the person blood pressure medication and water pills.

A lot of the times with nephrotic syndrome there is an underlying condition that has to be treated first. Even if the underlying condition is treated first, the blood pressure medication and water pills can treat nephrotic syndrome as well.

With this condition, it can last for years or a person’s entire lifetime. That’s why it’s important that a person maintains a proper diet with nephrotic syndrome. The same foods a person was eating in the past have to be eliminated from his or her diet. The doctor may suggest a low sodium diet.

1. Frozen dinners and entrees

It should be avoided with nephrotic syndrome because it’s nothing but processed foods that are loaded with sodium. Frozen meals and entrees are small portions sized and dieters may think they’re good to eat because it can prevent them from overeating. That isn’t the case. In fact, it is the opposite.

Since the portion sizes are small and the meals are loaded with sugar and sodium, it will cause dieters to eat more. It would be better if a person prepared and cook their own meals because a person can put a limit on how much sodium is in the food, such as salt.

Plus, by preparing and cooking a meal, a person can save money because frozen dinners and entrees are expensive. Processed foods are made in a factory and seasonings that are on the meal itself may not be good for someone with nephrotic syndrome.

""

2. Canned meats

Are another type of food that should be avoided when dealing with nephrotic syndrome because they are loaded with fat and high in sodium. They may be convenient, especially when a person is running low on time and need a quick snack. They are cheap but are bad for someone with nephrotic syndrome.

Since canned meats are high in sodium, they will have a negative effect on a person’s body. With nephrotic syndrome, a person is likely to gain weight, retain water, and sodium. The kidneys are already damaged, so eating canned meats may cause more damage. That’s extra waste and water that glomeruli can’t do anything with.

It’ll just keep on piling up in the blood, which will raise the blood pressure and hurt the kidneys. If a person with nephrotic syndrome wants any meat, it’s best to stick with lean meats, such as poultry, shellfish, and fish.

""

3. Salted snacks, such as potato chips, nuts, and popcorn should be avoided with nephrotic syndrome.

They are high in trans and saturated fats and sodium. They taste good, but consuming them can be hazardous for someone with nephrotic syndrome. With the condition, salt and water are accumulated in the body. If it has nowhere to go, it will cause the eyes, ankles, and feet to swell. It the feet and ankles swell up too bad it can cause a person to be unable to wear footwear.

Their blood pressure will rise and a person will have to take blood pressure medications to get their blood pressure back to where it needs to be. A person will also gain weight all over the body. Once the salty snacks are eliminated, a person will start to lose weight and their nephrotic syndrome can be managed better. If a person really wants a snack, choose unsalted popcorn, nuts, and potato chips.

4. Processed cheese is a cheap food that should be avoided with nephrotic syndrome.

Processed cheeses are loaded with salt, sugar, and saturated vegetable oils that are harmful to someone with nephrotic syndrome. In fact, some people can become allergic to processed cheeses if he or she has eaten it for years because of all the harmful stuff that is in it. Someone with nephrotic syndrome that eats a lot of processed cheese are going to clog their arteries and make it difficult for their kidneys to function because of all of the salt and oils in it.

If a person wants cheese, they should consider eating cottage cheese or tofu as a substitute. They may not taste good in the beginning, but they’re a healthier option for someone with nephrotic syndrome. There are recipes that have cottage cheese and tofu in them that will make the experience of eating it a lot better.

""

5. High-sodium meats, such as hotdogs, bacon, sausage, ham, and bologna should be avoided with the condition.

All of these types of meats are loaded with fats and salt. A lot of people consume these types of meats on a daily basis because they are not only convenient but taste good. In fact, high-sodium meats are served everywhere, including at fairs. At fairs, these meats are cooked in extra fat and loaded with salt.

When eating high-sodium meats they are usually paired with white bread. White bread is loaded with sodium. Hotdogs are eaten with high sodium condiments, such as pickles. Pickles are pickled vegetables, which are loaded with high-sodium seasonings. By eating these high-sodium meats on a regular basis will raise the blood pressure and cholesterol. With nephrotic syndrome, cholesterol and blood pressure should be maintained. By not maintaining it, a setback can occur. Complications can occur with nephrotic syndrome.

""

6. Pickled vegetables

Should be avoided when dealing with nephrotic syndrome because they are loaded with high-sodium seasonings. Pickled vegetables include cucumbers, carrots, and summer squash. Even though someone with nephrotic syndrome can consume vinegar, other high-sodium seasonings have to be added to make it taste good, such as salt.

Eating a lot of pickled vegetables will cause the kidneys to retain extra salt and water and cause headaches, a rise in blood pressure, and kidney disease. Certain parts of the body will become swollen and make it difficult to do normal tasks.

For instance, if the ankles become swollen, it can cause someone with nephrotic syndrome to be unable to stand up for too long because of their ankles. It is embarrassing to see someone with swollen ankles and feet because the person looks uncomfortable. They may struggle to get out of bed in the morning because when someone has swollen ankles and feet, there has to be pain involved.

""

7. Salted bread is another food that should be avoided with nephrotic syndrome.

Salted bread is served with certain dishes. Some people even serve salted bread when they have guests over as a welcome snack, but it should be avoided. If it’s being served to guests, it can be dangerous because a person may not know someone has nephrotic syndrome if they just met him or her. It’s best to serve fruit or unsalted nuts as a snack. Salted bread can be loaded not only with salt, but fat and sugar as well.

The more salt in the body of a person with nephrotic syndrome, the worse their condition will be. It will be more difficult for them to get rid of extra water and waste in the body because their glomeruli are already damaged. Water pills and high blood pressure medication is the only solution to managing nephrotic syndrome in addition to a low sodium diet.

""

8. High-sodium condiments and seasonings should be avoided with the condition.

Some high-sodium condiments and seasonings include olives, bouillon cubes, pickles, Worcestershire, and soy sauce. When cooking at home, it’s best to choose a low to no sodium seasoning to add flavor to meals. It may be difficult to eat out at a restaurant because cooks usually use high-sodium seasonings in order to make the food taste good. They may have a diet menu, but there is no guarantee that the seasonings used are low in sodium.

A person with nephrotic syndrome may have to pass on eating out. When it comes to condiments, ketchup and vinegar can be eaten. For instance, if a person cooks some fish at home, they can put some vinegar over it without having any side effects. Butter and margarine can be spread over foods as well and it won’t be harmful to a person with nephrotic syndrome.
