Tenosynovitis is a painful condition that affects the wrists, feet, and hands. It affects a little over 200,000 people in the US a year alone. The reason for the pain is when there is inflammation of the tendon sheath, the muscle that connects to the bone starts to become painful.

Tenosynovitis is a treatable condition. In fact, it can be healed within a few days to weeks. If the condition isn’t too severe, it may be able to be treated with self-care methods, such as using an ice pack and taking Aleve or Advil. The common cause for tenosynovitis is repetitive movements, an infection, and injury.

When it comes to tenosynovitis, there are eight conditions are a result of this condition. Some conditions may be worse than others, but these are a few to look out for just in case of tenosynovitis suddenly pops up. Even if tenosynovitis is not too severe, it’s best to get treatment as soon as possible.

1. Difficulty moving a joint is a condition that can result in tenosynovitis.

When it’s difficult to move a joint, there is pain that is followed. It’s even worse if the pain is in both hands, feet, or wrists. That would cause someone to be unable to complete daily tasks. The inability to move came from overusing the joints when the pain first started. If the person decided to stop and seek treatment before tenosynovitis set it, he or she would still be able to move their joints.

Since it’s so difficult to move the joints, if someone was running daily through the pain, after a while the pain might catch the person when he or she is running and cause him or her to be unable to move at all. The pain in tenosynovitis is severe that it can stop a person in their tracks. Once the slightest pain is felt, it’s best to seek treatment or practice some self-care methods at home.

""

2. The swelling of the joints is another condition that can result in tenosynovitis.

The swelling comes from working on the injury. The longer someone works on an injury, the swelling gets bigger. For example, a stock clerk who lifts heavy boxes every day could have swollen hands, feet, and wrists, but may cover it up because he or she may be afraid that if anything is said, their job will be at stake.

So, the person will continue to work even though the affected area is continued to be swollen. When an infected area is swollen, a lot of the times there is a pain as well, especially when tenosynovitis is present. The swelling may go down just a bit when the person is at rest, but as soon as the joint is moved again, it goes back up. Icing the affected area will help with the swelling, but only a doctor can diagnose tenosynovitis.

""

3. Tenderness of the joints is a condition to look out for when tenosynovitis is present.

Most of the time when the joints are tender, there is pain and swelling as well. Whenever the affected area is touched, it causes pain. If the tenderness is on the foot area, it could prevent the person from being able to walk.

Crutches or a wheelchair may be the only option with tenosynovitis. A lot of the times joint tenderness is caused by arthritis. The tendons are weak and tenosynovitis has set in. Over-the-counter medication, such as Ibuprofen can relieve some of the joint tenderness.

Using topical analgesics are good, but have to be applied often to get any relief. With topical analgesics, the joints have to be rubbed and if the area is tender, it may become uncomfortable. Another option is to wear a brace over the affected area until tenosynovitis goes away.

""

4. Inflammation along the length of the tendon can cause tenosynovitis because the affected area is so irritated.

Tenosynovitis has affected the area to the point where immediate treatment is needed. When the affected area is inflamed, there is usually pain involved. The person has overused the wrist, hands, or feet that inflammation asset in. Inflammation may be so bad that if the person tries to continue to do anything in the affected area, it will be painful.

With inflammation, icing the area is recommended, but seeking a medical professional is a person’s best treatment. When icing the affected area, it needs to be propped up on a pillow. The medical professional may prescribe steroid injections to be given short-term to relieve the pain and inflammation. Tenosynovitis shouldn’t be played with. If a person suspects he or she has the condition and it’s inflamed, seeking help right away is important.

""

5. Joint pain is common in tenosynovitis. The tendon sheath is putting pressure on the muscle and bone that is causing tenosynovitis.

The pain can range from mild to severe and it comes on slowly or suddenly. Even if the pain comes on suddenly, some people don’t pay any attention to it and continue doing what they have to do until it becomes unbearable.

The pain is usually felt whenever the joint is used, such as the wrist, hands, or feet. When the particular joint is at rest, no pain is felt. In order to get some relief, it’s a good idea to not put any pressure on the affected area and let the tenosynovitis heal. It could possibly go away on its own, but as long as the affected area is being used, the pain is going to stay and difficult to heal once treatment is sought.

""

6. Straining is a condition that can result in tenosynovitis.

Most people strain and don’t even realize it because it’s something that is done on a daily basis. Some people strain when they are carrying grocery bags or a child. They are putting a strain on their wrists for instance and causing pressure on their tendons, which causes pain. When women carry grocery bags, they normally use the handles.

The handles cause the wrists to turn in and by doing this often, tenosynovitis sets in. Straining can cause the tendons to slowly tear because the tendons have become weak over the years. As stated before, tenosynovitis can occur suddenly or slowly.

Tenosynovitis can occur when a person lifts heavyweights. They may have improper form and their wrists, hands, and feet develop tenosynovitis. Heavy lifters feel it’s normal to have pain, so they’ll continue to lift even when it becomes unbearable.

""

7. Infection can result in tenosynovitis because the joints usually become weak when an infection is present.

The joint is unable to move correctly and causes excruciating pain all of the time. If tenosynovitis isn’t treated soon, the infected area can become infected. Some people feel as if they can work through tenosynovitis, so, the condition will get worse. The worse it gets, the infection can set in. A person can lose a limb if tenosynovitis gets infected because it’s no longer treatable.

For instance, if it’s in the hands and it’s severe, the only way to get rid of it is through amputation. If the limb isn’t amputated, the person may not be able to use that particular hand, wrist, or foot any longer. It could cause him or her to become disabled and unable to do the things that they once loved to do, such as gardening or running.

""

8. Arthritis is a common condition that can result in tenosynovitis because usually, any type of joint pain is related to arthritis.

With arthritis, it’s difficult to move the joints and pain is present. The tendons have torn apart and are causing pain and swelling. In order to get relief, over-the-counter medication or heat and ice therapy is given. In worse cases, steroid injections could be prescribed. Arthritis is known as an old age condition, but it can occur in young adults, especially if they play a lot of sports.

Their tendons have become weak because of the improper use of their feet, wrists, and hands over the years. It becomes difficult for them to even do simple tasks. When they do complete tasks, they have to wear a brace to keep from having pain. With arthritis, too much cold air can make it worse. So, the affected area may always need protective covering.
