Raynaud’s disease is a condition that affects more women than men. It occurs when the fingers and toes become numb and cold because of cold climate or stress. Each year in the United States, there are more than 100,000 cases reported. Raynaud’s disease is considered a chronic condition that can last a person’s entire life.

In Raynaud’s disease, blood circulation is limited because the smaller arteries that supply blood to a person’s skin become narrow. A mild case of the disease is self-treatable. For instance, a mild case of Raynaud’s disease can be treated by dressing warmly in colder climates.

Wearing extra layers of clothing, heavy socks, and gloves can help a lot. For severe cases, prescription medication may be needed. One type of prescription medication that is used to treat severe Raynaud’s disease is calcium blockers. They are used to open small blood vessels in the hands and feet.

1. Blood vessel spasm is a cause of Raynaud’s disease.

Small arteries that supply blood to the fingers and toes can become restricted when they have vasospasms. The blood vessels are unable to get blood to the skin because it causes the vessels to become narrow. This causes the fingers or toes to become cold and numb. Stress can make blood vessels spasm as well. When a person puts their hands in cold water or takes a cold item out of the freezer, it can trigger an episode.

In order to keep from having cold fingers and toes, it’s good to wear warm clothing during the winter months. Putting on extra layers of clothing, such as gloves and socks will help out a lot. When taking out cold items in the freezer, wear gloves. When washing dishes and showering, never use cold water. Even in the summertime, always use warm to hot water.

""

2. Smoking can cause Raynaud’s disease because it constricts blood vessels.

The blood vessels become narrow, which makes it difficult for blood to get to the fingers and toes. Even in the summer, a person who smokes may be cold because there is not enough blood circulating to their fingers and toes.

They may have to wrap up even when others around them are hot. It’s even worse in the winter months, especially if they are not around enough heat to keep them warm. In order for them to stay warm, they will need to have layers and layers of blankets on their beds at night.

They may smoke more to get warm, but they don’t realize that smoking more is making the condition worse. Also, by smoking more, a person will not only have cold hands and fingers, but they may develop another condition known as heart disease.

""

3. Carpal tunnel is when a major nerve puts pressure on a person’s hands that causes pain and numbness.

It can cause a person’s hands to become cold and numb in cold temperatures. In Raynaud’s disease, if a person is a clerical worker, he or she needs to wear heavy gloves to avoid having an attack. Most offices have uncomfortable room temperatures and can lead to cold and numbness in hands at any time. This can cause a person to not be able to complete his or her work on time or at all.

Even though Raynaud’s disease is not considered a disabling disease, it can feel like one. An option for office workers is to have a little electric heater underneath their desk to keep the feet warm. Hand warmers can keep the fingers warm. They need to be placed inside gloves in order for them to work properly.

""

4. Connective tissue diseases have been known to cause Raynaud’s disease.

Some connective tissue diseases include lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. The diseases occur because there are hardening and scarring of the skin, which is also known as scleroderma.

These diseases are rare but can lead to Raynaud’s disease. With rheumatoid arthritis, it affects the hands and feet. Whenever a person comes in contact with anything cold, he or she has pain. People with rheumatoid arthritis get relief by using a heating pad. If it’s affecting their hands, they can wear a heavy gloves and hand warmers.

With lupus, the pain can occur all over the body, but heat is still a good source to use to get some relief. Even during warm months, a person with a connective tissue disorder may need to wrap up warmly to keep from having any pain, such as wearing a sweater and possibly gloves and socks.

""

5. Injuries to hands or feet can occur when a person has frostbite, injuries to the wrists, and surgery.

Frostbite can bring on Raynaud’s disease because the fingers and toes are numb and cold for a long period of time. In order to get relief, a person needs to soak in warm water and wear heavy clothing. In severe cases of frostbite, surgery may be needed. With surgery, Raynaud’s disease can develop because it can change the way a person deals with certain temperatures.

For instance, a person who has had a kidney removal operation may not be able to deal with cold temperatures any longer. The same thing applies to a person who injures their wrists. They may get a cold sensation whenever they’re in pain. In order to get help with the pain, they will need to wear warm gloves or socks. As long as the injury doesn’t get fixed Raynaud’s disease could get worse.

""

6. Repetitive vibrations or actions can lead to Raynaud’s disease.

Some actions and vibrations that can cause a person to have Raynaud’s disease are typing and using a jackhammer. These are repetitive actions and vibrations that can cause injuries to the wrists. It is even worse for a person who has poor form when completing repetitive actions and vibrations.

The wrists are repetitively doing the same movement over and over again, which can cause overuse injuries. Injury to the wrists makes it difficult for blood to circulate to the fingers, which will cause Raynaud’s disease. When using a jackhammer, the person is continuously putting stress on the wrists and at the same time blood is being constricted. It is a good idea to take a break every so often to avoid overuse injuries. Once the injury is there, the only way to get relief from it is by seeing a doctor.

""

7. Medications can cause Raynaud’s disease because they can cause the blood vessels to become narrow.

High blood pressure and ADHD medications are known to have this effect. Even over-the-counter cold medications can narrow the blood vessels. When it comes to prescription and non-prescription medications, a person has to be aware of side effects. Not everyone’s body can handle a certain medication.

Even though medication is supposed to help one disease, it could cause another one, such as Raynaud’s disease. That’s why doctors take blood tests to make sure that no other diseases have occurred while taking a medicine for one disease.

For example, a woman who takes prescription medications for high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes for a long time may develop kidney cancer because the diabetic medication caused cancer to form. The same thing applies to Raynaud’s disease. The wrong medication prescribed can cause the disease to form.

""

8. The disease of arteries can cause Raynaud’s disease

Because the buildup of plaque in blood vessels that pump blood to the heart is constricted because the blood vessels become completely narrow. With Raynaud’s disease, that is the main reason why people have cold and numb fingers and feet. The blood is unable to flow properly through the body.

Pulmonary hypertension is a type of high blood pressure that affects the arteries of the lungs. Once the arteries become constricted Raynaud’s disease becomes an issue and can develop. Any type of disease of the arteries that causes constriction of blood and the blood vessels put a person in danger of getting the disease.

Numbness and coldness may seem unlikely for a person to have when they disease of the arteries because it would seem like the person would be hot all of the time, but the blood can’t circulate properly through the fingers and toes.

""

9. Coffee

can exacerbate Raynaud’s disease because it causes an effect called vasoconstriction. This means that it will narrow the blood vessels. Essentially, when you experience stress, the body will narrow the blood vessels in an attempt to increase blood pressure, which in turn allows the heart to pump more blood around the body more quickly. When it does this, it also sends blood specifically to the muscles and to brain. Finally, the blood thickens (increases viscosity) in order to encourage clotting if you should be wounded: you are now ready for danger.

Coffee and other sources of caffeine actually trigger this same effect. By waking up the brain, coffee triggers the release of stress hormones like cortisol and norepinephrine. The result is that blood moves away from the hands and has a harder time moving through the body and to the fingers.

""

10. Genetics

play a big role in the appearance of Raynaud’s disease. There are actually two forms of this condition: primary and secondary Raynaud’s. Primary Raynaud’s is Raynaud’s that appears without any obvious cause and is normally diagnosed between the 20s and 30s, most often in women. This may be due to hormonal influences.

The other kind of Raynaud’s is secondary, meaning that it has been caused by some kind of underlying health condition. In the case of primary Raynaud’s, there is some evidence to suggest a familial link, meaning in other words that it can be passed down through generations and if your parents suffer from the condition, you are more likely to as well.

In primary Raynaud’s, you might notice that you feel the issue more when it is very cold. This is not only because you are now feeling ‘cold on top of cold’, but also because the cold causes your blood to once again rush toward the heart and organs and away from the extremities.

""

11. Nerve damage

can cause secondary Raynaud’s, which is also distinguished by being referred to as Raynaud’s phenomenon, rather than Raynaud’s disease. Nerve damage is an example of this and can have a number of different causes. For example, nerve damage is often associated with a vitamin B12 deficiency, which can cause tingling, coldness, and a lack of sensation in the extremities (including the toes).

There are many other causes and types of nerve damage associated with the condition however: for instance, many of the other causes we have already looked at actually act via nerve damage.
Of course, the nerves are responsible for relaying information to and from the brain, which includes such things as information about touch, temperature, and the like. It should, therefore, come as no big surprise to learn that this can lead to coldness in the fingers.

""

12. Scleroderma

is a condition that causes a thickening of the skin, and which has been associated with Raynaud’s. This is a form of autoimmune condition, which means that the immune system is mistaking healthy cells for unhealthy ones and thereby attacking them.

In this case, those cells are found in the skin of the hand, and by causing inflammation in the area, nerve signals and blood are restricted, resulting in feelings of coldness and a loss of tactile sensation. Other forms of autoimmune disease associated with the condition include lupus (which also causes tiredness and joint pain) as well as Sjogren’s syndrome.

""

13. Hormones

also appear to play a role, with women being more prone to the condition than men. This is one reason that using medications such as the oral contraceptive pill might lead to the issue being exacerbated. Other potential medications that may cause Raynaud’s phenomenon include migraine medication like ergotamine. Hormone replacement therapy is also a cause.

Keep in mind as well though, that many other things can also cause hormonal changes. For instance, numerous illnesses may work by acting on the hormones: obvious examples being things like hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, both of which can also cause Raynaud’s –as can polycystic ovaries.

Both these conditions are also responsible for increasing the likelihood of other related issues such as nerve damage and carpal tunnel.
Finally, the food we eat, our mood, and even our exposure to sunlight can all play a role in our hormonal balance.

""

14. Stress

is one last thing that can cause Raynaud’s. While it is unlikely that stress should cause secondary Raynaud’s in itself, it is very possible that it might worsen it in much the same way as drinking coffee.
This is because stress is known to increase vasoconstriction as mentioned, making it harder for blood and nerve signals to reach the hands, and thereby causing them to feel extremely cold.

At the same time, stress might also cause an increase in sensitivity that makes you feel colder. When we are stressed, this actually excites the brain cells, making them fire more easily. This is one reason we have racing thoughts, but at the same time it can also cause other effects: such as increased sensitivity to sounds, temperatures, and noises.

Pain can feel worse when you are stressed, and likewise so too can coldness. This is also further exacerbated by a reduction in serotonin, which is normally the ‘feel-good’ hormone, and a natural painkiller. Learning to amange and avoid stress is an important way to avoid these problems.
