Veneers in many ways might seem like the perfect solution if you don’t have quite the smile you always wanted. The idea of a veneer is simple: you are attaching a façade to the front of your teeth, thereby changing their outward appearance while at the same time protecting them from any potential damage on that surface.

This is ideal because it means you can practically transform the appearance of your mouth. You can ‘design’ the smile you want in order to look like a Hollywood celebrity, or perhaps in order to recreate the set of teeth you had in your youth.

But of course no procedure is perfect, and that is certainly true of cosmetic dental procedures. In this post, we’ll look at some of the biggest upshots and downsides of having veneer teeth. The decision ultimately, of course, comes down to you and your goals!

1. Up: They Look Great

The obvious upside is this: veneers look great.

When you flash someone a smile, they actually aren’t going to be seeing your real teeth. Rather, they’re going to be seeing the veneers that will be sitting right there in front of your enamel. And seeing as the veneers won’t have any stains from coffee, seeing as they won’t be damaged or yellowing… you can get that ‘Hollywood’ look.

This is one of the only ways to affordably get the perfect set of glistening white teeth, without having to have a painful procedure, and without having to spend a huge amount of money and spend a large amount of time in surgery.

Many of us wish that we had straighter or whiter teeth. The mouth is one of the parts of our face that we focus on the most and is what we use to speak as well as to express any and all emotion.

For these reasons, a great smile can go a long way in making us more attractive – just as a crooked smile or stained teeth can do the opposite. This is why cosmetic dentistry procedures are so popular.

2. Down: Until You Open Your Mouth

While veneers look great, they are also the least comprehensive solution to a poor looking set of teeth. That is to say that they don’t fully cover your teeth, meaning that if someone sees them from a different angle, they will get quite a different view!

The classic example, of course, is when you yawn, laugh, or sing – and someone gets a flash of all your black fillings. It’s not a great look, and because your teeth previously looked so impressively white, it can actually be quite jarring.

Not the end of the world, but if you were to get crowns or a similar procedure instead, then you would be able to surround the entire tooth making the tops, bottoms, sides, and backs look white too! And psychologically, this can make quite a big difference as you will feel as though your teeth really are healthy and white – rather than just being fakes.

3. Up: They Protect Your Enamel

Many people think of veneers as purely aesthetic. While it is true that this is the main use for veneers, it’s also true that they have additional benefits too. In particular, veneers are very effective for helping you to protect your enamel from plaque, bacteria, and even damage caused by blunt force trauma! It’s like strapping tiny shields to the fronts of your teeth and as you might expect, that can be highly effective.

In this way, using veneers is able to not only undo the damage that has already occurred but also prevent damage that has yet to occur. And this is a huge extra benefit.

""

4. Down: They Won’t Improve Your Jaw

That said, there are limits to the powers of veneers. In particular, veneers can’t help to strengthen your jaw or reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles around the mouth.

What many people don’t realize is that losing a tooth doesn’t just affect the appearance of the mouth inside – it can also affect the mouth outside. That’s because teeth play an important role in supporting the structure of the mouth and helping to fill it out. When the teeth are gone, this causes the tissue around the outside of the mouth and the gums to collapse inward and to create the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

A dental implant will solve this issue. A veneer will not.

""

5. Up: They Are Non-Invasive

What this means, is that in order to change your smile you won’t need to have any teeth removed and you won’t need any other painful procedures either. In fact, veneers aren’t at all painful or uncomfortable and the whole process barely takes any time.

This means that if you’re a busy kind of person, you can get veneers during your lunch breaks at work. It will take one visit to the dentist to discuss what you want your veneers to look like then another to have them attached. Once that’s done, you’ll be good to go!

Compare this to something like dental implants which involve drilling into the jaw and have long recovery periods full of bleeding, pain, and discomfort. There’s an obvious winner here!

""

6. Down: Not Everyone is a Viable Candidate

While veneers have tons of advantages, one drawback is that you may not be able to use them! If you have teeth missing, then a veneer simply can’t solve that problem. There are other solutions – such as using dental implants or bridges for instance. A dental implant involves drilling through the gum and into the jaw in order to screw a new tooth in place. A bridge, on the other hand, involves attaching a fake tooth to the remaining teeth on either side.

These options are available to those with a whole host of dental issues that veneers won’t solve. Likewise, veneers may not be suitable for those that have particularly delicate enamel, oddly shaped teeth, or a host of other issues that complicate matters. If you can’t have veneers though, then you might consider other options like crowns. Where there is a will, there is normally away!

""

7. Up: You Can Choose the Look

Veneers allow you to completely redesign how people see your teeth. They allow you to pick precisely the color you want your teeth to be (don’t go too white or you’ll look odd!) and they can even disguise any crooked areas or chips.

You can also combine veneers with a number of other dental procedures. For example, if you want to straighten your teeth and replace missing ones, you can combine veneers with a bridge or potentially a dental implant (the latter is more invasive but is also the closest you can get to getting missing teeth back). Likewise, if you want to cover up fillings then you might also use crowns in some instances.

In other words, there are plenty of options – many of which are quick and painless. So if you were thinking that your teeth had ‘had it’ there’s still hope. Give us a call and we’re confident we’ll be able to help you design a smile you’re truly proud of.

""

8. Down: They Are Expensive

Another reason that you may not be able to enjoy the benefits of veneers is that you might not be able to afford them. Unfortunately, the veneers are expensive. They aren’t nearly as expensive as other procedures such as implants, or even crowns, but if you plan on getting veneers for your whole mouth (and you really need to if you want to look good), then you need to spend a lot of money to make that happen.

This is something not everyone can afford. And it’s a particularly big issue considering that a lot of health insurance packages won’t cover veneers, and it’s not available on the national health programs found in much of Europe either.

In other words, if you want this procedure you’re going to have to pay for it. Let’s hope the tooth fairy was generous!
