Trichinosis is a less-common type of infection that’s seen in as little as 10, 000 documented cases in the world every year. It’s a parasitic infection that’s most commonly contracted when working with meat infected with the parasite that hasn’t been cooked to the optimal heat that kills the bacteria.

The risk of contracting trichinosis is why it’s generally recommended to make sure that meat is cooked at high temperatures – and cooked completely through – especially when we’re talking about cooking pork and beef. It’s also important to stick to effective hygiene methods at all times, especially when working with raw pork, and to avoid any meat that’s been obviously affected with trichinosis, which can sometimes be seen by the presence of cysts within the meat.

Eating infected meat is the most common way to contract trichinosis, and once you’ve picked it up, you can manifest with a range of different symptoms.

Here are 8 of the most common trichinosis infection symptoms.

1. Severe discomfort, cramping, and pain in the abdomen.

Severe discomfort, cramping, and pain felt in the abdomen is most often the first symptom with which a trichinosis infection will present. Since the most common way of contracting the parasite is the ingestion of meat that’s been infected with the parasite or its eggs, it will most commonly manifest with a range of different symptoms that mimics that of a standard bout of food poisoning.

Several of the symptoms on this list that can be combined and that lasts for longer than the average bout of stomach flu (which is generally no longer than 48 hours), means that you should make an appointment with your doctor and discuss the possibility of a trichinosis infection as the cause behind your symptoms.

In the meantime, the discomfort and abdominal pain can most often be treated symptomatically with over-the-counter medications or natural means like using ginger to ease the discomfort and pain.

2. Excessive and frequent vomiting, usually recurring in nature.

The digestive system is one of the parts of the body that’s the hardest hit by a trichinosis infection, and it’s the first part of the body where you’ll see an infection like this take place; it will first manifest with a normal digestive upset that looks like it could be nothing but your standard stomach flu or upset stomach, but as soon as other symptoms appear – or the initial symptoms don’t go away when you expected them to, then you should consider the possibility of a trichinosis infection as the possible cause.

Excessive vomiting can rapidly dehydrate the body, and if it isn’t symptomatically treated it can be one of the most dangerous potential symptoms of a trichinosis infection that could land you in hospital – or even be fatal if your organs take too much strain during the infection.

When experiencing vomiting that lasts for longer than a few hours, see your doctor by default.

3. A high fever that lasts for several hours at a time.

The normal human temperature might fluctuate with a few decimal degrees throughout the day as the temperature changes, but as soon as we have a high temperature that lasts for an extended period of time, we’re talking about a fever instead. A fever actually has a practical purpose for your body’s immune system, but at the same, it can be dangerous if your body is put through the fever for too long – and in the worst cases it can even lead to total organ shutdown.

A high fever can be symptomatically controlled with the use of aspirin, but if it’s happening because of an underlying infection like trichinosis, you can only expect this symptom to disappear once the source of the infection has been eliminated from the body entirely.

Never try to bring a fever under control yourself through drastic means like a bath in ice water: This can only put your body into shock, and it’s more dangerous than it’s worth.

4. Pain in the muscles.

Pain in the muscles can often signify a range of things wrong with your health, and sometimes it just means that your muscles have taken a considerable amount of strain, like after a heavy session of exercise – in this case, it usually just means that your body is tired and overworked, and rest is all that it takes to restore your muscles back to good as new.

But when this doesn’t work and the pain in your muscles doesn’t go away by itself, or it can be combined with any of the other symptoms that have been mentioned on this list, then it could very well be a symptom of trichinosis, or an underlying infection in your body at the very least – particularly when combined with headaches, dehydration, fever and nausea as accompanying symptoms.

Again, pain in the muscles is likely to recur until the cause of the infection has been entirely treated.

5. Diarrhea that’s usually recurring and doesn’t subside.

Diarrhea is one of the most common symptoms of a stomach or general digestive upset, but it can also present in many cases and disorders that aren’t related to the digestive system at all – and it should always be taken as one of the more serious symptoms associated with your health, because it makes for one of the most dangerous symptoms when it’s left alone for too long.

Untreated diarrhea can dehydrate your body far faster than you can replenish fluids, and it can be a fast killer in just a few hours if we’re talking about a severe enough condition.

If you aren’t managing to bring your diarrhea under control in a few hours, see a doctor before it turns into a few days – because it could be fatal, and you might never reach that point at all if you decide to wait too long to get medical attention.

6. A severe headache with no other cause.

A headache is always a sign that there’s something in your body that needs to be addressed, although most often the severity varies from case to case: Sometimes the cause of a headache is as simple as dehydration and drinking a glass of water more per day is enough to fix the issue, but sometimes it’s not that simple – and once you can combine a headache with some of the symptoms that appear on this list, you’re in the danger zone, and it might well be a trichinosis infection.

If this is the case, the best thing that you can do is stay hydrated, change to a healthier diet and see your doctor for the proper medication needed to bring the infection under control.

If this doesn’t bring the headache under control, then make another appointment with your doctor so that the right cause of the headache can be found.

""

7. A feeling of overall weakness.

A feeling of overall weakness is generally a sign that something is wrong with your health and needs to be checked out sooner rather than later; this can sometimes be because your body isn’t getting the right type of nutrients for its needs, or because it isn’t absorbing the nutrients that you’re putting into it – and there are a huge range of different disorders that can cause this symptom alone.

When trying to find the underlying cause for this symptom, the first thing your doctor will do is to consider all present factors that could be the cause – and everything has to be considered, including any other symptoms that you might experience along with it.

If overall weakness matches up with some of the other symptoms on this list, it’s advised that you seek medical attention and mention the possibility of trichinosis if you believe that you might have been exposed to it.

""

8. Inflammation of the organs and spreading of the infection.

Trichinosis is a parasitic infection that is contracted through the ingestion of meat that has been infected by the parasite, and it most commonly manifests through a range of different digestive symptoms, most of which have bee mentioned on this list so far.

A trichinosis infection doesn’t have to always be restricted just to the digestive system, and the symptoms can show through several different parts of your health, including inflammation of the organs within the body if the infection is left untreated and allowed to spread.

By the point inflammation of the organs becomes a symptom, the infection has reached a more severe stage, and medical attention must be gotten as soon as possible to avoid the organs shutting down completely. Symptoms experienced when trichinosis affects the organs include severe pain in the abdomen and back and might include other symptoms that are consistent with organ failure, such as darkening of the urine or change in coloration of the skin.
