Bladder cancer will typically start in the lining of the bladder that is along the inner wall. If bladder cancer is not treated it can easily and quickly spread into the nearby lymph nodes and tissues. A male is three times as likely to develop cancer in the bladder than a woman. White men are at the highest risk for developing this type of cancer.

Among men, bladder cancer is the fourth most common type of cancer. Roughly five percent of all new diagnoses of cancers in the United States is bladder cancer. The risk of developing this type of cancer depends on several factors including medication, environment, age, and other things. Nine out of every ten diagnoses of bladder cancer occur after the age of 55 and the average diagnosis age is 73.

Here are some of the common symptoms of bladder cancer to watch out for.

1. No Symptoms

One of the biggest concerns about bladder cancer is that it can be difficult to detect. One of the main reasons for this is because during the beginning stages of bladder cancer there are often no symptoms of the issue at all. Most people do not realize that they have bladder cancer until it has advanced to a later stage.

This means that by the time bladder cancer is detected it has already spread into the lymph nodes and the surrounding organs. In addition, many of the symptoms of bladder cancer are often caused by other issues. This can cause a person to be misdiagnosed during the early stages of the disease. Symptoms of bladder cancer may also occur if the person has developed another form of cancer.

If you are struggling with any of the symptoms on this list it is important to discuss them with your doctor as it could be bladder cancer that is causing the issues to occur.

2. Blood in the Urine

One of the more common symptoms of bladder cancer is finding blood in the urine. Noticing blood in the urine can be quite alarming. This is typically a sign that there is something not right going on within the body.

Blood in the urine caused by bladder cancer is often quite visible, painless, and will come and go. In fact, many people who have bladder cancer will notice blood in their urine for a day or two and then it will go away. The blood in the urine then comes back in a few days or at times even weeks later.

With bladder cancer, blood is often present throughout the entire urination process. This acts as a clue that something is wrong, but it is not a hard and fast rule that a person has bladder cancer. At times, blood is not seen by the naked eye but is picked up through a urine sample using a microscope.

3. Irritation During Urination

A person who is suffering from bladder cancer may experience different symptoms during urination. They may have a burning or a painful discomfort when they urinate. Some people complain about having to urinate more frequently. This may occur during the day or night time hours.

Bladder cancer may also cause a person to feel like they have to urinate even when the bladder is empty or not even full. Incontinence can also be a symptom of bladder cancer. Of course, all of these symptoms can also be a sign of other medical issues. An enlarged prostate in men can cause many of these same symptoms. Urinary tract infections can also cause a person to experience painful urination or the need or feeling of needing to urinate more frequently.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms involving urination it is important to see your doctor have tests ran in order to determine the cause.

4. Urination Obstruction

A person who has bladder cancer may feel like there is something that is blocking their flow of urine. If you ever feel like there is something blocking the flow of your urine you need to see your doctor right away in order to determine what is causing this sensation.

Just like the other irritative symptoms, this sensation could be caused by something else such as an enlargement of the prostate in men. It is best to have it evaluated to determine the exact cause. Generally speaking, obstructive symptoms are much less common than irritative symptoms of bladder cancer. Some examples of urination obstruction include hesitancy during urination.

This is having trouble getting the urine released or noticing that the flow of urine is weak or intermittent. Straining to urinate is also a symptom that something may be wrong in the bladder and needs to be discussed with your doctor.

5. Loss of Appetite

Almost anyone who has developed any type of cancer may experience a loss of appetite. This is a common symptom for most cancer patients. A person who has bladder cancer may experience a loss of appetite. These individuals simply do not have a desire to eat, even foods that were once enjoyable to them.

The reason for this could be caused by the metabolic changes that are caused by cancer. Some of the other factors that may contribute to the loss of appetite include weakness, pain, fatigue, and depression. In individuals who have bladder cancer, cancer may have spread to the stomach and throughout the abdominal muscles. This can cause them to feel full and simply not wanting to eat.

It can cause them to simply not feel hungry or it may cause them to have stomach issues as areas may become obstructed. This can cause them to simply not eat.

6. Loss of Weight

Another common symptom of any patient that has been diagnosed with cancer is weight loss. It is obvious that a loss of appetite, which is another sign of cancer, can lead to a person losing weight. After all, a person who does not have an appetite is not going to eat as much and when you are not eating as much you are more likely to lose weight.

In fact, almost 40 percent of patients who are diagnosed with cancer have reported that one of the first symptoms that they noticed was an unexplained weight loss when they were first diagnosed. For those who have more advanced stages of cancer unexpected weight loss occurs in nearly 80 percent.

For those who have an advanced stage of thyroid cancer cachexia may occur. This refers to several symptoms such as fatigue, weight loss, muscle atrophy, and a loss of appetite.

7. Weight Loss that is Unexplained

Another common symptom of any patient that has been diagnosed with cancer is weight loss that cannot be explained. It is obvious that a loss of appetite, which is another sign of cancer, can lead to a person losing weight. However, there are some people who continue to eat quite well when they have cancer and yet they still begin to lose weight.

This loss of weight is not from dieting or exercising, it is unexplainable as the person has not made any changes in their lifestyle, but are still losing weight. In fact, almost 40 percent of patients who are diagnosed with cancer have reported that one of the first symptoms that they noticed was an unexplained weight loss when they were first diagnosed.

For those who have more advanced stages of cancer unexpected weight loss occurs in nearly 80 percent. This is one of the surest signs that a person has developed some form of cancer.

8. Flank Pain

There are some people who have developed bladder cancer and report that they have pain located on their side. This pain may also occur in the middle of the back. The cause for this pain is often because a tumor may be blocking the ureter.

The ureter is one of the two tubes located in the body that has the job of transporting urine from the kidneys to the bladder. The urine goes from the kidneys and then is stored in the bladder until it is ready to be released. If there is something blocking one of these tubes the urine cannot travel to the bladder the way that it is supposed to. When this occurs it can cause the kidneys to become infected.

When the kidneys become inflamed it can cause a person to have pain in their side or in their back. This type of pain should be discussed with your doctor to find out what the underlying cause may be.

9. Unusual Fatigue and Weakness

If the bladder cancer spreads to other areas of the body it is called metastasis. There are several symptoms that may occur during this more advanced stage of the disease. Some of the more generalized symptoms of advanced bladder cancer include extreme fatigue and weakness. A person suffering from advanced bladder cancer may find that they are unusually tired all of the time.

This extreme exhaustion may come in the form of not being able to do tasks that you normally would be able to easily complete. Simply climbing the stairs may end up with a person being completely exhausted. In addition, a person suffering from bladder cancer may also feel extremely weak. Lifting anything may become nearly impossible.

Fatigue, exhaustion, and weakness can also be accompanied by pain in different areas such as the perineum, the flank, or in the area located above the pubic bone.
