When the mouth becomes sore and inflamed, it is referred to generally as stomatitis. When the mouth is sore it can cause a person to have difficulty eating, talking, and even sleeping. Stomatitis may occur anywhere in or around the mouth. This includes the gums, inside of the cheeks, on the tongue, on the palate, and anywhere around the lips. There are several types of stomatitis that a person may have. The most common type of stomatitis is a canker sore. Cold sores and simple mouth irritations are common as well. A number of things can cause stomatitis. The mouth is the first place digestion occurs, so irritation in the mouth can cause other health issues as well. It can also be a sign of an underlying health condition. Additionally, a lot of bacteria and other unwanted items can enter through the mouth causing stomatitis. Here are 15 common causes of stomatitis.

1. Injury

If you are hit in the mouth or have any type of injury to the mouth it can cause stomatitis. Some people might develop a canker sore after an injury to the mouth or face. It is important to make sure that you are protecting your mouth as much as possible. If you play sports, wearing a mouthguard can help to protect your teeth and gums if you happen to take a ball to the face. Avoiding injury to the face is one of the best ways to avoid stomatitis. If an area of your mouth becomes inflamed or irritated, it can be difficult to eat or even talk. If your injury causes swelling in your face it is a good idea to see your doctor. Icing the area can help reduce the swelling and also ease some of the pain that you might be feeling.

2. Dental Work

If you have recently had any type of dental work completed you might notice a canker sore developing inside of your mouth. Dental work that can cause stomatitis includes getting braces or dentures. You might also develop stomatitis after a root canal or having fillings placed. Stomatitis is caused by the dentist being inside of your mouth for a long period of time. The inside of the mouth is fairly sensitive and when you have dental work done it can cause you to experience inflammation in different areas of your mouth. If you develop a canker sore or general soreness after having dental work done, you can use antiseptic rinses to help ensure that your mouth stays clean and germ-free. You will want to brush gently. There are also over-the-counter medications that you can use to treat the canker sore. Most of the time the canker sore will go away on its own after a few days.

""

3. Brushing too Hard

It is important to make sure that you are brushing your teeth on a regular basis. If you are not brushing regularly, you are more likely to develop stomatitis. This is because not brushing allows bacteria and other germs to build up in your mouth, which can lead to infections and other diseases. When you are brushing your teeth many people think that they need to use a hard bristle brush and really scrub. This is really not the case. You should use gentle circular strokes when you are brushing. A soft-bristled toothbrush is the best choice. You should brush your teeth at least twice each day, especially if you have stomatitis. If you are not brushing because of the soreness in your mouth, it could cause other issues to develop. It can be difficult to brush with a canker sore, but you should just be careful around the area that is sore and make sure that you are still getting your teeth and mouth clean.

""

4. Eating Acidic Foods

Acid can be tough on your teeth, gums, and mouth. Additionally, it is difficult to digest and can cause you to experience heartburn or acid reflux. This feels like someone has set your chest on fire. The burning sensation can be felt throughout the esophagus and entire digestive system. If you eat foods that have a high acid content such as citrus fruits like oranges, pineapples, lemons, and limes, you are at a higher risk of developing stomatitis. The acid from these foods that you eat regularly can cause the skin around and inside of your mouth to become irritated over time. This consistent irritation can cause the areas of your mouth to become more sensitive, resulting in mouth sores such as canker sores as well as other issues. If you are experiencing stomatitis, cutting out acidic foods from your diet can help alleviate some of the pain you are having.

""

5. Allergies

When you think of allergies, chances are you think of coughing, sneezing, and even possibly getting a rash. However, if you have an allergic reaction to certain types of foods you might also experience stomatitis after you eat that type of food. People might be allergic to several types of foods. There are some foods that are more likely to cause stomatitis than others. Some common foods that are associated with allergic reactions resulting in stomatitis include coffee, chocolates, acidic foods such as fruits that have a high citrus content. If you notice that your mouth is hurting after eating certain types of foods, try removing them from your diet to see if it helps your mouth heal. You can also discuss allergies with your doctor. Your doctor may run an allergy test to see how you react to different types of foods and make it easier to know what you should avoid.

""

6. Vitamin B

Vitamin B is an important vitamin for your health. Many people have low vitamin B levels and do not realize it. If you have a diet that is not high enough in vitamin B, you might experience several symptoms as a result. Your body needs a certain amount of this important vitamin in order to properly function. Low vitamin B can result in fatigue, numbness in the hands and feet, and you might also develop canker sores and other types of pain in and around the mouth. You should have blood work done at your doctor’s office at least once per year. If your vitamin B levels are low your doctor may prescribe a supplement for you to take daily or possibly weekly. If the supplement does not raise your levels, you might need to get a vitamin B shot in order to boost your levels to where they need to be.

""

7. Iron

Iron is a mineral that is also important in keeping your body healthy. A low iron count can cause similar symptoms as having low vitamin B. Since the symptoms of both low iron and low vitamin B are similar, it is important to make sure that you have yearly blood work done to determine what your counts are. This blood work will allow your doctor to determine what you might be low on and then determine the best plan of action. While having too little iron can cause health issues, having too much can be an issue as well. It is important to make sure that you are keeping your iron levels in check as this can go a long way in helping you feel better. People who have low iron often experience exhaustion. In addition, they are more likely to develop stomatitis. Taking an iron supplement might be needed to help boost your levels.

""

8. Hormones

Hormones play many different roles throughout the body. In fact, hormones regulate almost everything inside of the body. This includes hair growth, your mood, energy levels, and much more. If you are a woman and going through menopause you might experience stomatitis as a result of imbalanced hormone levels. When your hormones are in balance you will feel good and are less likely to become sick. If your body is producing too little or too much of any hormone, you can develop symptoms. This includes the development of canker sores as well as other stomatitis. If you find that you often have sores in your mouth, discuss the issue with your doctor. It may be caused by an imbalance of hormones and your doctor will be able to prescribe medications that can help get you back in balance. Once your hormones are back in check, your symptoms will likely disappear.

""

9. Emotional Stress

Many people do not realize how much havoc stress can wreak havoc on the body. Stress is one of the main causes of many different types of health issues. It can cause chest pain, high blood pressure, stomatitis, as well as many other health issues. If you have been under a lot of stress, there is a good chance that you can develop stomatitis. These mouth sores are a result of the body attempting to protect itself. When you are under stress, hormones become elevated. This causes sores to appear. If you are feeling a lot of stress, try calming exercises to help. Deep breathing exercises and meditation are good stress relievers. If you have developed stomatitis as a result of stress, taking the time to relax can help it heal more quickly. Additionally, calming exercises can help the rest of your body heal, which is important for your health overall.

""

10. Toothpaste

As mentioned, dental work and brushing your teeth too hard can result in sores in your mouth. Another thing that might be causing stomatitis is the type of toothpaste that you are using. Toothpaste that contains sodium lauryl sulfate could be the reason that you are having issues in your mouth. If you have developed sore areas in your mouth and you are having trouble determining the cause, check the label on your toothpaste. If you see sodium lauryl sulfate as one of the ingredients, there is a good chance that this is the reason that you are experiencing stomatitis. Try finding a new toothpaste to use and make sure that you read the ingredients list first. There are many natural kinds of toothpaste available that will get your teeth just as clean. Removing this from your daily routine could help clear up the mouth issues that you are experiencing.

""

11. Bacterial Allergies

The body, including the mouth, is full of bacteria. There are some bacteria that are actually good and help you remain healthy. However, there are also bacteria that are not good and can cause health issues to arise. When you eat, the saliva that forms is the first defense against these bad bacteria. The saliva fights off the bacteria that is found in the food and starts the digestive process. There are times when the bad bacteria in your mouth overcomes the good bacteria. When this happens, you might notice that your mouth becomes sore. A canker sore or another type of issue might develop. Even if the bacteria in your mouth are defensive, there are some people that are allergic to bacteria. The reaction of the bacteria can cause you to experience pain in your mouth as well. Your doctor can help determine if the bacteria in your mouth is causing your stomatitis.

""

12. Smoking

It is no secret that smoking is bad for you. Smoking causes a number of health issues, including lung disease and possibly lung cancer. Heart disease, liver disease, and many other health issues can come from smoking as well. In addition, if you smoke you are more likely to develop stomatitis. The best thing that you can do for your overall health is to try to quit smoking as soon as you possibly can. There are several programs available that can help you during the process of quitting smoking. Your doctor can prescribe medications that can help you quit. Most programs are free. If you are struggling with stomatitis as a result of smoking, it is important to note that some of the quit smoking aids such as nicotine gum and lozenges, might cause sores to develop in the mouth as well so patches might be a better option.

""

13. Oral Cancer

There are many different reasons a person might develop oral cancer. This includes smoking. When you are suffering from oral cancer, sores will develop in your mouth. Additionally, you might develop canker sores. If you have sores in and around your mouth that do not heal on their own after a few weeks, you need to make sure that you go see your doctor as soon as possible. Your doctor will order tests to see if the sores might be cancerous. If you have oral cancer, your doctor will start a treatment plan for you right away. The earlier that oral cancer is discovered, the better chance that it can be taken care of without further issues. Oral cancer is quite common among people who smoke as well as others. Treatment for oral cancer will vary based on the type of cancer and how much cancer has progressed.

""

14. Crohn’s Disease

People who suffer from Crohn’s disease have inflammation along the digestive tract. This disease can cause weight loss, weight gain, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fatigue. The inflammation that causes this disease can cause inflammation in different areas of the digestive tract depending on the person. This means that some people who suffer from Crohn’s disease may have symptoms located in their mouths and around it. The disease can become quite painful and possibly debilitating as the digestive tract becomes inflamed and very uncomfortable for long periods. Stomatitis is common among people with this disease. One of the reasons is because often a person suffering from this disease will become malnourished. When you become malnourished your body is not getting enough zinc, vitamin B, and iron. All of these low levels can cause stomatitis. Keeping inflammation under control and making sure that you are maintaining a healthy diet are important for alleviating the symptoms of Crohn’s Disease.

""

15. Celiac Disease

Celiac disease is another reason a person might develop stomatitis. Celiac disease is caused by an immune reaction from the consumption of gluten. Gluten is something that is found in barley, wheat, and rye. A person who is diagnosed with celiac disease will need to avoid eating foods that contain gluten. If you eat foods that contain gluten, it can cause damage to the lining of the small intestine. This damage can prevent the small intestine from being able to absorb some nutrients. When the body cannot absorb nutrients it can cause you to become malnourished. When this happens your body is not getting the nutrients that it needs in order to properly function. If you do not get the proper nutrients you can develop many other health issues. This includes the development of stomatitis. Avoiding gluten if you are diagnosed with celiac is very important as this will help prevent damage to the intestines.
