A clavicle fracture is when the bone of the shoulder and breastbone are broken. It is a condition that can be treated and healed within days to weeks. In order to find out if you have a clavicle fracture you need to have lab and imaging tests done. If the clavicle fracture is severe, going to the emergency room is the only course of action. In order to make the clavicle fracture heal, surgery will be needed.

On the other hand, physical therapy, an arm sling, and medications may be the only thing that is needed to heal the fracture, if it’s not severe. There are many causes of getting a clavicle fracture. If you know what can cause one, you’ll be careful whenever you go somewhere or even in the house.

There are eight common causes of a clavicle fracture that you need to be aware of. Once you know, you can seek medical treatment right away.

1. Falls are a common cause of a Clavicle Fracture.

It can occur when you land on your shoulder or when your hand is outstretched. Falls can occur anywhere, including at home, outside, or at a business. At a business, sometimes they have a wet sign on the floor to let customers know that they have to be cautious. It is painful when you fall down on your shoulder. In order to get up, you’ll need assistance. You won’t be able to get up on your own because you will be in so much pain.

Make sure when someone helps you up, they don’t touch the shoulder that is in pain. They could cause further damage. An emergency room visit is your only course of action at this point. At the emergency room, lab and imagining tests will be taken. At the same time, pain medication will be administered. The pain medication may make you drowsy.

2. Vehicle injuries are another common cause when you get a Clavicle Fracture.

Bicycle, motorcycle, and car accidents can cause you to have an injury to your shoulder. Vehicle accidents can’t be avoided, especially when others on the road are not paying attention. They are in a hurry and don’t care who else is on the road. When you have vehicle accidents, you are more than likely to land on your shoulder since the bicycle or motorcycle will turn over.

In a car accident, you may hit your shoulder on the dashboard or steering wheel because of the force of the impact. When the ambulance comes, they might not know exactly how to handle you, unless you tell them. Since you’re in so much pain, it may be difficult to tell them what’s wrong. They may get an idea when you holler out in pain when they touch your shoulder area.

3. Sports injuries cause Clavicle Fractures.

This can happen on the rink, court, or field. When people play sports, they play hard. They don’t consider that an injury could occur. Sometimes when a sports injury occurs, the player may not say anything, especially if the pain isn’t excruciating. They will continue to play until the pain becomes too much to bear. Since the player waited too long to say anything about the injury, it may have become severe.

The only way to get relief is through surgery. Once the surgery is completed, the player may have to wait six to eight weeks to play their sport again. The arm will be in a sling during that time. The player shouldn’t move the shoulder unless the physical therapist tells him or her to. By trying to move the shoulder to get it to heal faster, it will take longer for it to heal.

4. Birth injury is another way a Clavicle Fracture can occur.

In the birth canal, force can cause the infant to break the bone in the shoulder area. The doctors and nurses may not know until they realize the infant won’t stop crying. The arm may be hanging and this may alert the medical professional. The infant needs to be handled with care during this time. The medical professionals may place arm protection on the baby so that he or she doesn’t move it. When the baby is handled, the baby has to be picked up on the opposite side.

Parents may be limited to how often they can hold their baby since the parents tend to hold the baby tight. They might forget what the medical professional has told them on how to hold the baby. Once the fracture heals, the baby can home with its parents, but the doctor will tell the parents what they need to do.

5. Pedestrian injury can cause a Clavicle Fracture.

When a pedestrian gets hit by a car, he or she is most likely going to land on their shoulder. The hand outstretches and causes injury to the shoulder. A lot of times the pain isn’t felt until hours later. When this occurs, go to the emergency room immediately. The pain will be excruciating. During a pedestrian accident, the ambulance can pick you up, if you’re unable to get to the hospital on your own.

Pain medicine and imaging tests will be conducted. The person may have to stay in the hospital overnight for observation. If it’s not severe, the person will be released the next day with a written prescription for pain medication, along with a referral to a physical therapist.

Since the person got hit by a vehicle, it won’t cost him or her anything out-of-pocket. The person is free to go to any doctor he or she wants to.

6. Lifting heavy items can cause a Clavicle Fracture.

Men tend to place heavy items on their shoulders in order to get the job done quicker. The more they do it, they will end up with an injury to their shoulder. The next time the person tries to lift something, the person will drop the item. There may be swelling in the area because of the heavyweight placed on the shoulder. During this time, icing, pain relievers, and physical therapy will help. Placing the arm in a sling will also help.

The person shouldn’t try placing another item on their other shoulder. In order for him or her to do that, the injured shoulder will have to be moved. The injured shoulder needs rest. The person may have to do other work that can be done with the other hand. On the other hand, it may be best to stay home and rest while the shoulder heals.

7. Osteoporosis is a common cause of Clavicle Fracture.

The bones are weak and if a slip and fall occurs, the injury will occur. People that have osteoporosis have to be extremely careful when doing anything. They can’t lift on anything or try bending down to reach for something. They have to be careful when walking anywhere, including at a business or in the home. One fall can permanently cause the person to be unable to do things on his or her own, such as cooking or cleaning around the home. Assistance will be needed in this case.

Older people are not the only ones that can have osteoporosis, young adults and teenagers can get it as well. For young adults and teenagers like to stay active. When they have osteoporosis, they have to sit on the sidelines while others their age are having fun. Even rubbing muscle cream on the shoulder won’t do any good.

8. Certain types of cancer can cause a Clavicle Fracture.

Cancer can attack the bones and make it difficult to walk or use the arms, for example. Cancer patients have a tendency to fall a lot. The more they fall, the more their bones are breaking. With cancer patients, the doctors don’t like to operate too much on them. The best the cancer patient can do is to wear an arm sling to see if it will heal.

Radiation and chemotherapy could make the fracture worse. Since cancer has taken over the bones, it will cause the person to have to use a wheelchair. Cancer patients need to stay active, but in this situation, they can’t. Cancer patients need assistance for everything that they do because they are capable of falling anytime.

For instance, they can fall trying to put their clothes on. The wheelchair could tip over where they fall on their shoulders.
