Bulging eyes are a condition that typically occurs due to thyroid dysfunction. People who are living with Graves’ disease are most at risk for developing symptoms of bulging eyes. With Graves’ disease, the affected individual experiences the thyroid producing too much T3 and T4. These hormones regulate metabolism and control the release and consumption of energy in the body.

As a result, the patient develops a condition known as “hyperthyroidism.” Hyperthyroidism can cause numerous adverse health situati9ons in affected individuals. Fortunately, the disease is curable, and doctors treat it using hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

In most cases, the patient can make a full recovery from the disorder, with no lasting health complications. However, the disease may cause the patient to experience the onset of bulging eye syndrome. Patients with this condition experience the eyeballs protruding from the eye sockets, giving the eyes a bulging appearance. Here are eight common symptoms of bulging eyes.

1. Anxiety and Irritability

People who notice the onset of bulging eyes are typically dealing with a case of hyperthyroidism. As a result of the hormone imbalance produced by the condition, the patient may find that they notice an increase in anxiety and irritability. These swings in mood are due to large amounts of T3 and T4, increasing metabolic rate.

The person may start to feel edgy during the day, and they may find it hard to sleep at night. These changes in energy levels are not for the better, and many people may find that they are fatigued and tired during the day, but unable to fall asleep at night. This situation results in the onset of insomnia in the affected individual exacerbating the symptoms of the disease.

High anxiety disorder requires immediate intervention from a medical professional to bring hormone levels back into balance. If left untreated and unmanaged, the patient may start to show signs of mental illness.

2. Weight loss

The thyroid is the butterfly-shaped gland at the front of the neck. It releases T4, T3, and thyroid-stimulating hormone. People who are dealing with Graves’ disease or hyperthyroidism find that the thyroid becomes dysfunctional, resulting in the onset of hyperthyroidism. Patients who are dealing with this disorder experience and increase in metabolic rate.

As a result of the increase in metabolism, the patient may find that they start to lose bodyweight. This situation occurs, even though the patient is continuing to eat normally. Hyperthyroidism does not play a role in stimulating the appetite. Therefore, the patient may continue to lose weight, but not notice any symptoms of an increase in hunger.

The weight loss will continue until the patient receives medical treatment to balance thyroid hormone levels in the body. However, after receiving treatment, the patient will start to return to a healthy body mass index for their height and genetic profile.

3. A feeling of Grit in the Eyes

Patients who are dealing with a case of bulging eye syndrome may feel like they always have grit in the eyes. As a result, they tend to rub the eyes frequently, resulting in an exacerbation of the symptoms of inflammation and irritation. The irritation and gritty feeling do not come from foreign bodies floating around in the eyeball. Instead, the condition occurs due to the scarring of the inside of the eyelid.

This scarring rubs against the corneal lens, producing a scratching sensation that leaves the patient with plenty of irritation in the eyeball. As a result, the whites of the eyes may start to turn red, resulting in further symptoms of inflammation. Patients may gain some relief from using natural tears to keep the eyeballs lubricated.

However, eye drops are not a permanent solution to the condition, and if left unmanaged, the patient will continue to feel a sensation of irritation in the eye.

4. Puffy Swollen Eyes

The irritation symptoms associated with bulging eye symptoms may steadily worsen over time. The patient feels like they have sand or grit in their eyes that they can’t remove. Even when the patient rubs their eyes in an attempt to remove the grit, they are unable to get any relief or move the grit out of the eye.

This situation occurs due to the scarring on the inside of the eyelid caused by the condition. As a result, the patient’s eyelids and surrounding tissues may start to swell a give a puffy appearance. These symptoms of inflammation are challenging for the patient to deal with, and even the use of eye drops provides them with little, or at best, temporary relief from the irritation symptoms.

Patients may require the use of a cooling gel mask to bring down the swelling. In some cases of severe irritation, a doctor may prescribe anti-inflammatories or corticosteroids to help the patient manage the symptoms of swelling and irritation of the eyelids.

5. Dry Eye Syndrome

Patients who experience the onset of bulging eye syndrome may find that they start to experience the beginning of dry eyes. Patients may struggle to fully close their eyelids due to the effect of the eyeball protruding from the socket. As a result, they may start to blink less frequently. As a result, the corneal lens dries out, and the patient will notice an exacerbation in their symptoms of irritation of the eyeball, and swelling of the eyelids.

Dry eye syndrome describes a chronic dryness of the eyeballs. In some cases, the tear ducts may experience inflammation, resulting in a loss of lubricating material for the eyeball. Patients may gain some temporary relief from the condition with the use of eye drop formulations to relieve dryness.

However, the effects of eye drops are only temporary, and the patient may continue to experience symptoms of irritation and inflammation that escalate as the condition progresses.

6. Bulging Eyes

The most apparent symptom of bulging eye syndrome is a protrusion of the eyeballs from the eye sockets. This symptom starts slowly at first, and it may take weeks or months for the condition to reach its peak. The patient’s corneal lens may start to protrude from the healthy flush appearance on the eyeball. As a result, the patient may begin to notice the onset of a feeling of grit in the eye and the beginning of irritation and inflammation symptoms.

The effects of the disorder are subtle at first, and the affected individual may not notice the advancement of the condition for the first few weeks. One of the simplest methods for evaluating bulging eye syndrome is checking on the whites of the eyes while the eyelids are at rest. People with normal eyelid function will find that the eyelid covers the whites of the eyes when at rest.

However, patients who are dealing with a case of bulging eye disorder find that the whites of the eyes are visible above the iris when the eyelids are at rest.

7. Enlarged Thyroid Gland

One of the leading causes of bulging eye syndrome is hyperthyroidism caused by Graves’ disease. Patients who are dealing with the onset of hyperthyroidism notice changes in the shape and size of the thyroid gland. Under normal circumstances, the thyroid is not visible at the surface of the skin.

Patients who are dealing with the onset of hyperthyroidism may notice that the gland starts to swell. This condition is known as “goiter,” and it’s an inflammation of the tissues in the thyroid, leading to a protrusion of the gland from the neck. The thyroid may become sensitive to touch, as the amount of inflammation in the affected area causes inflammation of surrounding tissues.

The patient may also find that they start to develop symptoms of not being able to swallow their food. The affected individual may also have trouble pronouncing certain words, and in the advanced stages of the condition, the patient may end up choking on food that they swallow.

8. Vision Loss

The constant irritation of the corneal lens by the scarring inside the individual may start to cause severe problems with the patient’s vision. At first, the patient may begin to experience blurred vision or a sensation that there are floaters in the eye. However, this sensation is due to the scratching of the lends, and it will continue to degrade if the patient does not receive treatment.

If left undiagnosed and untreated, the affected individual may start to experience a steady loss of vision that may lead to blindness. In most cases where the vision loss gets to this stage, the effects are permanent, and the patient will have to deal with the impact of blindness for the rest of their life.

However, it’s rare for cases to reach this stage, as most patients will seek treatment as the vision loss symptoms appear, or before this stage of the disorder. Doctors can reverse hyperthyroidism with the use of hormone replacement therapy. As a result, the eyes should return to normal with no lasting physical damage.
