Calciphylaxis is an ailment that affects the kidneys. It is a serious condition that results in a buildup of calcium in the blood vessels of the skin and fat. It is also often referred to as calcific uremic arteriolopathy. Usually, calciphylaxis is found in patients who suffer from end-stage renal disease. It can also develop in those who have undergone a kidney transplant, or those who are taking dialysis due to kidney failure.

Aside from the calcium buildup, calciphylaxis also caused skin lesions that are extremely painful. Another common side effect of the condition is severe infections that frequently prove fatal. Calciphylaxis also encourages the formation of blood clots and skin ulcers. In many cases, these skin ulcers become infected.

Though rare, the condition may develop in people who are not suffering from any form of kidney disease. Knowing the symptoms of calciphylaxis is important if you want to diagnose the condition early.

1. Depression

Depression is an ailment that affects a large number of people across the world. In some cases, this can be brought on due to temporary stressors, in other cases such as with calciphylaxis patients, the stressors are permanent and can’t be easily relived. Most calciphylaxis spend a great deal of time in pain, unwell and hospitalized. This paired with any companion illnesses can lead to moderate or even clinical depression Chronic depression from calciphylaxis can be treated with medication.

Ativan and Xanax are highly effective, typical treatment ranges from four to eight weeks and should be re-evaluated regularly. Of the two, Ativan is more addictive due to its rapid onset. In most patients, the body will develop tolerance after the eight-week mark prompting either an increase in the dosage to maintain efficiency or a change in medication completely. Any patient suffering from kidney disease should be monitored for calciphylaxis and depression.

2. Hypercalcemia

Hypercalcemia is a serious condition that occurs when there is too much calcium in the blood. While our bodies need adequate amounts of calcium to function, too much can be harmful. One of the common symptoms of someone who may be suffering from calciphylaxis is the presence of Hypercalcemia. People suffering from Hypercalcemia often experience high quantities of kidney stones and weak bones. Hypercalcemia also has a negative effect on the brain and heart.

Too much calcium in the blood can make it hard for your kidneys to properly function, this can lead to a wide range of other complications aside from Hypercalcemia itself. The parathyroid glands are tasked with regulating the amount of calcium in your blood, when these glands become overactive it can result in the development of Hypercalcemia.

If you have been diagnosed with this condition, it is a good idea to have your doctor check for calciphylaxis as well.

3. Skin Lesions

The most noticeable symptom of calciphylaxis is skin lesions. In those suffering from calciphylaxis, these skin lesions will develop most often in the areas of the body with high concentrations of fat. Typically that means the lower limbs such as on the thighs, buttocks, and calves. Lesions from calciphylaxis are also common on the breast, belly and the meaty parts of the arms. These skin lesions are often extremely painful and very hard to heal. Even with treatment, over time, these will progress into ulcers or hard nodules.

Calcific uremic arteriolopathy will lead to constant hospitalization, extreme levels of pain, and recurring infections that are often fatal. Calciphylaxis is an independent illness however it is often caused by a different yet related condition.

Calciphylaxis can also cause other ailments that further destabilize the body and encourage the development of additional skin lesions. If you have unexplained skin lesions that won’t heal, calciphylaxis may be the cause.

4. Weakness

Many people suffering from calciphylaxis note that they often feel weak and fatigued. Your body gets the essential nutrients and oxygen it needs from your blood, anytime there is a condition that alters the essential mix it can lead to a range of heal problems. Your body and brains run on a mix of oxygen, calcium, potassium, blood, and other essential nutrients. When you are suffering from calciphylaxis, your body is not getting what it needs to offer the usual amount of support.

In addition, your kidneys are tasked with cleaning your system of toxins and many other essential functions. Those suffering from calciphylaxis will have those functions altered due to how the condition affects the kidney.

The weakness and fatigue from calciphylaxis can also be attributed to infections, skin lesions and pain that often accompany the ailment. Calciphylaxis is also often found with other conditions such as renal failure which can further cause fatigue, malaise, and weakness.

5. Hyperphosphatemia

Phosphate is a normal electrolyte found in the body. This electrolyte carries a small electric charge and converts into phosphorus which is essential for your health. When there is too much phosphate in your blood it is called hyperphosphatemia. One of the more common symptoms of calciphylaxis is hyperphosphatemia, though each condition can lead to the other or develop as completely unrelated issues.

Phosphate helps make your teeth and bones stronger, generates energy in the body and assist with the building of cell membranes. Too much of this super electrolyte can lead to stroke, heart attacks, and other health problems. One of the first signs of kidney damage is a high level of phosphate in the bloodstream.

Too much phosphate can also indicate calciphylaxis, which is another condition commonly found in patients suffering from kidney damage. Phosphate is found naturally in the body, but it is also obtained from your food.

6. Cramping

Many patients who are suffering from calciphylaxis may experience cramping of the limbs or muscles. A muscle cramp is sudden and unintentional. In healthy patients they are random, but those suffering from ailments such as calciphylaxis or kidney disease, occur when there is not enough minerals or too much calcium in the bloodstream. Your muscles need the right amount of blood and oxygen to work properly. If you are on dialysis or if you have another form of kidney disease that is paired with constant cramps you may have an underlying condition such as calciphylaxis.

Muscle cramps are a classic symptom of calciphylaxis, which is basically a buildup of calcium in the bloodstream. Cramping in calciphylaxis patients can also be caused by medications used to treat other related conditions or even due to the side effects of dialysis.

Most calciphylaxis patients often develop skin lesions which can also lead to infection and cramping in the limbs.

7. Hyperparathyroidism

Calciphylaxis is a condition that is commonly seen in those suffering from illnesses that involve the kidney. The kidney is tasked with filtering the blood and when it is not able to do that, it can wreak havoc on the rest of the body. The parathyroid glands secrete a hormone into the blood, when they become overactive it causes the amount of calcium in the bloodstream to increase excessively.

The presence of hyperparathyroidism is a very common symptom of calciphylaxis, which is a condition that develops as a result of too much calcium in the blood. Though most people who suffer from calciphylaxis also have some form of kidney malfunction, not all do.

Hyperparathyroidism causes an increase in the hormone PTH, but the condition can be controlled with medication or surgery. These treatments are most effective in patients who are not suffering from kidney conditions even if calciphylaxis has developed.

8. Body Aches

People suffering from body aches may not automatically suspect calciphylaxis although it is one of the most common symptoms of the condition. Pain can originate from a variety of ailments, and from different points on the body. Sometimes body aches can originate from purely physical components, on the other hand, body aches can more complex with a mental variant. Another instance that could trigger body aches would be for persons who are suffering from calciphylaxis, renal failure, or kidneys disease.

Weakened joints and muscles coupled with constant infections can cause a body-wide ache that is not easily remedied. Patients suffering from calciphylaxis can also feel aches and pains due to the buildup of calcium in the blood and the lower than optimal kidney function that the disease causes.

Your body needs a balanced mix of blood, oxygen, and nutrients in order for your muscles and bones to work efficiently. When this is disrupted, it can be painful and debilitating in many cases.
