Synovitis is also known as synovial inflammation. This ailment develops when the synovium portion of a joint in your body becomes swollen. In your joints, the synovium is an essential piece of connective tissue that pads the capsule of your joints. The capsules of your joints resemble a bubble that surrounds the joint bone. The articular capsule covers joints on the wrist, elbow, knee, ankle, foot and all other joints in your body.

There are two layers, one being the soft inside named the synovium and the other being the sturdy outer layer named the fibrous stratum. There is a fluid that resides in between both layers that are called synovial fluid. This fluid helps to keep the joints moist and lubricated.

Synovial fluid is highly viscous which reduces the amount of friction imposed on articular cartilage when the joint is moved. When this fluid is not present or is in low supply, it can trigger synovitis.

1. Arthralgia

One of the most common symptoms of synovitis is joint paint. Even when the joint appears normal from the outside, or if there is no sign of injury the pain can be extreme. Swelling most often accompanies synovitis, which results in pain, however, arthralgia can develop in absence of visual swelling. Synovitis can develop in any or all joints in the body and arthralgia caused by the condition is usually short term. In most instances, arthralgia will occur in one joint for a short period of time and then resolve, only to come back in a different location.

There are many causes of synovitis, but when it develops as a result of repetitive stress or joint overuse, arthralgia flare-ups tend to be centered on the affected joints. Though pain is a normal symptom of synovitis, arthralgia is the specific pain in the joint along, not the surrounding tissues.

2. Pain

Pain is one of the easiest ways to understand there is something wrong. When it comes to synovitis, pain is a key symptom that is also the most common. Every so often, synovitis will merely cause mild discomfort in the joint. Generally, when a joint is damaged or swollen, there will be some amount of pain experienced. Severe cases of synovitis will cause intense pain that makes moving the injured area almost impossible.

Severe pain from synovitis can develop when pressure is placed on the swelling in the area of the joint, or on the joint itself. With synovitis, chronic pain in all joints in the body is common and tends to increase or decrease randomly. Pain from synovitis can also increase in severity if the cause of the synovitis is left untreated.

Often, a person who suffers synovitis may continue to work or play through the pain not realizing that the joint and tissues have suffered serious damage.

3. Inflammation

Inflammation can often be painful, so much so that it affects your ability to complete even simple tasks. Inflammation can be caused by of variety of factors and also contributes to several subsequent maladies such as; diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, fibromyalgia, and many others. Inflammation is one of the most common symptoms of synovitis though it may also be caused by other similar conditions.

Modern medicine has come up with several effective treatments for inflammation, but in many cases, the side effects or drug interactions are less than desirable. Thankfully, there are plenty of holistic ways to treat synovitis and other forms of inflammation.

The advantage of treating inflammation from synovitis the natural way is that it helps improve your overall health as well as reduces the concentration of toxins in your body. Synovitis affects people of all ages and all ethnicities. Synovitis pain can also be managed with topical solutions.

4. Difficulty moving the joint

One common symptom of synovitis is the inability of the joint to bear weight. If the synovitis is in the lower extremities, it may be hard or impossible to bear down on the joints of the affected leg or foot. For synovitis on the joints of the upper extremities, it may be difficult or impossible to lift any weight or to place any weight on the arms, wrist or hands. If you have this symptom, chance are you are suffering from synovitis.

When there is not enough lubrication between the bone and the joints, it can cause intense amounts of pain that can inhibit movement. In severe cases, such as with gout, the joint can exhibit so much swelling that any movement at all is restricted.

Depending on the cause and the overall severity of synovitis, they may be treatments to help reduce the symptoms and restore mobility to the joint.

5. Swelling

When it comes to synovitis, one of the most widely seen symptoms is swelling in the affected joints. The fluid and tissues in the joints become inflamed which can lead to swelling. Trauma and swelling from synovitis also will cause the area to experience pain. The swelling from synovitis can be exacerbated if a person continues to apply pressure or use the affected joint. This swelling in the joint and around the joints are the most notable symptoms of synovitis.

Anytime there is an injury to the body, it can cause a release of fluids into the soft tissue which will make it swell. This includes damage to the tissues of the joint due to synovitis, or irritation caused by synovitis. Swelling is a common symptom present in several medical conditions, but if there are other related conditions such as TB, arthritis, or lupus, it is likely that synovitis is also present.

6. Excess Synovial fluid

A key symptom of synovitis is the presence of excess synovial fluid. When the synovial membrane that is located inside of the joints gets irritated or inflamed, it may trigger the production of extra synovial fluid. This extra fluid is generated as the body attempts to ease the irritation, but in most cases it simply causes swelling.

This swelling causes synovitis to worsen and helps with the perpetuation of joint inflammation. If you have ever heard of a doctor or relative mention water on the knee, they are referring to the extra joint fluid that is caused by synovitis.

This fluid can build up in any joint in the body, not only the knee joints. If you notice extra swelling around your wrist, knees, shoulder, ankles or other joints, you should probably have them checked for synovitis. Most joints that are swollen with extra fluid due to synovitis also develop noticeable pain.

7. Joint stiffness

There are many causes of synovitis which may make identifying the symptom joint stiffens difficult. Many ailments such as repetitive stress, arthritis, and even lupus can cause stiff joints. Most cases of synovitis also present with swelling and pain which can cause joint stiffness. People who have synovitis that is left untreated for an extended period of time may suffer permanent damage to the joint which will lead to stiffness of the joint.

There are times when synovitis is caused by an autoimmune condition such as rheumatoid arthritis. This condition, in particular, causes joint stiffness and swelling. The area around the joint may feel warm even if it doesn’t exhibit any swelling.

The joint may also experience and increased blood flow as a result of synovitis brought on by an autoimmune condition. This may cause the area to feel soggy or tight which further adds to the stiffness of the affected joint.

8. Localized heat & compressed blood vessels

Synovitis has a wide range of symptoms that are also common in other conditions. These can range from hardly noticeable tenderness to extremely debilitating such as the inability to move a joint Synovitis is most common in patients who are suffering from other ailments that involved the joints or the immune systems. Synovitis can cause swelling which may compress blood vessel and nerves around the affected joint.

In some cases, people suffering from synovitis will notice that the skin and muscles around their joints may feel warm to the touch. This is due to the increasing flow of blood to the injured areas paired with swelling that can occur.

The heat tends to only radiate around the joint but not extend to the surrounding muscle tissues. Compressed blood vessels due to swelling from synovitis can be painful depending on the location and the severity.
