The fibula is one of the long bones on the lower part of the leg. The fibula is also known as the calf bone. It is located on the outside of the leg. It is just a small bone. When there is a fibula fracture, the bone of the fibula becomes broken. Hight impact movements, such as landing hard on the legs after jumping high or getting hit hard on the lower part of the leg can cause a fracture. Spraining or rolling on the ankle can cause a fracture to the fibula.

When this happens, stress is placed on the fibula bone. Fibula fractures are common in sports that involve jumping, changing directions quickly, and running. Some sports that can cause a fibula fracture are football, soccer, and basketball. When you have a fibula fracture there are symptoms to look out for.

There are eight known symptoms of a fibula fracture.

1. Pain is a known symptom that you will experience when you have a fibula fracture.

The pain will be felt in the outside of the leg and ankle. When it first happens, a person may not pay any attention to it and continue playing on the leg. It will continue to get worse and the pain will become intense. If this happens while playing sports, you’ll need to get immediate treatment right away. You can’t continue to play.

Some players like to continue playing and they end up making the fracture worse. Their coaches will allow them to play while the player is experiencing pain. One more hit will send the person to the ground and he or she won’t be able to walk for some time.

A doctor needs to take imaging tests to see how severe the fracture is. If it’s not too bad antibiotics will be given along with a tetanus shot.

2. Swelling is another known symptom of a fibula fracture.

The more you use the ankle and leg it will become swollen. The only way to get rid of the swelling until you’re able to see a doctor is with ice, over-the-counter pain relievers, and rest. It is not a good idea to be tempted to try to walk on it. The swelling and pain will get worse. The more you walk on the fracture, the worse it will get. It will take longer for the fracture to heal once you’re able to get treatment.

The doctor may have to realign the bone without having surgery. While it’s healing, you shouldn’t walk on it. Use a crutch or wheelchair. A cast will be placed on the injured leg. The doctor will tell you when you can use your leg again. It takes time, but you will be back playing again.

3. Inability to bear weight on the leg is a known symptom.

The fibula bone is broken, so any weight placed on it, will end up making you fall. If you try to place weight on the injury, it will be painful as well. During this time, the best thing to do is to use crutches until the doctor can give you an examination.

The examination needs to be done as soon as possible. If the fibula bone is broken badly, screws will need to be put into place. While it’s healing, you will have to go to physical therapy. This will allow your leg to become stronger.

At physical therapy strengthening exercises will be done. It will be painful when doing the exercises, but the more you do them, the pain will go away. It will take months before you can get back to using your leg. Even if the doctor says it’s healed, you need to wait a little longer to prevent further injury.

4. Tenderness feeling when you have a fibula fracture is common.

Whenever you or someone tries to touch it, you will experience pain. Even a light touch can cause pain. The only way a doctor can touch the injury is by giving you pain medication. Once the pain medicine starts working, the doctor can touch it to figure out where the injury is located. After a thorough examination, the doctor will be able to tell how much damage has been done.

The type of treatment will be discussed as well. Most high impact injuries can be healed without surgery. Pain medication, antibiotics, and a tetanus shot are a few things that will be given. A cast will be placed on the injury and needs to stay in place until the fibula completely heals. Even if feels better to you, don’t walk on it, unless your physical therapist tells you can.

5. Bleeding or bruising in the leg is another known symptom of a fibula fracture.

When the doctor takes an X-ray, he or she will notice that there’s bleeding or bruising. The doctor has to try to stop the bleeding because you can lose too much blood. This can cause death. IV fluids are administered or blood transfusions to increase blood pressure in the emergency room. The injured will need to stay in the hospital until bleeding and bruising goes away. That’s why it’s important to seek medical treatment right away when leg pain is felt. It may be more serious than you think.

The injury won’t go away on its own. The longer you wait to seek treatment, the worse it will become. You won’t be able to play your sport ever again, especially if there is internal bleeding. The bleeding and bruising can go away with the right treatment.

6. Numbness and coldness in the foot are felt when you have a fibula fracture.

The reason the numbness and cold feeling is felt because the blood isn’t circulating to that part of the body. In the meantime, you can wear warm socks to see if it helps. Since there is an injury to the fibula, the numbness and cold feeling won’t away. Along with the other treatments the doctor will suggest, you may have to get heat therapy to get rid of the cold feeling.

A lot of the times once the right medicine is given the symptom will start to go away. The rest of the leg is still needed. By trying to walk on it, the numbness will come back. Elevating the foot is a good idea. The blood will be able to circulate to the foot. If you can, keep socks on the injured foot. It may hurt when anything is placed on the foot.

7. The visible deformity is a known symptom.

The bone in the leg will be of a different shape. The doctor who conducts the X-ray will notice it and may suggest putting screws or plates to help correct the deformity. It will help the person if a cast and crutches were used. By placing a cast on the injury, it won’t look unsightly to you or other people. The cast will also help to correct the deformity. It is painful when there is a deformity. There may be swelling as well.

Once the fibula heals, the person may be limited to how much pressure can be placed on it. You don’t want to do the same high impact activity you did before the injury.

Sometimes doctors may suggest not to put too much pressure on the fibula, especially if plates and screws are in place. In physical therapy, the physical therapist will get you to do strengthening exercises.

8. A limited range of motion in knee or ankle area is a known symptom of a fibula fracture.

When you try to bear weight on the leg, your ankle or knee will give out. You won’t be able to walk long distances for too long. Whenever pressure is placed on the knee or ankle, the pain will be felt. It is best to rest the leg as much as possible.

Crutches will prevent you from using your ankle or knee. Physical therapy will help a lot because the more strengthening exercises you do, the stronger your knee and ankle will become. A walking boot will also help to keep pressure off of the knee and ankle area.

You may not want to drive because you’ll need to use your ankle and knees. The more you bend both, the pain will be felt. Plus you have to get in and out of the car.
