A femur fracture occurs when there is a crack, break, or crush of the thigh bone. It can also be called a hip fracture or broken hip, especially if the injury is in the upper area of the hip. Femur fractures that are not serious, do not require surgery. When surgery isn’t needed, there are things you can do at home to relieve the pain.

Most of the things that you will need for the home remedies can be found in your cupboard. If you need to buy something, it is a small cost. It is nothing that will break the bank. Even though you can treat a femur fracture at home, you should still go to the doctor to make sure it’s nothing serious.

Once you get home, you can start the process of healing the fracture, so you can get back to doing your normal daily activities. Here are eight home remedies to relieve femur fracture.

1. Rest is a home remedy that needs to be done to relieve femur fracture.

Rest means that you need to stop any activity that you’re doing for at least 24 to 48 hours. Others say to rest for a week to see how the femur fracture. If it is still giving you problems, continue to rest. It may be tempting to try out the force yourself to get better, but you’ll make the injury worse. In order to be certain that you don’t put any pressure on the fracture, you should use crutches or a wheelchair.

When you need to get up to do something, like taking a shower or sitting in a chair, ask for assistance. If you take your time, you won’t feel as much pain when you sit down. Even in the wheelchair, you’ll need assistance. It may be frustrating at first, but that’s the only way to heal the fracture.

2. Icing the femur fracture is another home remedy.

Place the ice on the area where you’re feeling pain. By doing this, it will reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation. It doesn’t matter what you use when it comes to icing. You can use a plastic bag and place ice cubes in it or even a bag of frozen peas. Make sure that you place a towel over the area before placing the ice on the area. It will irritate the skin if you don’t.

This can be done several times a day for 10 to 15 minutes. It is a good idea to do this every hour, especially if the pain is intense. The area that you’re placing the ice will feel numb afterward. With a fracture, it’s not a good idea to use a heat pack, unless the doctor tells you to. This is a joint injury and it needs a cold therapy.

3. Compressing the femur fracture is a home remedy you need to try.

With compression, you will place a thick bandage around the hip and pelvis. Make sure the bandage isn’t tight because it will cause more pain. The bandage can stay in the area for days or a week at the most. The only time you will need to take it off is when bathing. You may want someone to assist you when placing the bandage on. Compressing helps to get rid of swelling.

Once the swelling goes away, you can remove it. It also prevents you from moving it. It will feel awkward trying to move it with a bandage on your pelvis and hip area. By not replacing the bandage it can cause an infection because germs will accumulate underneath it.

Even if you wash the area on a daily basis, the bandage has become old and dirty.

4. Elevating is a home remedy to relieve a femur fracture.

It will reduce pain and swelling. It is difficult to elevate a hip, but it can be done. The only way it can be done is by reclining your feet up, so that your hip is elevated. This should be done every time you are sitting down. Even if you’re using a wheelchair, you’ll need to keep it elevated. Place a couple of pillows underneath the hip and foot to make it more comfortable.

Young adults who attend school can elevate their foot in a chair with pillows underneath. When the person has to get up, someone will assist him or her. Don’t try to take the foot off of the chair by yourself because you’ll start to feel pain your hip. At work, this may not be able to be done because it may be uncomfortable, especially if you have an office job.

5. Take over-the-counter pain relievers to relieve femur fracture is a good home remedy.

Over-the-counter pain relievers include Motrin and Tylenol. They come in different strengths. It is a good idea to take the strongest formula. Over-the-counter pain relievers help with swelling, inflammation, and pain. It is important to only take them as directed. Don’t take more just because the pain is intense. Some pain medications make one drowsy.

So, it’s a good idea to stay home when you take them. You won’t be able to drive at this time, so it won’t affect you too much if you’re going out. It will be best to sit in the car because you don’t want to go to a place of business and fall because you’re drowsy. Even if you’re in a wheelchair, if you’re medicated enough, you could fall out of it and injure your hip more and other parts of your body.

6. Stretching can relieve a femur fracture.

When stretching it shouldn’t be where you’re experiencing pain. It should be enough of a stretch where no pain is felt. One good stretch you can do after walking for a few minutes is standing with your right hip to the wall.

Place your right hand against the wall with your elbow slightly bent. Cross left leg over the right with it slightly bent. Move your right hip slowly towards the wall and hold the stretch for a few seconds. Don’t bounce when doing this stretch. Repeat this stretch a few times. Make sure to stretch on the other side too. Another stretch for your hips is the butterfly stretch.

Take your time getting onto the floor and place the soles of your feet together. Slowly bring your heels are close to your body as you can. Don’t force it because you’ll experience pain. Lean forward as much as you can.

7. Applying analgesic ointment to the femur fracture is a home remedy to try.

The topical analgesic ointment can be messy, but it works for the pain. Apply a thin layer over the hip area that is experiencing pain. Rub it in gently onto clean skin until it disappears. Wash your hands after using it. Each time you use the ointment, clean the area. It won’t work as well if you don’t. Make sure to get the cold formula of analgesic cream.

Heat cream won’t work on a femur fracture because the joints are the ones that are injured. Apply the cream up to four times a day. You may want to spread out the time that you apply it so that when you go to bed, you won’t have to deal with any pain. Don’t cover the hip area when using the cream. The cream may get onto the bandage and prevent it from working.

8. Walking can help relieve a femur fracture. When walking, walk slowly on a flat surface.

Walk for five to 10 minutes. Since you have injured your femur, you don’t want to spend too much time on it. Walking can be done every day or when you feel like it. If you’re experiencing pain one day, don’t walk. Don’t force yourself to walk when you’re experiencing pain. The pain will be intense after the walk. Walking can also be done in a shallow pool. This is the best form of walking if you can get to a pool.

Take your time when in the pool. If you need assistance while in the pool, there should be someone around to help you. You may need assistance getting in and out of the pool since you have a femur fracture. Don’t think about diving into the pool. You’ll end up experiencing pain and need someone to help you to get out of the pool.
