Farsightedness is a relatively common eye condition that can affect people of all ages. Many children even have farsightedness and thus may have crossed eyes as a result. The official medical term that eye doctors use to refer to farsightedness is hyperopia but for the sake of simplicity, we’re going to refer to it as farsightedness for most of this article.

There’s no need to overcomplicate a simple condition, after all. There are quite a few symptoms that could present itself as a result of the hyperopia and today we’re going to go through eight of the most common ones. You might be wondering why you’d even need to know about all these symptoms but they can actually help you detect the problem early and thus get more effective treatment.

1. Blurry vision for close objects

The first symptom that you might notice if you’re dealing with farsightedness would be blurry vision that only occurs when you’re trying to look at objects that are close to you. Anything at a distance may seem clear as crystal to your eyes, but once it gets increasingly nearer you start to find the image more blurry.

It’s worth noting that there are many other eye conditions that may make an image blurry, but only farsightedness will cause an image to be blurry or clear depending on the distance. This is why standard eye exams have you read a chart from different distances so that the eye doctor can determine whether or not you’re dealing with farsightedness. This is also very easy to test yourself by having a friend stand near, then close, and seeing which distance appears clearer to you.

2. Squinting

Squinting is another common symptom that people notice when they’re dealing with an eye problem. Various things can lead to squinting, but at its base, it’s an effort by your eyes to focus incoming light so that it can perceive the image as less blurry. While there are many ocular conditions that could lead to this squinting, the easiest way to determine whether or not it’s the result of farsightedness is by checking to see if it only occurs when you’re reading or looking at other objects that are close to you.

If you don’t have to squint for objects that are far away but consciously — or even subconsciously — start squinting when something is up close then your squinting may actually be a symptom of farsightedness. If you suspect that this is the case then you should go for an eye exam so that a qualified eye doctor can confirm your suspicions.

3. Burning sensation

A burning sensation around your eyes may also develop if you’re suffering from farsightedness. Much like some of the other symptoms on this list, burning sensations around the eyes aren’t limited to hyperopia can also develop due to various other ocular conditions. However, much like with squinting, burning sensations will often occur when you’re looking at close objects versus looking at objects that are further away.

Also, you’ll find that the burning sensation might be centered around the cornea rather than the other areas of your eyes. This is due to the fact that hyperopia is a corneal condition. If your cornea is unable to focus images due to your farsightedness then it may start to feel strained and thus lead to a burning sensation. There are also some serious eye conditions that could lead to this burning feeling which is why you should go for an eye exam rather than shrugging it off.

4. Eye aches

Beyond a burning sensation, you might also suffer from eye aches if you’re reading or looking at other close objects. If you notice these eye aches occurring even when you’re looking at something far away then you’re likely dealing with an ocular condition not related to farsightedness. That being said, if only closeup objects cause the eye aches then it may, in fact, be a symptom of hyperopia.

These eye aches can vary in intensity from one patient to the next, but they generally get more severe over time especially if the patient continues to read despite feeling the eye ache. If you notice an eye ache then give your eyes a break and see if it dissipates. Patients who suffer from farsightedness often report that closing their eyes for a few minutes and/or refraining from reading makes these eye aches go away.

5. Headaches

Headaches can be caused by many things, and it doesn’t necessarily have to be a symptom of an ocular condition. However, if you only get headaches while reading then this may be a symptom of farsightedness. This is the symptom that can be most impactful for patients, especially students. Doing well in school relies on one’s ability to read a lot of material, memorize it, then recall the information during an exam.

If patients who have farsightedness can’t read for long periods of time and have to take a break every few minutes then their grades will drop. Fortunately, getting reading glasses to offset the farsightedness will often make it easier for students to study by minimizing or even preventing this symptom. While annoying, headaches during reading are actually one of the most commonly used symptoms to diagnose farsightedness, showing that even the biggest nuisance can serve a purpose.

6. Strabismus

Strabismus? We know, it sounds like a funny word that you’d get if you combined a metallic alloy with an expensive violin. That being said, this term has nothing to do with bismuth nor Stradivarius violins but is actually the word that eye doctors and other medical professionals use to describe crossed eyes. Before we move forward, it’s worth noting that strabismus usually only occurs in children who have severe and untreated cases of hyperopia.

It occurs because their eyes try to compensate for the blurred vision by facing one direction dominantly. Glasses usually correct this, but in some rare cases where the symptom doesn’t subside, surgery on the eye muscles may be performed. There are other conditions that could lead to strabismus but if your child suffers from it while also experiencing other symptoms then it may be de to farsightedness. Taking them to an eye doctor will ensure you get a proper diagnosis.

7. Fatigue

Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms, period. Whether your condition originates in the lungs, blood, eyes, or arteries, you’ll likely be faced with some degree of fatigue as a result. This rule holds true for farsightedness. Whiley ou may experience fatigue due to impaired airflow in cases of tuberculosis, you can also experience fatigue due to impaired visual perception in cases of farsightedness.

When you’re suffering from hyperopia, your eyes and brain have to put in more energy to process images that are close to you. This is especially true if you’re a heavy reader. All this work trying to process the blurred images can fatigue both your eyes and your brain making you feel tired after only reading a few pages. If you notice excessive fatigue after reading then it may be a symptom of farsightedness.

8. Earlier need for glasses

The last symptom that we’re going to go over here may seem strange to you but bear with us. While you might be surprised to hear that farsightedness can lead to an earlier need for glasses, we assure you that this is the case. The average age that men need glasses is generally around the age of 40 and up. There are some factors such as genetics that can influence this age, but 40 is the average. Those who have hyperopia will be straining their eyes more whenever they try to rea or look at close objects.

These decades of straining their eyes can make it deteriorate faster than average and thus lead to an earlier need for reading glasses. In fact, an overwhelming majority of men below the age of 40 who already have glasses also suffer from hyperopia. Many studies have been conducted that appear to confirm the correlation between farsightedness and early use of glasses. That being said, if you aren’t a fan of how glasses look, you could always use contacts.
