Foot injuries are quite common and among those the most often experienced is a broken toe. The small bones of the toes are called phalanges. Your foot has 26 bones in all, 14 of those being phalanges. With so many small targets, it makes sense that you will break at least one toe in your lifetime. When there is trauma to the foot, most often one or more toe bones will break. This can be caused by something as simple as a dropped heavy object or even kicking a ball at the wrong angle during sports play.

Trauma is not the only way your bones can break. Prolonged repetitive movements can also cause stress fractures in your bones or even hairline fractures. You may think that this only happens with the hands or arms, but your toes can also suffer the same type of injury due to prolonged repetitive movements.

1. Blunt force trauma

Breaking a bone can occur in an endless number of ways. Broken toes, on the other hand, are most often caused by direct trauma to the foot. This can be in the form of someone hitting the foot with a hard object or running into something hard that causes a break. Breaks, fractures, sprains and tendon damage caused by sporting activity or accidents are routinely treated with a combination of medication and physical therapy.

The treatment choice depends on the severity of the injury or toe break. Physical violence is also a standard source of toe fractures. Assaults with fists, feet, or objects are causes of minor damage such as black eyes, and bruising to major damage such as broken noses and jaws, even major damage such as broken eye sockets, which can result in blindness.

Using the feet as a weapon either in street fights or in organized fights such as MMA can also result in frequently broken toes.

2. Disease

Osteoporosis causes the bones to become less dense, and although it can actually occur to almost everyone, regardless of age or sex, it most often occurs in women more than 50 years of age. One of the major problems with osteoporosis is that it usually isn’t discovered until a bone is fractured or broken. When you have weak bone, even wearing the wrong footwear can result in a broken toe. Bone loss in your jawbones can signal problems with bones in other parts of your body.

Get your calcium every day! If you cannot get enough through diet, take calcium supplements. Women need 1,200mg and men 800mg daily. Both sexes which are over the age of 65 need at least 1,500mg each and every day.

If you know that you are at risk of breaking your toes due to calcium deficiencies or other diseases, you should make sure to wear safety footwear to avoid breaking your toes.

3. Car Accidents

Motor vehicle accidents are the most frequent cause of broken toes and feet in most first world countries. Even with the development and use of seatbelts, car accidents continue to be the regular cause of trauma to the toes and feet. Usually, this type of trauma happens when the foot strikes a piece of the interior of the vehicle, such as the steering wheel, wheel well or dashboard.

Trauma to the toes and broken toes can also happen when an object inside the car becomes a flying projectile during the collision, striking passengers on their lower extremities. Car accidents that result in a rider being ejected from the car often result in broken legs and toes.

Side on and head-on accidents that affect the lower portion of the car or the doors can also crush the area where the feet are located, causing broken toes and feet. There is no way to anticipate a car accident, but safe driving is advised.

4. Prolonged repetitive movements

Sports injuries are the third most common source of broken toes. Strikes to the feet with playing balls or playing instruments such as baseball bats, hockey sticks, and golf clubs can cause considerable damage. Other everyday sports injuries that can cause broken toes are falling over hurdles, running into goal posts or tumbling over stadium seats while trying to capture a ball. Even without direct trauma, there are certain activities that can cause broken toes when performed repetitively. These types of breaks are designated as stress fractures and hairline fractures.

In most cases, these types of broken toes are caused by actions such as overusing the feet or toes. Ballerinas and long-distance runners are good examples of athletes that commonly experience broken toes due to prolonged repetitive movements.

Even in sports that are not foot intensive, stress fractures can occur. Small cracks formed by repetitive force or overuse and toe bones weakened by a condition are more prone to stress breaks

5. Work-related & regular accidents

Accidents around the home and yard such as falls, running into stationary objects such as sliding glass doors and light poles are another principal cause of broken toes. Babies and children can even be a cause of this. Whether your toddler is hurling their bottle at your face causing you to trip over the stairs or your pre-teen hits your with an ice ball which makes you twist your foot the wrong way, home mishaps wreak their share of damage on the toes.

Industrial accidents are contributory causes of broken toes. Whether the fault of the machine or the fault of the operator, hospitals report accidents that cause toe and foot trauma as one of the most common causes they see, usually resulting in the need for sutures, bandaging, or sometimes even surgery.

The best way to prevent broken toes in the workplace or at home is to wear sturdy footwear and walk carefully.

6. Animal accidents or attacks

Whether you are running from an attacking animal or you fell off your horse, animals are capable of causing serious injuries. Occasionally it’s not the animal that actually caused the trauma, but in a fall from the escape attempt. Horses can do great harm with a kick or even a tossing of their large, heavy heads if they happen to knock you off your feet. Even the family dog can bring about severe bruising, broken toes and bones from too much rough play.

Gregarious animals can be the cause of broken toes simply by falling on your feet the wrong way, or tripping over them as you go about your day. Wild animals or unknown animals can also cause you to break your toes.

Often, when a dog attacks a person they will try to defend themselves by kicking the animal. In some cases, a well-placed kick can result in a broken toe, or the dog may bite the foot breaking one or several toes in the process.

7. Falls

No matter what age you may be falling down can be painful, in some cases, it can even cause you to break your bones. Tripping over hard objects or even twisting your feet awkwardly can result in broken toes. Jumping from even a moderately elevated location can also cause broken toes if you land improperly. The bones in your feet are very compact and numerous. They are made to help you balance, walk and run.

While it may seem that these little digits are stronger than they seem, they are not in fact made to handle heavy amounts of weight. It only takes five pounds of pressure to break most bones in your body, however, the threshold for your toes is much less.

When you fall and land on your toes, the entire weight of your body is compressed into those small bones. Sometimes the pressure is simply too much which results in broken toes.

8. Missteps

As silly as it may sound, simply walking can result in a broken toe. As odd as it may sound, putting the weight down on the wrong spot or stepping oddly can result in a painful broken toe. Broken toes caused by bumping your feet into heavy pieces of furniture are also common. Taking a wrong step while going down the stairs or while opening a door can also cause a broken toe in many cases.

Most broken toes can be treated at home using the buddy taping system. If the big toe is fractured or if there are several toes broken, surgery may be required to set the bones. Toes as pretty small and as a result heal much more rapidly than other bones in your body.

If the bone has only a single fracture, it will heal within four to six weeks. Make sure to keep weight off the injured foot to ensure the toe heals properly.
