""

Difficulty swallowing occurs when the esophagus becomes damaged or the muscles and nerves that control swallowing are functioning poorly. There can also be a blockage in the esophagus, which is making it difficult to swallow. It will hurt when you try to swallow. Since it’s painful, it may cause you to not want to eat. This can cause other issues to occur in your body, such as weight loss. When it comes to finding out what is causing the difficulty in swallowing, there are a number of reasons why it’s happening. Some reasons you can’t help, while others are simple.

Certain things that we do to our bodies could trigger our inability to swallow. Once you know what is causing the issue, it’ll be easier for you to swallow. Sometimes it is things you can do at home, while others need to be treated by a medical professional.

Here are eight frequent causes of difficulty swallowing.

1. Taking large bites of food is a frequent cause of difficulty swallowing.

When you are hungry it’s normal for some to take large bites. It can make you choke and difficult for the food to go down. In order to get the food down your throat, you’ll have to drink some water, but a lot of the times water doesn’t do any good. You may end up vomiting. At the same time while you are trying to get the food down your throat, it will be painful. Your throat will become sore and when you try to eat some more food, it’ll hurt.

It is a good idea to take your time when eating, even if you’re hungry. Each time you take a bite to eat, drink some water. By drinking water, you’ll get full quicker. It may be a good idea to cut your food into smaller pieces when eating.

""

2. Inadequate chewing can cause frequent difficulty swallowing.

Most people will take large bites of food and try to swallow. The food will become difficult to go down the throat. In fact, it will be painful. Even if you drink water, it will still be painful. It is best to chew your food slowly. When you chew your food, you’ll get full quicker. You can enjoy the food as well when you chew it. For instance, when you are eating a sandwich, take small bites and chew.

Chewing takes time, but you will avoid choking. Even when drinking water, take a sip. By not taking your time, the food will come back up. Even when you’re in a hurry, take your time and chew your food. When you’re late for an appointment this can cause you to eat as fast as you can without taking the time to chew your food.

""

3. Dry mouth can cause difficulty swallowing.

Your saliva allows your food to move out of your mouth and through the esophagus. Many people have a dry mouth when they take certain medicines. Certain medicines have side effects that are out of our control. When you have a dry mouth, it is good to suck on candy or use a dry mouth rinse. Drinking water will help a dry mouth as well. Caffeine isn’t going to help a dry mouth.

Other health issues can cause a dry mouth. Remind your doctor if you are having this problem because he or she can conduct tests to see what health problems you are having. The same thing when it comes to medications.

The doctor can find other medications that won’t cause a dry mouth. It’ll become easier for you to swallow once the problem is dealt with. Don’t take too many over-the-counter medicines for dry mouth until you speak with your doctor.

""

4. Pills are a frequent cause of difficulty swallowing.

Different pills you take have side effects. You have to keep the doctor informed on what pills you are taking and what side effects you are having. Even over-the-counter medications can cause you to not be able to swallow. That’s why you have to be careful when using over-the-counter medications. A lot of medicines won’t agree with your body.

Another reason pills may cause you to not be able to swallow is the size of them. Some doctors prescribe huge pills and in order for them to work, you have to make them whole. The more times you take the pills, it will cause pain. What happens is anytime you put anything down your throat it will cause pain.

It is a good idea to ask your doctor to change your medication where the pills are smaller and easier to swallow.

""

5. Hot foods can cause difficulty swallowing.

Hot foods can burn your throat and over time, make it difficult to swallow. Even spicy foods and seasonings will have the same effect. It is a good idea to let the food get warm before eating it. It doesn’t have to be cold. Avoid adding hot sauce or any spicy seasonings on your food. Even though, you’re letting the food cool a bit, adding spicy ingredients will have the same effect.

Most people believe if they drink water after eating hot foods, it will be okay, but it can make it worse. Your throat will remain hot for a while. The hot feeling in your throat will eventually go away, but the next time you eat, you need to be more careful. Just because the hot feeling went away doesn’t mean it can’t happen again.

Over time, it’ll be difficult to swallow even if you don’t put spicy ingredients on your food.

""

6. Foreign bodies are a frequent cause of having a difficult time swallowing.

When we eat food, especially when we take big bites, food can become lodged in the esophagus and throat. Even older adults with dentures. They may not chew their food and the food becomes stuck. When the food becomes stuck in the throat and esophagus, it can cause vomiting. It is important to chew your food when you eat. Don’t take big bites.

It is best to cut your food into smaller pieces and chew the food slowly. After chewing the food, take a sip of water. This will allow the food to go down your throat and esophagus. It may be better if you choose different foods to eat, such as tuna salad or applesauce for example. These are soft in texture and easier to get down the throat and esophagus. You will still want to take your time to eat.

""

7. Cancer can cause a person to have a difficult time swallowing.

Cancer will spread to other parts of the body, such as the throat. When this happens, it will become difficult to swallow. Radiation and chemotherapy can cause a person to have a difficult time swallowing.

A lot of times, these therapies have side effects that can make things worse in the body. That’s why a lot of the times people refuse therapy because they know what can happen. When a cancer patient has a difficult time swallowing, he or she won’t be able to eat.

They may have already lost a significant amount of weight by having cancer, but more weight will be lost by not eating. Doctors can prescribe oral medications that can help with a person’s appetite, but it still won’t help the person to swallow. To start off, it may be helpful to drink some broth.

""

8. Achalasia is another frequent cause of difficulty swallowing.

The lower esophageal muscles are unable to relax, which causes the inability to swallow. Food is unable to enter the stomach, which causes the food to come back up. The muscles in the wall of the esophagus can be weak and it will become worse over time.

It is important to allow a medical professional to look at your esophagus by taking an imaging test. The imaging test will allow the doctor to see what is going on and how he or she can fix it. the doctor may require to take medication that could help with the issue with your esophagus.

If it gets worse, the only other option may be surgery to correct the problem. Most doctors will try one option first before thinking about surgery. If surgery is needed, it is best to do it because you won’t be able to eat.

""

9. Lymph node swelling can cause difficulty swallowing.

Lymph nodes are located everywhere throughout the body, from behind the ears and in the neck through to under the armpits and in the inner thigh. The body’s varying network of lymph nodes works to act as the body’s “traps” for any foreign bodies in the blood – and if you have an illness or infection raging in your body, one of the first ways in which your body will react is to counteract with swelling of these nodes.

While it is a useful mechanism by the body that attempts to rid it of infection, swelling of the nodes can be associated with many of its own health issues.

One of the most common issues that you are likely to experience with swollen lymph nodes is difficulty swallowing and impaired mobility of the neck where swelling becomes more severe.

The best course of action for serious symptoms like these is to see your doctor for the proper tests.

""

10. Dental problems can sometimes cause difficulty swallowing.

There’s a very lucky few who can go their entire lives without experiencing any sign or symptom of dental problems or cavities, but the truth is that this just isn’t the case for most people out there. By the time most people reach their teens, it’s likely that they have already had to deal with cavities and toothache at least a few times.

Some health conditions like connective tissue disorders and exposure to some pathogens or chemicals can cause teeth to degrade faster than they would for everyone else.

Dental issues can cause many different symptoms including mouth ulcers, pain in the jaw and swelling. Sometimes the pain and swelling can spread.

Trouble swallowing is one of the most commonly experienced side-effects of dental problems and is likely to go together with ulcers or abscesses in the mouth.

See your dentist before these issues become larger problems or chronic conditions.

""

11. Allergic reactions can lead to difficulty swallowing.

Allergic reactions are common in many people, and the level of allergic reaction they display as well as what they’re displaying it too varies from person to person. Someone you know might have a severe allergy to peanuts, and you might have an allergy to pollen that comes around every change of the seasons – this is what people commonly refer to as hay fever.

Allergic reactions can happen through pathogens present in the air, or they can happen because of things that you consume.

The symptoms of most allergic reactions include itching, swelling of the throat and difficulty swallowing or breathing.

Sometimes allergic reactions can be treated with the simple use of anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine medication, though other times allergic reactions could require medical attention in the hospital to treat depending on the severity of the allergy.

Should you already know what your allergies are, take special care when buying food ingredients and when going to restaurants? If you haven’t identified your allergies yet, see a doctor or allergy specialist who can help.

""

12. Exposure to smoke

If you have been exposed to any kind of smoke through an accident, fire or other environmental causes such as where you work, then it could irritate various parts of the body like the ears, nose, and throat. Difficulty swallowing is likely to be one of the symptoms that you will experience for a few hours to days after exposure to smoke inhalation.

This happens because of the fact that smoke is a severe irritant. It will especially affect the mucous membranes like the eyes and throat.

It’s not just that kind of smoke that can irritate the body’s membranes. You can and should also consider cigarette smoking (whether secondhand or your own) a risk factor for developing trouble swallowing, and it might even lead to further health issues like an increased risk for mouth and lung cancer.

Visit the emergency room where you have been exposed to any smoke or other damaging inhalants.

""

13. Hyperventilation can cause a feeling of numbness in the throat.

Hyperventilation happens when the body’s breathing rate increases far beyond what’s normal for it. This can take place due to a variety of different circumstances including panic attacks, the use of certain types of medications and stimulants and other conditions that affect the heart.

When you experience hyperventilation, you are also likely to experience other symptoms like tingling and numbness, sweating and a racing heart rate at the same time.

The feeling associated with hyperventilation has been described by many people as being “light” as though it goes straight to their head, and can cause difficulty swallowing for the duration of the episode.

Contrary to popular belief, it’s never a good idea to breathe into a paper bag when you are hyperventilating. Instead of helping your condition, breathing into a plastic bag is only going to fill your veins with carbon dioxide and could make you feel worse or lose consciousness.

""

14. Vocal cord polyps can cause difficulty swallowing and discomfort.

Vocal polyps describe growths, usually noncancerous ones, that happen on the vocal folds. Even though they aren’t considered cancerous, this doesn’t mean that they’re harmless: There are still many different health effects and symptoms that can be associated with vocal cord polyps.

Even though vocal polyps are commonly identified in career singers whose voices take a lot of stress through everyday use (and many times overuse), they can be identified in anyone and there are several different factors that can put you at an added risk for developing them.

Some of the factors which might increase your risk include pollution and a family history of polyps, growths or cancers.

Sometimes the presence of vocal polyps will cause associated symptoms such as losing your voice for a short period of time or a change in your vocal range, but it might also cause difficulty swallowing in cases where swelling is advanced or where the polyps have turned cancerous.

See your doctor establish the state of the condition where a problem is suspected.

""

15. Difficulty swallowing could point to motor-neuron conditions.

If you experience any difficulty swallowing, numbness and full-body pains as chronic symptoms and doctors are struggling to find the cause through their first rounds of tests, in some cases it can point to certain motor-neuron conditions (like motor-neuron disease).

These health conditions are progressive, which means that the symptoms and degeneration associated with them often get worse over time.

The causes for many of these conditions can be hard to track down, but it’s believed that genetics plays a huge part in who will develop conditions like MND versus people who don’t.

If you suspect any serious health conditions in your family history, genetic testing can help you to establish what you might have running in the family.

If you start to experience any of the symptoms (including difficulty swallowing that can lead to an increased choking risk as the disease gets worse), see your doctor for the proper tests and diagnostics.
