An eye ulcer is when the outermost layer of the eye is inflamed, which results in pain. This is a rare condition in the United States. In fact, there are fewer than 200,000 cases reported each year. Some of the symptoms of an eye ulcer include redness of the eyes, blurry vision, and tearing of the eyes. The only way to get rid of an eye ulcer is by seeking treatment at a doctor’s office or emergency room. It needs to be treated right away because it could cause more problems for you later on.

Treatment for an eye ulcer includes antibiotics, antiviral, or antibacterial medicine. An eye patch will need to be worn when the eye ulcer isn’t infectious. In some cases, surgery will need to be done to get rid of unhealthy tissue in the eye area.

There are eight frequent causes of an eye ulcer that you need to be aware of.

1. Wearing contact lenses is a frequent cause of an eye ulcer.

Contact lens wearers need to wash their hands every time they have to handle their contacts. Without washing their hands, bacteria can easily get into the eye. Some contact lens wearers tend to use the same contact lens for months without changing them. For instance, they have a contact lens that you can wear for a month. It is best to get the contacts that you have to change daily or weekly.

Make sure to clean out the contact lens case often and use the solution every time before placing the contacts in your eyes and the case. It is also a good idea to take your contact lens out after washing your hands and wearing glasses. That way your eyes get rest from wearing contacts for a long period of time. Glasses are safer for the eyes than contacts.

2. Rubbing your eyes is a frequent cause of eye ulcers.

When we have something in our eyes, it is normal to rub it until the foreign object is out. We will even use cloths to get objects out of our eyes. It is not a good idea to rub your eyes with a cloth because you can irritate the eyes. If you have a foreign object in the eye, just wipe gently around the outside of the eye area. It is also common for people to stick their fingers in their eyes when something is in it.

For instance, an eyelash can get stuck in the eye. We will stick our dirty fingers in our eye to try to get the eyelash out. Later on, our eye will have an infection and turn red. Before you stick your fingers in your eyes or rub it, wash your hands thoroughly with warm water.

3. Fusarium is a fungal infection that contact lens wearers who use a certain type of contact solution.

The contact solution has been taken off of the market, but when it was available it didn’t protect the contact lens wearer from getting eye infections. When selecting a contact lens solution, use the one that is recommended by your eye specialist. Only your eye specialist knows what solution will work for your eyes. Don’t try to change eye solutions just because it’s cheaper. This will allow eye ulcers to occur. Pour out old contact solutions every day and clean the case thoroughly before placing a new solution in.

When cleaning out the contact lens case, always use a clean cloth. This will keep you from getting an eye infection. You won’t be able to wear your contacts until the infection goes away. The eye specialist may suggest wearing glasses instead of contacts.

4. Acanthamoeba is a frequent cause of eye ulcers.

Acanthamoeba is a parasite that is found in swimming pools, tap water, hot tubs, and any other sources of water. The parasite is common in people who wear contacts. The parasite can cause vision loss and permanent scarring in the cornea. When swimming in pools, hot tubs, or any other water sources, it’s best to take out your contact lens.

Contact lens wearers may feel like they won’t be able to see when they wear them in the water. Unless you are completely blind, you will still be able to see. Even if you wear goggles, the eye ulcer can still occur. It is even worse at a community swimming pool because there are lots of other people who use the pool.

If they already have an eye ulcer, they could possibly pass it on to others. An eye ulcer is caused by fungi and fungi can spread from person to person.

5. Dry eyes are a frequent cause of eye ulcer.

Dry eyes occur when the eye is unable to produce its own tears. When the eyes become dry, the eyes become red. Eye drops are a temporary solution, but they shouldn’t be used for a long period of time. In fact, eye drops shouldn’t be used, unless an eye specialist requests you to use them. An eye specialist more than likely will prescribe an eye solution to help with your dry eyes. It is common to want to rub your eyes when they’re dry, but it will just cause them to become irritated.

An eye ulcer will occur because you’re more than likely going to rub them while your hands are dirty. Bacteria can easily get into the eyes. Since dry eyes can become red, it’s best to wear sunglasses if it becomes embarrassing to you. You’ll protect your eyes from the sun as well.

6. Being in the sun for long periods of time can cause an eye ulcer.

It is even worse when you’re out when the sun is shining bright, such as in the early morning and late evening. Most people when they are out in the sun for long periods of time, don’t wear sunglasses. It can be difficult for eyeglass wearers to wear sunglasses since it may cause their vision to become blurry. It may be a good idea for eyeglass and contact wearers to wear sunglasses. It protects their cornea from becoming damaged.

Eyeglasses can be tinted by an eyecare specialist so that when you’re in the sun, the glasses will tint and protect your eyes. Wearing a cap can protect your eyes from the sun as well. Make sure the hat is low enough that it protects your eyes. The bigger the hat, the better it will be for you.

""

7. Lack of Vitamin A can cause an eye ulcer.

It can cause blindness because your cornea is permanently damaged. In order to get Vitamin A, taking a multivitamin is a good idea. Always take vitamins with food and a glass of water. Before you take a multivitamin, always ask your primary care doctor, especially if you are taking other prescription medications. The medicine may not fully work because of the multivitamin.

Vitamin A is in a lot of foods, including eggs, fortified skim milk and breakfast cereals. You don’t want to eat too much Vitamin A rich foods because they can have an adverse effect on your body, such as causing a coma or death.

Just take the daily dose of Vitamin A and you will be fine. Even though you’re taking Vitamin A, you still need to protect your eyes. An eye ulcer can occur when you’re not protecting your eyes, such as wearing sunglasses and practicing good hygiene with your contacts.

""

8. Eye injury is another frequent cause of an eye ulcer.

An eye injury can occur when someone hits you in the eye, chemicals getting into the eyes, or when something scratches the eye. Some symptoms include eye redness and pain. It will also be difficult to move the eye. An eye specialist will examine the eye to see how much damage to the cornea has been done. If it’s minor, antibiotics will be given, along with an eye patch.

Most people put a cold compress on the eye when there is an injury, but it’s best to let an eye specialist examine your eyes. In order to protect your eyes in the future, wear protective eyewear when dealing with chemicals. Don’t scratch or rub your eyes. Let the eye itch. It will eventually go away on its own. As for getting punched in the eye, it’s best to try to avoid those type of situations.
