2. Skin Abnormalities
People suffering from Cushing’s diseases have increased susceptibility to skin complications. The cortisol breaks down many of the proteins available in the skin. In fact, underlying mucous membranes become so dry that the skin becomes paper-thin that it takes on a shiny appearance making it vulnerable to bruising and tearing.
Some individuals experience dark spots, particularly on the neck. Wide purple and red streaks that span along the sides of the torso, the lower abdomen, arms and in other areas of weight gain is common. In some instances, the patient may experience hemorrhaging due to the weakened state of the skin. Bruised, scratched and torn skin can be difficult to heal in such individuals.
The likelihood of contracting a skin infection is high in people with Cushing’s disease. It’s also easy for patients of all ages to develop facial and body. In some instances, fungal infections along the body may be present as well.
