Conditions that affect the way in which the essential vitamins and minerals absorb in the body can also be a potential cause for developing osteomalacia. This encompasses a huge range of different gut conditions, one of the most common ones being celiac disease, or a gluten allergy.
Very serious allergies to gluten exist, and with repeated exposure to gluten (even in minor amounts) damage is done to the gut that stops it from absorbing the nutrients that it needs from food – and this can be one of the direct causes of developing osteomalacia.
Again, if you think that this symptom might be the root cause of the condition, you should take a closer look at your diet and pay special attention to food labels where there might be gluten hidden as an ingredient – and this is true with even foods where you think you know what’s in the ingredient’s list.
