2. Compresses
Compresses can be helpful to relieve irritation in the eye. However, some may recommend hot compresses, and others may suggest using cold compresses. The kind of compress you use depends on what is causing your eye problem. Sometimes dry eyes can be the result of a malfunctioning of the Meibomian glands that can become clogged. When this happens, the glands can no longer secrete enough oil.
Warm compresses can help stimulate the Meibomian gland. Placing a warm washcloth over your eyes for a few minutes can get these glands going again. If your eyes have a burning sensation or an itch, a cold washcloth placed over the eyes can relieve the symptoms. In addition to a cold washcloth, try cool cucumbers and a refrigerated spoon over your eyes for a few minutes. If you have a combination of symptoms, try both cold and hot compresses several times a day.
